In high school, my student government teacher said he saw something in me, something different from the many students he taught. During my senior year of high school, he continuously stressed the idea of happiness and purpose to me, telling me, “Do something your passionate about and be happy.” These words initially stuck with me as I pursued different passions; however, over the course of time, I forgot about these words. Immediately after high school, I went to work for my family’s construction business, not because I wanted to but because I did not know what I wanted to do with my life. Five years went by when I realized I was missing something from my own life. I was unhappy. That is when I decided to come back to school. Through my conversations with those students and others around me, I have been able to draw the conclusion that students do not see the utility or importance of their college experience because the lack of knowledge of their own self and their place in the world around them. This is what I am most interested in. I would like to focus on developing and understanding this phenomenon further using what I have already uncovered with fellow students and what my thoughts have been through the communication classes I took in my undergraduate degree. Being accepted into the MACS program at ASU West will allow me to further study what I am most interested in, but also allow me to be exposed to different classes which would teach me different ways to look at my focus. The focus I have is to help my fellow being through their journey in what they call life.
