Michelangelo’s David and Duchamp’s Nude Descending a staircase was a shock to the general public. The statue of David is a nude man in which was acceptable at the time rather than in recent days. It didn’t meet the approval of the public. A second group of citizens objective to its nudity and before it was installed a copper skirt of leaves was prepared to spare the general public any offence. Duchamp’s painting raised shock to its public viewers because it was meant to portray as a nude woman as she ascended the staircase.
Contemporary views found Michelangelo’s David nudity to contemnor and they tried many attempts to vandalism the statue. Also, Duchamp’s painting to be deceiving and confusing because the paint did not look like the title.
Duchamp used a combination of futurism, cubism, and an influence by other artists to attempt this attempt to show the human form in many different positions and angles simultaneously. Instead of using a series of shots like the artists he gathered inspiration from, he overlapped the images. This painting was the product of that idea combined with his cubist and futurist influence.
This painting certainly does make one want to study it to find some semblance of what it infers. I admit that I looked for quite some time to try to wrap my head around its meaning and content. I have seen this painting before I knew his inspiration and did not give it much more than a second glance, considering it

...Joy Chambers 01/14/13 Art 101 Week 9 Checkpoint Art is found in every community. Whether it is a billboard someone has painted to advertise a business, or a sculpture someone has sculpted. Art is what gives the community its personality. In order for the piece of art to stay where it is it has to be supported by the agency where it is located and also by the community in which it resides. Agencies where art is found as well as the general public provide the greatest support for art in the community. I live in southern Maryland which is about 30 minutes from Washington, DC. In my community there are a lot of art museums and sculptures in various parts of DC. The art ranges from African art all the way to different types of performance art. The art in my community is very well supported by the agencies and the general public. The agencies that own the art whether it is inside the building or outside, hire people to maintain the work. This includes keeping the sculptures clean and in good condition and also cleaning of the area around where the art is kept. Each agency does fundraisers and events to show off their art. The purpose of the fundraisers is to make sure the art is kept in good condition so they can keep it available for the public to enjoy. They also do events at the museums to bring more public attention to the art they have. The citizens support the art by going to the museum and paying the entrance fees. They also advertize to their friends and coworkers...

...Understanding Iconography Sandra Michelli Art 101 Feb 17, 2013 Timothy Brown Understanding Iconography The two works of art I chose are, Rebellious Silence, by Shirin Neshat and The South Ledges, Appledore by Childe Hassam. Though these are two totally different works of art, I found them both interesting and compelling. They both showed different images and roles of women in society. When creating a piece of art, the artist has four roles to consider or fill. These roles are; the artist helps to show the world in a different way than others might see it, they create a visual record of the time period and area they are in, they make objects that have a given function and are ordinary look more appealing and lastly the artist gives meaning to ideas, thoughts or feelings that are considered immaterial. When an artist creates a piece of art with the role of showing you something you see often in a different way, they are trying to get you to think out of the box. Look at a common scene or items and see it, not for what it is, but for what it could be. While the artist who is trying to show you how to see a common thing or place in a different way, the artist who is trying to fill the role of expressing their time period or the place they are recreating are trying to help show you exactly what they are seeing and they are seeing it. They are trying to bring their visions to you just as they are. The third role of the artist, giving common objects more appeal or meaning...

Art 101 Week Checkpoint

...Art 101 Week 8 Checkpoint Comparison of Three Sculptures Art is heavily influenced by the culture in which it was produced. As the three versions of David make evident, one person or object will be represented in different ways depending on the environment of its portrayer. In examining the sculptures of David created by Donatello, Michelangelo, and Bernini I can see that art is not only influenced by an artist’s surroundings, but because of popular styles of the era. Donatello’s and Michelangelo’s David are similar in many ways. Both sculptures being from the Renaissance, they share some characteristics in form. Each artist positioned the body of David in the contrapposto position. Their bodies are curved, relaxed and shown in the nude. This reflects the popular style of sculpture of the culture and relates the ideas about the human form. Donatello’s David is different from Michelangelo’s most in the physical attributes of the body. Michelangelo’s David has more of the sculpted bodies of the Greek gods. The sculpture is muscular, mature and his physical beauty is not to be overlooked at. Donatello’s David has the body of a young man still developing into his body. Instead of appearing strong and confident, David appears to have a young boy facing a task much harder and larger than him. Bernini’s David has the shape of a human body in motion. He is strong like Michelangelo’s David and appears to be ready for...

We decided on an interactive timeline focused on one art medium. It is your responsibility to choose one art form such as a painting or sculpture for the timeline. You must also have a common theme for the artwork you select. If you were to choose sculpture, your theme might be 20th-century sculpture. Whatever your selected focus is, make sure you do not make the timeline too long. Ten works of art should suffice. After selecting the 10 works of art, write a short paragraph to accompany each one. You have approximately 9 weeks for this project before you turn over your selected artworks and content to the design team. Select one art media on which to focus. Examples include: ·         Painting ·         Architecture ·         Performance art ·         Film ·         Others Whereas these are broad areas, you must select a single medium, then make your timeline focused on that single medium. ...Greek and Roman Architecture ART/101 5/15/2013 Mary Douglass Axia College of University of Phoenix Art takes forms in many different ways and has been around from the beginning of creation. In fact creation itself can be considered as art. The Greek and Roman architecture began around in the 600 BC, during the archaic period, according to scholastic web site Greek art and architecture reached its distinctive style. Greek architecture influenced Roman architecture and there are similarities in their art, culture and styles, yet there are also many differences because both the Greeks and the Romans techniques have unique characteristics. Greek architecture is featured by three distinct architectural types, which are the Doric, Ionic and Corinthian, but they hardly use the Corinthian themselves, rather in later years it became the standard order in Roman architecture. In ancient times the heavier Doric order was considered masculine and the Ionic order graceful and feminine (Sayre 2010). Greeks effectively used these architectural styles in constructing buildings, theaters and temples. The Doric style was primarily used in mainland Greece with a further spread to the Greek settlements in Italy. The Ionic style was used in Ionia and the Aegean islands. The Doric style was more rigid and formal, whereas the Ionic was more decorative and calm and the Corinthian is more organic and still (Sayre 2010). The styles are mostly reflected in the three orders of column capitals...

...Assignment: Formal Analysis of Art Summary There are various formal qualities about the painting Las Meninas by Diego Velazquez that make it very interesting to view. For example, I have observed the above listed painting through conducting a formal analysis of it, and have concluded with the following observations and interpretations of my understandings. The artist has portrayed an image of girls in the midst as if waiting to attend the wedding. Second, the artist reflects within the painting background an image of an artist working on a painting, while a mirrored image on the very back wall depicts what appears to be the King and Queen. These formal qualities used by Diego Velazquez create many illusionistic effects, just as that of the mirror used to attract the viewer’s visibility; rather it also portrays reflections of images that reside outside the view. In addition, the artist here has used three primary focal-points including self-portrait, half-length, and reflected mirrored images. However, the dimensions and depth of the painting have been obscured this has been accomplished through the use of various layers, shapes, colors, and tones that tend to overlap for outstanding effects. The formal qualities of Nighthawks by Edward Hopper are also very interesting yet, much more simple and to the point than that of Las Menias. ...and what may have triggered them. As a civilization progresses and evolves they bring with them common characteristics from their predecessors. Some of these characteristics are government, economy, food and supplies, social equality, and religion. The Paleolithic were among the first to inhabit the regions of Western Europe stretching to Egypt. They were also the first to adapt to the land, hunt and gathered, and also experimented with art, textures, and colors. The Paleolithic didn’t have a form of government more of a tribe family which were ruled by the male and differed from city to city. They also didn’t have an economic system or a way to trade goods. However they were among the many to learn how to evolve their weapons into more effective ways to hunt. The Neolithic civilization carried these same common characteristics, but evolved it and organized it a lot better. There form of government was evolved into a chief and council system. Hunting and gathering was also in existence but were evolved to farming and creating surpluses. Art was also apparent more so in sculptures, textures, and more discovered materials. Also a barter system was established where one could trade their precious items with another. Egypt most commonly shared these characteristics with all past civilizations. However, with all civilizations they tend to adapt a specific idea and somehow able to evolve it further. For instance the barter system in Egypt was now abolished and a form of currency...

...The Last Supper and The Book Of Genesis Leonardo Da Vinci was one of the most prominent men in history and was the creator of many new ideas. He created many works of art and invented many new technologies that would be considered extreme for the time period. One of the biggest works of art he completed was “The Last Supper”. This painting, done in fresco, plays a significant role in Christianity and depicts Jesus with his disciples. Along with “The Last Supper”, The Book of Genesis was produced to influence belief on a group of individuals. These works of art are cemented in history and can be connected to each other by their significant individual affects on human existence. “The Last Supper” and the creation story in The Book of Genesis are connected to one another by theology and both share themes such as creationism and humanism. To understand how these individual pieces of work are connected to each other, one must first breakdown why these works of art were created. The Last Supper is one of the most thought-provoking and controversial works of Leonardo da Vinci. It is a mural painting, which means that it is directly painted on a wall, and is created by Leonardo in Milan from 1495 till 1498. Da Vinci painted it for his patron Duke Ludovico Sforza who decided that he wanted this religious scene painted. The Last Supper measures 15 feet × 29 feet and covers the back wall of the dining hall at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. Leonardo spent 3 years painting...

Art History 101

...After reviewing the background readings, it was very hard to choose one of the paintings or sculpture to write about. One of the paintings/sculptures that stood out to me was “Neptune Calming the Waves” sculpted by Adam Lambert-Sigisbert. Adam Lambert-Sigisbert is a French sculptor who was also known as Adam l’aine. He came from a family full of sculptors. His father was Jacob Sigisbert-Adam. He was born October 10th 1700. He spent ten years in Italy, That is where he was influenced by the art work of Bernini. In 1723, Adam Lambert-Sigisbert received the Prix de Rome for study at the French Academy in Rome. The Prix de Rome was a scholarship for art students, principally of painting, sculpture, and architecture. It was in Rome where Adam restored a disparate group of fragmentary Roman sculptures with much ability and baroque freedom of interpretation. In 1732, Adam was elected as a member of the Roman artists’ guild, the Accademia di San Luca. He was one of the sixteen sculptors and designers who submitted plans for the Trevi Fountain. His design for the fountain was unanimously accepted but repealed. Romans were against a foreigner to receive the commission. At the age of thirty-seven, Adam exhibited at the Paris Salon. The pose that Adam had Neptune positioned is very dynamic. He had him advancing forward toward the waves as his hair and beard are flowing through the wind. The way he captured the motion is impeccable. He is a flawless incarnation of the god...

Classical Argument: Earthquakes

...Adrian Howley Classical Argument Reporting earthquakes are very critical to studying the behavior of tectonic plates. The very first recorded earthquake occurred in the year 1831 B.C. and is currently known today as the 526 Antioch Earthquake. The area affected was Antioch, China (located between the Syria and Turkey regions). Not much is known about how the report was formed. However, this historic report did include information about how the aftershocks lasted for twelve months. Other details from this report indicate that the death toll is around 250,000 to 300,000 casualties. Scientists today can only prove that the earthquake occurred between May 20 and May 29 (date translated from B.C. to Calendar Year). The first instrument to measure the seismic waves of earthquakes was invented by Charles F. Richter at the California Institute of Technology. (Bellis, 2013) He introduced his new instrument called the Richter scale, to the world of science. His invention allows scientists today to study the mechanics behind earthquakes and locate the epicenter to which the natural disaster originated. The largest earthquake recorded by the Richter scale was measured on May 22, 1960 at a magnitude of 9.5. The quake resulted in 1,886 deaths, 2,000,000 homeless, and $1,175,000,000 total in damages. (“The Largest Earthquake”, [PDF file]) If we want to see these large numbers slide down to zero, the impossible will need to be challenged by science. Skyscrapers are buildings consisting...
