Argument: the Morel Place of Corporation

Edward Freeman and Milton Friedman both had great argument on social responsibility, Friedman argued that “There is one and only one social responsibility of business to increase its profits”. Friedman believed that taking on a social and moral issues is not necessarily effective for a company. This will place those corporations at a better competitive disadvantage if they do not focus on making their profit. Taking on social and moral responsibility is not economically feasible for the corporation. Corporations should just focus on earning a profit and leave social issues to others. It’s in the best interest of a corporation to not deal with social problems. However, if Friedman truly believed in that corporations have no social responsibility then it’s possible that corporations are encouraged to steal, defraud for their customers and shareholder.
Looking at Freeman in the other hand, he believed in moral responsibility to all stakeholders. He believed that those people that are focusing on just profits and shareholder are greedy. As modern corporation continues to grow many social problems will accrue and it’s the corporate world responsibility to address those problems. In the long run it will increase the future of the company and reduce any governmental regulation. If large corporation can spend time addressing their social issues it will benefit, there company. Looking at environmental issues as an example, some corporations have had a negative effect on the environment, wasting natural resources, contributing to global warming, use of fossil fuels. Business should be able to understand how they are effecting the natural environment and it’s their responsibilities to address the issues, however most don’t. Another social responsibility issue business should be looking at is how business market good and services globally. Some business has marketed product in

Is Genetically Modified Food Safe?

...Is Genetically Modified Food Safe? Shana Kritzer Lourdes University 23 April 2013 Is Genetically Modified Food Safe?   In the spring of 1998, a riot broke out, just outside of Norfolk, England. The cause was not labor disputes or race relations, but a crop of genetically modified food. What began as a peaceful demonstration of anti-genetic modification Greenpeace protesters evolved into a riotous crowd of about 150, who after trampling security guards, marched onto the field and began uprooting and destroying a plot of genetically modified (GM) corn. Protesters used bare hands, trimming shears, and a mowing machine to destroy over 4 acres of the 6 acre plot. Farm workers tried to drive protesters away with a mechanical digger and shovels, while the farm manager disabled the mowing machine by ramming it with his tractor, but the protesters continued to demolish the crop field. After fifteen minutes police arrived and managed to break up the riot. The protest led to 30 arrests and 26 injuries (6 police officers, 12 farm workers, 8 protesters) (“GM Protesters”). After 12 more incidents like this one, numerous raids and attacks on food stores and labs selling or producing genetically modified products, the controversy and upset in England has still not reached an end. Around the world the debate on genetically modified food continues.         Products containing genetically modified ingredients dominate the grocery shelves, with at least seventy-five percent of processed...

Mining in Chile Case Study

...Leading the Rescue of the Miners in Chile Disaster struck on August 5, 2010. Thirty-three miners, drilling 700 meters (2,300 feet) below the surface, were entombed by a massive cave-in. They had been working in a medium-sized copper and gold mine beneath the moonlike wilderness of the Atacama Desert near the city of Copiapó, Republic of Chile (Chile), some 800 kilometers (500 miles) north of the country’s capital, Santiago. Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne had arrived in Quito, Ecuador, at 9 p.m. that same day with Chilean President Sebastián Piñera on a state visit. At 11 p.m., Golborne’s smart phone came to life with a message whose brevity spoke urgency: “Mine cave-in, Copiapó; 33 victims.” Golborne informed the president the next morning and flew on commercial air flights to Lima, Peru, and then to Santiago. He then took a Chilean Air Force (FACH) flight to Copiapó, and, from there, he was driven some 45 kilometers to the mine, finally arriving at 3:30 a.m. on August 7. Piñera, a business-friendly Chilean president inaugurated on March 11, 2010, had recruited Golborne, an engineer, entrepreneur, and corporate executive, to serve as Chile’s minister of mines. Golborne had served as chief executive of Cencosud S.A., a large retail firm, and under his leadership, the company had increased annual sales ten-fold, entered the Brazilian, Colombian, and Peruvian markets, and opened two new business lines, including financial William and Jacalyn Edgar Professor of Management...

What Managers Do Let’s begin by briefly defining the terms manager and the place where managers work—the organization. Then let’s look at the manager’s job; specifically, what do managers do? Managers get things done through other people. They make decisions, allocate resources, and direct the activities of others to attain goals. Managers do their work in an organization. This is a consciously coordinated social unit, composed of two or more people, that functions on a relatively continuous basis to achieve a common goal or set of goals. Based on this definition, manufacturing and service firms are organizations and so are schools, hospitals, churches, military units, retail stores, police departments, and local, state, and...

IF TOMORROW COMES by Sidney Sheldon, ©1985 BOOK ONE Chapter 01 New Orleans THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 20--- 11:00 P.M. She undressed slowly, dreamily, and when she was naked, she selected a bright red negligee to wear so that the blood would not show. Doris Whitney looked around the bedroom for the last time to make certain that the pleasant room, grown dear over the past thirty years, was neat and tidy. She opened the drawer of the bedside table and carefully removed the gun. It was shiny black, and terrifyingly cold. She placed it next to the telephone and dialed her daughter's number in Philadelphia. She listened to the echo of the distant ringing. And then there was a soft "Hello?" "Tracy... I just felt like hearing the sound of your voice, darling." "What a nice surprise, Mother." "I hope I didn't wake you up." "No. I was reading. Just getting ready to go to sleep. Charles and I were going out for dinner, but the weather's too nasty. It's snowing hard here. What's it doing there?" Dear God, we're talking about the weather, Doris Whitney thought, when there's so much I want to tell her. And can't. "Mother? Are you there?" Doris Whitney stared out the window. "It's raining." And she thought, How melodramatically appropriate. Like an...
