Art Analysis: The Agora

One hundred and six headless torsos frozenly traverse a small portion of the southwest corner of Grant Park. All made of cast-iron and standing 9 feet tall, these figures collectively make up the Agora, an installation by Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz. It took two years of molding and casting by the artist and her assistants at the Srem foundry in Poland before being transported to Chicago for its erection in October 2006 (Abakanowicz, Agora 2003-2006). The viewer is encouraged to walk amongst these creatures as both participant and outsider. There is no clear starting point so you are free to choose what direction you want to take through it. I, personally, began on the end closest to Roosevelt Avenue where most of the figures are placed closer together, facing the center and each other. This side of the installation feels more intimidating, as the close proximity of the figures leave very small spaces for you to actually be able to get through much like how you would feel as a child in a large crowd. As you progress through to the other end, the gaps start to widen as the sculptures begin “heading out” and away from the central mass. The opposite end is a reversal of its partner where instead of coming together, the structures are walking away from each other. …show more content…
That opinion somewhat changes upon closer inspection. While they still tower over most people in height, their hollow backs give a lighter appearance and their wrinkled surfaces from their individually crafted molds mirror tree bark which gives each one a sense of the organic and the individual (Abakanowicz, Magdalena Abakanowicz 2006). The metal was intentionally allowed to rust over which extends their tree-like appearance but also gives homage to the industrial roots of both its birth land and the city it now calls

...Retail trade is one of the traditional businesses of Bangladesh. Its expansion is keeping pace with population growth and changes in consumption patterns, which are consistent with the growth of the economy. This expansion has not been structurally organized, because, until recently, retailing had never been perceived as an industry, but rather as an individual or family business entity with a very limited scope of organized expansion. Little to no market information is available on the retail sector, but secondary sources indicate that the size of the food retail sector in Bangladesh could be US$12-14 billion, and the number of retail grocery shops could be around 1 million. Retail is one of the biggest sources of employment (12 percent), and it contributed 13 percent (wholesale and retail trading) to Bangladesh’s GDP. Organized retail is booming and creating huge opportunity for enterprises. Retailers though sell other companies products work out their own marketing strategies fixing their own target market towards providing customer satisfaction separately. Retail stores irrespective of product line and relative prices emerge in all shape and sizes, such as Specialty stores, Department stores, Supermarkets, Superstore, Convenience stores, Discount stores and off- price stores. Current Market Scenario of Super Market: Superstores are set to boom in the country as the current market players are planning to open several hundred more outlets in the next few years...
