Security versus Freedom
For years the controversial topic of security versus freedom has divided our nation. For centuries the United States has prided itself on being a free country where people are allowed to do things like vote, voice their opinions, peacefully protest, and much more. While freedom vs security has always been an issue, only recently has it become a such a complex and important debate. After September 11th, 2001 happened, the government made drastic security changes in hopes of making America safer for its citizens. Some of those changes had citizens wondering if they were giving up some of their rights in exchange for national security. It is also technically is not in our constitution that our right to privacy is protected online. For example, one article clarifies, “Fourth Amendment The government argues that the Fourth Amendment protects information that you keep in your desk, but not information that you keep online, like old emails or pictures” (ACLU). This means that legally citizens don’t have a right to privacy while online, however, this does not mean that the government's actions are justified. Also, there are not very many laws concerning technology yet because the government and the constitution has failed to adapt to technology thus far. Another point of view suggests that there should be nothing to hide on your screens anyways. As an illustration, one article wrote, “There is the argument of “Nothing to hide, nothing to fear”, in support of what some might consider mass surveillance” (Allison). In reality yes, most Americans don’t have anything to hide, but they still want the government to respect their privacy. Most would agree that some surveillance is ok, but at some point it does cross an unmarked
