This interview is of Sharon Beverly, Debra DeMeis, and Richard Lapchick. The interview is all about Title IX, while Sharon Beverly was a basketball player, and then a coach during the development of the law. Debra DeMeis talks a lot about how it is not solely about sports, but is also about woman being accepted in jobs, and into school inspite of their gender, as well as other instances. Richard Lapchick talks about whether these laws that are to help woman in sports are affecting men in sports. They use real life experiences, and educated opinions about this to debate on it. This is very useful for my research. This once again gives perspectives of people that were alive during this time and were effected directly due to this. This is another

...Writing to Convince Argumentative and Persuasive Essays Sometimes we write to defend an opinion, to argue against somebody’s point of view, or to convince readers why and how we think a certain problem should be settled. The argument we develop should be a logical, properly thought-out presentation of ideas that makes a claim about an issue and supports that claim with evidence. Within this general frame, our argument consists of four basic components: (1) an issue, (2) a claim, (3) support, and (4) a recognition and refutation of the opposing view. A. The Issue. An argument is concerned with an issue – a case (like war, smoking, cloning, etc.) on which people hold opposite or different opinions. To build a convincing argument about an issue, it is essential that we be aware of the audience we are addressing: • Agreeing audience: When you write to people who already agree with your claim, the focus is usually to urge them to take a specific action and build emotional ties with them. • Neutral audience: In writing to a neutral audience, try to emphasize the importance of the issue and offer explanations that clear up your readers’ questions or misunderstandings about, or lack of interest in it. • Disagreeing audience: The most challenging audience combines people whose viewpoints contrast with yours; they may be hostile to your claim and have strong feelings about the issue. In writing to a disagreeing audience, your goal is to convince readers to consider...

Argumentative Writing

...Argumentative writing Planning Stage For an argument essay to be effective, it must contain certain elements. For this reason, you must take a few minutes to plan before you jump into writing an argument essay. Find a Good Topic To find good topic for an argument essay you should consider several issues that will have two conflicting points of view or very different conclusions. As you look over a list of topics you should find one that really sparks your interest. While a strong interest in a topic is important, it's not enough. You next have to consider what position you can back up with reasoning. It's one thing to have a strong belief, but when shaping an argument you'll have to explain why your belief is reasonable and logical. As you explore the topics, make a mental list of points you could use as evidence for or against an issue. Consider Both Sides of Your Topic and Take a Position Once you have selected a topic you feel strongly about, you should make a list of points for both sides of the argument. One of your first objectives in your essay will be to present both sides of your issue with an assessment of each. Of course, you will conclude that one side (your side) is the best conclusion. In the planning stage you will need to consider strong arguments for the "other" side. Then you'll shoot them down! Gather Evidence When we think of arguments we might picture two red-faced people speaking quite loudly and making dramatic gestures. But that's because...

Feminine Beauty vs. Masculine the Other Side of Double Standards: a Normative Critique

...2014 Unit 4 Final Argumentative Essay Feminine Beauty vs. Masculine The Other Side of Double Standards: a Normative Critique It’s everywhere. It’s on television, in movies, in magazines, on billboards, in social media. Everywhere a person looks they find the objectification of women, the socially unacceptable unrealistic standards for women, and the so-called “fat-shaming” of the female gender. However, all people know the argument against such sexist conduct. People dispute the issue over Facebook, blog journals, and even scholarly articles. Dove, the huge lotion, body wash, and shampoo conglomerate has their own “Love Your Body Campaign” which features average women in their ads. Now, this is fantastic that females can battle against how they are represented in media, but most people never consider that the same exact thing happens to men. Amanda Marcotte from Slate.com shows how the double standard is prominent with an example from a response to one of her articles about a relationship. Oh, and there’s a new thought: a double standard with the males on the downside? I don’t think many people have really considered or even heard one of those before. A more known topic is the pressuring of children of both genders into traditional gender roles. Many people admonish the pressuring of girls into their roles, but pressuring boys is also a problem. Paul Theroux talks of this in his essay “Being a Man.” Media makes men out to be just as unrealistic as it does women, and this is also...

E-Portfolio

...To the reader, I bet you are wondering what this is all about, or perhaps who I even am. Let us start with a greeting, shall we? Hi, I’m Celina Gonzales, a college freshman taking up BS Legal Management. This E-portfolio encapsulates my entire writing journey of sorts in my ENGLCOM (Basic Communication and Study Skills) course throughout the second term of my first year in university. In here, you will be able to read about various ideas—from the meaning of the word “infinite” beyond the concept taught to us in our Math classes, to the causes of the Philippines’ lagged progress (no, it is not solely due to corruption), and, well, Korean Pop. With all these topics mentioned, I hope you appreciate how much I have grown in terms of flexibility, as I was never comfortable with writing beyond my interests. The entire journey was a roller coaster, thanks to the great deal of papers that came with strict deadlines, high standards, along with numerous revisions inked in either pink, green, red, or blue. However, I believe that all those days figuring out how exactly my professors want me to revise parts of my papers and whatnot are worth it—The innumerable scratch papers that I was armed with in the beginning of the term are gone. I can now write an article of great quality without having to frantically jot down my ideas on a separate sheet of paper. I believe that this growth of mine is impossible without my professors. Therefore, I would like to extend my gratitude to them: To...

...Feature Hendrix Prof. Ziegler English 1121-01 Argumentative Research Essay Sixty-six percent of people on (Debate.org) said that reality television should be ban. It brings out the bad stereotypes in people (Kenya). People’s personal life are being taped on a daily basis. It can ruin culture image or a person’s life. Young teens are out of control, and are portrayed as loudmouth who only care about themselves. different stereotypes are shown about gender. There are many stereotypes in reality television. Reality television is promoting dangerous stereotypes in our society, culture, teens, race, and male and female. Reality television have damaged my home and even my sisters are falling into the messages they are sending. Should reality television be ban like some television shows? Government officials have banned some of South Park and family Guy episodes. So why can’t they ban reality television shows or ban some of them to aired? It does not teach anything useful. People become addicted to it very often. Anything excessive is not reality. In reality, people do not slum around the pool all day getting wasted. Reality does not consist of girls having make up on every hour of the day. In reality, people go to work, and spouses don’t sit around the house all day gossiping about their friend’s life or what is happening in another city. People on reality shows need to grow up and get a job. They need to stop relying on others to support them because that is all reality producer...

...Responsibility’ (Bolle & Vogel, 2011) This is certainly true in every organization that is successful. Leaders who responsibly use their power for the greater good of the organization tend to find success easier than those who don’t. For example, the most famous leaders of today, Steve Jobs (Apple), Bill Gates (Windows) and Sir Richard Branson (Virgin) are all visionaries and managed to responsibly use their power to make their companies amongst the most successful and revolutionary in the world. This essay aims to provide a detailed understanding into the various bases of power as mentioned by French & Raven (1958): -Reward, Coercive, Legitimate (Positional Powers)-, -Informational, Referent and Expert (Personal Powers) - (Lo & Ramayah, 2011). It also aims to provide an analysis of the use of power by managers within an organizational setting. Finally, this essay will describe managers’ utilization of the various bases and use different examples. This essay will also provide recommendations and argue how managers should be acquiring more personal power characteristics to increase chances of success in the workplace. Firstly, to fully grasp the idea of what ‘Power’ is in an organization, the bases of power must be comprehensively discussed. As mentioned in the introduction, the six bases of Power are: Reward, Coercive, Legitimate,...

Male Nurses

...and finally, relatively low salaries. But these strands lead to new questions, wider causes which have nothing to do with social yarn. These new questions have to do with rhetoric and the enduring association of nursing with “women’s work” and “femininity.” Matthew has the audacity to ask how the rhetoric of femininity actually functions. How and why are we compelled to accept images and tropes as ‘normal’ or ‘natural’ when they are anything but normal and natural? Is it possible that the rhetoric of nursing is responsible for the shortage? Or perhaps it is the rhetoric of femininity and masculinity as such? But how did such a crime take place, right under our noses, when so many of us never noticed that an injustice ever took place? This essay is brilliant and provocative because it will not stop until the crime...

Invention

...invention Commercial Break!!: Creative Play With Media Influence Purpose: Works well to introduce a personal visual media paper, or other media analysis paper, because it encourages students to think critically about their childhood experiences with TV, etc in a personal, creative way. The exercise may become an early paper draft, or simply stimulate their thinking about the programs and commercials they have watched, and how these media affected them. Description: Students will write creative narratives about a childhood TV experience, then trade papers with another classmate, who will assess the program, the narrator, and then complete the narrative with a commercial break description suited to the program and audience. You may want to have your own example written up to read to them before each step, just to get them thinking about what’s possible. Suggested Time: 20 minutes to a full class period Procedure: Ask the class what their favorite shows were as kids: cartoons, sitcoms, even documentaries. You may want to bring in a few stills or uTube clips to project (in a tech class), as a memory jogger (ex. The Cosby Show, Ren & Stimpy, etc). Once you’ve discussed a nice variety of TV programs, ask the class to freewrite for 5-10 minutes (however long you wish to tell them) in first-person P.O.V. about their experience watching a show like these as a kid. They should be specific and detailed, writing whatever comes to memory about what’s going on in the program and their thoughts/reactions/and...
