Arlington Essay
Ms. Ward

You may think to yourself... How significant do you have to get to be buried at Arlington? What is the highest honor given at the Cemetery? These are questions we ask ourselves. If you choose me to represent our school I could do the best of my ability to get these questions answered. First, here are some facts about The Arlington National Cemetery.
The Arlington Cemetery is a 624 acre burial land on the Potomac River. The cemetery first opened in June 28, 1864. It was not yet considered an honor to be buried there when it was first built. Only those who could not afford obituaries were put to rest in peace at Arlington. No one knew it would be a luxury and an honor to be buried at Arlington today. Back then it was a dishonor basically!
Though, in the time of the revolutionary war, several soldiers were buried here. This was not an honor, yet. Although when the civil war began till today 330,000+ soldiers were buried in Arlington. It soon became a very high award on your life to be buried there.
Not everyone buried there was infamous. There were several famous people buried there. Such as: Abner Doubleday (Civil war general), Alan Eggers (Medal of Honor recipient), and Alfred Richmond (Commandant of U.S coast guard). These people have all done something significant in history to be awarded the honor of being buried at Arlington.
Who to choose should be very clear by now. Obviously I am the best candidate to be chosen to represent our school. I know a lot about Arlington and I have family members in the military which use to work very close with the up keeping of the Arlington cemetery.
My Uncle Harold, wo is very close to me, was in the military closely working in the background of Arlington. My Uncle William also was in the military and air force. He did not work at Arlington but he deserves to be buried there with my Uncle Harold (when they’re deceased) as the highest honor.
My point is that being buried at Arlington is not just an honor it’s a privilege. I hope one day I would be worthy of being buried at Arlington one day like all the other men and women. No, like all the other HEROES. Thank you.

Arlington Theater Observation Essay

...Located at the corner of Victoria and Chapala Street, next to the Arlington Theater there are six mosaic murals, picturing the Chumash Indians of Santa Barbara. The murals describe the history throughout their life and how they lived. Joseph Knowles created the art 1959; the murals were made of over 465000 square pieces and imported from Cincinnati, Ohio. At the time the work cost around 25000 dollars to make. In this essay I will describe three of these pictures and explain how I interpret each mural. On panel one, also called the Chumash you will see a Chumash man facing the spectator. He is holding an enormous fish in his left hand and in his right hand he holds a paddle. His face is painted in black and white colors and he has middle long black hair. He’s dressed in a white small kirtle. On his right side there is a woman struggling with carrying a big sack with help of her head. It seems like she is about to go back to the village. She is wearing a long white dress that goes down to hers calf, the dress also has horizontal black stripes farthest down. Both characters are standing in some sort of a harbor. In the background there is two tomols that we today call boats. The...

...- 18 000 000 $ per year until year 2035. Stadium rent - 8% of the stadium revenue Private funds - 500 000 000 $, amortization is 15 years, interest rate is 10% They also took a loan from G-3 - 150 000 000 $, amortization is 15 years, interest rate is 7%. Inflation rate is 2,5 % The tax rate is 20 % (I took it so, because there was no information about the tax rate in the case and at that time NFL was tax-exempt. However, this exempt will end in 2015, according to WSJ - http://www.wsj.com/articles/nfl-to-end-tax-exempt-status-1430241845 ) Depreciation is 15 years at 43.33 000 000 $ per year The maintenance costs will be 7 000 000 $ per year In the conclusion I would like to say, that without the help of City of Arlington, the loan form G-3, it would practically impossible for Dallas Cowboys and its owner Jerri Jones to build the stadium. Even the Texas governor passed the bill for people to vote in order to decide, whether to raise the taxes or not to pay for a stadium complex for Dallas Cowboys. Also, I would like to add, that if the city would not help the team, the was a possibility to move to another town. And that would be a great loss for Dallas, because Cowboys now rank as the 3 most valuable Sport Team in the world according to...

Organizational Analysis

...Week 4 Assignment Organizational Analysis, Part II National Cemetery Administration Student Name Professor Human Resources October 00, 2011 The National Cemetery Administration is a federal agency that has been tasked with honoring the military service of our nation’s veterans. This organization is made up of many cemeteries and main offices in the United States and Puerto Rico. Each cemetery is tasked with providing burial services to the military member and their eligible dependents. This can include a spouse or in some cases children. Each cemetery has the number of employees needed to meet its own burial volume. There are cemeteries that are full and only accept subsequent interments. They will have one to three burials a month. There are newer cemeteries that have slightly over one hundred burials in a month. Some established national cemeteries bury that many in a week. Each cemetery has different personnel and geographic needs. To determine what human resources each cemetery might need it is important to factor in the local community. Is there a military base really close? Is there a large percentage of veteran retirees in the area? There are many ways to look at how you need to determine your future burial needs. If like in Florida you have a high percentage of veteran retirees, you might need to plan for higher numbers of interments and thus more employees. In Georgia where there are many retirees you still need enough employees...

Hero of All Time

...When someone thinks of a superhero majority of the time they’ll think of the all mighty Superman or Captain America. But what really makes a hero? Is it the ability to withstand any force thrown upon them? Or is it their incredible super strength? Hero’s are not always what we expect them to be. However they are not always what cartoons tend to describe them. We sometimes think and refer to a hero as someone that will come and save us flying or doing some sort magic, but that is not what a hero is. A hero is someone with tremendous amount of courage and bravery and will be in the front line ready for any duty or obstacle comes upon them. One of the greatest 20th century hero ever lived is Audie Murphy. Born in Kingston, Hunt County, Texas on June 20, 1924, Audie Murphy was raised in a sharecropper’s dilapidated house. His father fell short on his parental responsibilities and eventually abandoned his family leaving Audie to pick up his slack and take care of his mother and younger siblings. Soon after, his mother passed away and to honor her death he enlisted in the military. Audie soon became the most decorated U.S. soldier in World War II. Though he was only 21 years old at the end of the war, he had killed more than 240 German soldiers, had been wounded three times, and had earned 33 awards and medals. One of Audie’s most courageous moments in combat started on January 26, 1945. Murphy and Company B found themselves on the outskirts of woods facing the German village...

Richard Cory

...In the poem “Richard Cory” written by Edwin Arlington Robinson, Richard Cory is portrayed as a great man, and everyone thinks he is such a well put together person who has his life together. When he walks the streets down town, we get to hear the poorer peoples’ perspective on their idea of him. They elaborate about how everything from his actions to his looks are appealing. Throughout the poem it seems like he has the perfect life because of how the lower class of people talk about him, but in the end we discover that he commits suicide by shooting himself in the head. After reading this poem, you realize that there are many themes portrayed and each consisting of significant value. For example, one of the main themes that we see is that you cannot assume certain aspects of a person just off of their looks. The less fortunate people, or as said in the poem, “people on the pavement” (Robinson, 851), only went...

The American Tragedy, the American Dream

...Primary Sources 1. Robinson, Edwin Arlington. Richard Cory. 1897. Edwin Robinson wrote a short narrative poem about a man, Richard Cory. Robinson describes Richard Cory as a man who is wealthy, admired, educated, stylish, and modest. At the end of the poem the feeling of admiration changes to shock after it was revealed that Richard Cory "went home and put a bullet through his head." Robinson taught the moral "money doesn't buy happiness" through the magic of envy. 2. Simon, Paul. Richard Cory. 1966. Literature In Paul Simon's adaptation of Richard Cory he reconceived the original poem and added a chorus that emphasized a separate truth. Simon talks about Richard Cory being Meeks 2 "born into society" and painted a picture of Cory being a wealthy playboy with tones like "the orgies on his yacht." Simon wants his readers/listeners to view Richard Cory as a type of lifestyle. Secondary Sources 3. Morse, David E. Avant-Rock in the Classroom. The English Journal, Vol. 58, No. 2 (Feb., 1969), pp. 196-200+297. Print. This article suggests that using avant-rock in the classroom the students would show more interest in literature. "The whole avant-rock movement clearly challenges the traditional notions of what is literature." Morse believes that by doing this they will bring many students who react sentimentally to ballads will undertake meaning with art of their culture. Richard

...Richard Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poem, Richard Cory, was a window into the life of a lonely man, who had everything ones heart could desire. He was good looking, wealth and well known there out the town. Even though he had all of these things he still “put a bullet through his head”. Sixty nine years later Paul Simon wrote a response to Edwin Arlington Robinson’s poem, also entitle Richard Cory. Paul Simon response came in the form of a song. The speaker in Simon’s poem is a low class working citizen, who wishes he was Richard Cory. Even though both poems are about Richard Cory and have the same title, the two are very different in many ways. They also share some similarities, which is not that many. The first contrast, I see between the poems is that Richard Cory had everything a man could want. “He had everything a man could want: power, grace, and style”. To the readers and the narrators Richard Cory appears to have everything plus more. They only see his exterior appearance, not the interior. If Richard Cory had everything, why did he take his life? The first similarity I see in the two poems is that everybody wants to be Richard Cory. Even after he committed suicide, the townspeople still wish they could be Richard Cory. Once again the townspeople and the narrator are only looking at the exterior and not the interior of Richard Cory. In Simon’s poem, the narrator repeats it over and over again in through out the poem. The second contrast that I noticed was that everyone...

Annie Proulx Essay

...Academic essay on Annie Proulx's "Job Story" Choices are something we all make. Not necessarily important choices, but there will always be a time to make them. It's not always good choices, but they have to be made. There will always be consequences, whether it's bad or good. Throughout the story, Leeland Lee has to make a lot of choices. Where to live, where to work and when to work. All the different choices he made, put him in the position he is now. Leeland Lee is an awkward-looking young boy. His face is heavily boned, which he has gotten from his mom, his neck is quite thick and he has red-gold hair. His eyes are as pouchy as a middle-aged alcoholic. His nose is broad and lays close to his face. Lori Bovee is Leeland Lee's wife. She has an undistinguished oval face, and hair of medium length. Leeland Lee is the protagonist of the story, because he is the main character. I would say Leeland is a flat and static character as he is an endless optimist. He doesn't give up when it comes to finding a new job, and despite his wife dying he still gets a job at Unique Eats. The reason he is a static character is because he doesn't change at all. After getting several different jobs he doesn't change anything, after his mom and wife dies he doesn't change one single thing except the fact he isn't listening to the radio anymore, but since that have been an important factor of the story all along, it can also show a lot about how he has changed. The story starts November...

...An essay is a piece of writing which is often written from an author's personal[->0] point of view[->1]. Essays can consist of a number of elements, including: literary criticism[->2], political manifestos[->3], learned arguments[->4], observations of daily life, recollections, and reflections of the author. The definition of an essay is vague, overlapping with those of an article[->5] and a short story[->6]. Almost all modern essays are written in prose[->7], but works in verse[->8] have been dubbed essays (e.g. Alexander Pope[->9]'s An Essay on Criticism[->10] and An Essay on Man[->11]). While brevity usually defines an essay, voluminous works like John Locke[->12]'s An Essay Concerning Human Understanding[->13] and Thomas Malthus[->14]'s An Essay on the Principle of Population[->15] are counterexamples. In some countries (e.g., the United States and Canada), essays have become a major part of formal education[->16]. Liking Is for Cowards, Go for What Hurts

...We all know love. We have all loved in some kind of way. We love our parents, significant others and even our friends. But we can also love other things like animals or material things. But what is the difference between loving and liking? And is it better not to love and feel pain or to love and be hurt in the progress? Jonathan Franzen seeks to answer these questions in his essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts”. The essay “Liking Is for Cowards. Go for What Hurts” is, as mentioned, written by Jonathan Franzen and published in The New York Times, May 28, 2011. Jonathan Franzen is born in 1959, and he is an acclaimed American novelist and essayist. The essay is based on the commencement speech he delivered at Kenyon College in Ohio, USA. “Our technology has become extremely adept in creating products that correspond to our fantasy ideal of an erotic relationship, in which the beloved object asks for nothing and gives everything, instantly. (…)” As Franzen claims in his essay, many people can feel like they love their technological object. It gives them a satisfaction, which human interaction maybe wouldn’t. Franzen however thinks, that people in general don’t love material things: they like them. There is a major difference between loving and liking – even though it might appear small. “Liking, in general, is commercial culture’s substitute for loving.” Products are made to be likeable, but if that concept in transferred to a person, you would instantly see...

Reaction - Salvation

...Reaction – “Salvation” The nonfiction short essay “Salvation” written by Langston Hughes in 1940, presents a theme on the literal and often manipulated perception of children. Hughes narrates the essay as he recounts his disappointing attempt at salvation. Hughes aunt told him that when she was saved by Jesus she saw a light, and felt something happen within herself. As children will do, Hughes took her story literally and was heartbroken as he sat in front of the church and watched other children “saved” while he was not. He believed that Jesus must not want him because he did not see or feel anything. In the end, Hughes is forced to lie about accepting Jesus and in turn rejects the Christian faith all together. I related to Hughes story on many accounts. I am a mother of three young children who perceive everything in life literally, and as a young girl I was raised in a very religious environment. I could visualize and almost feel Hughes devastation as he sat at the front of the church crushed by the thoughts of God not wanting him. “Still I kept waiting to see Jesus” (Barnet, Cain, & Burto, 2011, pp. 351). One of the churches that my family attended for a short time during my childhood practiced speaking in tongs. I specifically remember feeling just like Hughes during a service when other children were speaking in unnatural languages perceived to be sent from God himself. I could not understand why I was not chosen to talk for God and intern was hurt and...
