Art and entertainment

The discussion what is art and what is entertainment has become quite common. Another relating topic is – do artists entertain, or do entertainers create art? The most common answer to these questions is, yes. Artists certainly create art, but art is also done for entertainment, and everything that was created by entertainers has a certain degree of artistic merit. If we go to a museum, we will see wonderful paintings and sculptures which are certainly more artistic than graffiti on the walls in the street. In a museum, we expect that we will be exposed to a certain level of art, and at the same tame, we will experience a certain level of entertainment. Whether something is artistic or not, simply depends on the opinion a person has, and this opinion is no less valuable than any other. Of course, there must be some objective attributes of art that make it art like using metaphors, symbolism, and plot devices, and similarly, entertainment has features that make it entertainment. Black Swan by Aronofsky is probably more artistic than, say, the Twilight vampire saga, but the latter one would be probably more entertaining for the common audience. Another question is, which one is better? That is again a matter of opinion. If we focus on literature, a classic novel by Hardy is generally considered more artistic than a romantic story by Danielle Steel. This comparison offers an idea that art is more superior to entertainment, but this is not true. All creations have aspects of both, although to different degrees, and comparing them would be unfair, because they serve different purposes. Many people do not want to read, watch, or listen to anything artistic, while others derive their entertainment from enjoying something artistic. Some people want to consume without thinking about it, overlooking details and values that are considered artistic. People simply enjoy things in different ways. From the first paragraph, we can conclude that everything is artistic and entertaining at some level. It was created to make us more cultural people, despite the amount of money spent or effort invested; it is whatever we find important or whatever makes us happy. It is often said that entertainment is for people who after they get home from work, lie down on the sofa and get their minds off things. Art, on the other hand, is more for someone who wants to get their mind engaged and stimulated. We cannot go to see Rambo III for art, unless we are stupid. Wanting to get a jolt of adrenaline, let’s go to watch a road movie or thriller. By contrast, good art usually demands our patience and slowing down. David Cronenberg, a contemporary famous film director, said something very truthful: “Entertainment tries to give you what you want – a movie, pop-corn, and ice-cream. Art wants to give you what you don’t know you want.” Therefore, art is for example, when you see a performance, painting, or movie you planned to see, and then you sit and think about it or discuss it, and cannot you get it from your head. Another difference is that entertainment tries to hold you by all means, whether art does not care when it loses your attention. If you are lost, or not able to follow, that is your problem. Entertainment also keeps you on your level, while art assumes you are already at a high level and wants to take you higher. Entertainment wants you to think that you are thinking, but leads you to a chosen conclusion. Art makes you think and allows you to come up with your own subjective conclusion. Good entertainment often is not artistic, but good art often is entertaining. If entertainment is boring, it is a waste of money to see it, if the art is boring, maybe you should see it again, discuss it, or read more about it. From the arguments above, we can conclude that art is superior. But what can be called art? From many definitions we can assume that art is an aesthetically pleasing and meaningful arrangement of words, sounds, colors, and shapes. It could be amended by “for those who are willing to rise to it, for all gender, races, sexes, religions, at any time, and at any place. Sometimes it does not reach an audience until decades or even centuries later. Art is about expressing one’s personal inner state or vision of the world. The thrill of art is in making new connections and discovering new corners of yourself. Art also often tends to be “less is more“. Art that tries to be art is usually bad art. Art outlives us as well as its creator. And it shall be like this because people come and go, as do trends and theories about art, but art lives forever. After dealing with art, we should now try to define entertainment. Oscar Wilde said: “Yes, the public is wonderfully tolerant. It forgives you everything except genius.” It could mean that we are not able to recognize real genius art, and also that we are able to admire absolute garbage. What is entertaining is as subjective as the previous concept of what art is. Perhaps, entertainment is something that takes us into another world, whereas art takes us deeper into ourselves. Entertainment is prevailingly about mass appeal, about some good well told stories that get our blood going fast, make us laugh, and increase our adrenaline. Evidently, our responses are mainly physical concerning our bodies and sometimes our hearts. Art does it to our minds and souls. Entertainment dazzles us and makes us feel again like children, while art usually assumes that we are mature and treats us accordingly. Asking which is better is senseless. Both require formidable skills. Entertainment dominates the world, although most attempts to make great mass appeal entertainment have failed, and making art is not easy either. For example Altman’s film Short cuts, based on Raymond Carver short stories that was meant to be as artistic as the muster, has failed, but still, it is worthwhile to see and compare with the book. In conclusion, art can be entertaining and entertainment can also be artistic. Some achievements seem not to fit comfortably into these categories, they can be both. Generally if a work of art upsets or bores you and you never want to see it again, wait a while to try it again. It may surprise you. And if a piece of entertainment has the same bad effect, it is not going to improve with age.

Art vs. Entertainment

...Art vs. Entertainment We live in a world that is permeated with different inspirations and distractions. Technology is extremely advanced and it opens many possibilities for human to communicate and be entertained. Humans naturally seek and are attracted to something inspiring, beautiful, joyful or amusing which could be translated to Art or entertainment. So what defines art and entertainment? How can we tell the difference between art and entertainment? Art is inspiring, a form of pure self-expression, unique creation but not always widely accepted and entertainment is amusing, popular, widely accepted and business related. One of the many reasons why art is so important in human life is because it is inspiring, and beautiful. It contains a message which could bring your heart to warmth. For example, I would say one of the most beautiful film I have ever watched is called “The Children of Heaven, Bacheha-Ye aseman (1997)”. This film shows that being poor does not direct you to unhappiness but give you hope to move forward. It is not extravagant like big blockbuster movies but it moves you because it is pure, showing people’s pain and worries yet sending a message of hopes and we should never give up because of our misfortune. It was memorable because I could relate it to myself. Yet entertainment is more focused on how entertaining and how amusing it is. Let’s face it – we watch TV shows or movies when we are bored because they are entertaining. They are fun to fill our free...

...Difference Between Art and Entertainment by Jeff Goins | 99 Comments Art, they say, is in the eye of the beholder. Which is a nice way of saying it’s whatever you want it to be. But I don’t believe that. Photo credit: Mark Heard (Creative Commons) Although I don’t have an objective perspective (nobody does), and mine is but one opinion, I believe there is such a thing as good and bad art. Maybe that’s asking too much, for us to label art “good” or “bad,” or maybe that feels too restrictive. That’s fine, I suppose; I don’t want to impose my artistic standards on someone else, nor would I appreciate having it the other way around. But what is not okay is calling something “art” when it’s not — when it is, in fact, something else. Art versus entertainment My friend Stephen pointed out recently, quoting Makoto Fujimura I think, that the difference between art and entertainment is subtle, but important: Entertainment gives you a predictable pleasure… Art leads to transformation. If that’s true, then we may have a problem, because what a lot of people call “art” isn’t changing us. At best, it’s entertaining us, dulling our senses and inebriating us to the realities of the world. Which is not the point. Art is supposed to transform: * It surprises. * It wounds. * It changes. Entertainment makes us feel good. It doesn’t surprise us; it meets our expectations. And that’s why we like entertainment: it coddles us. But the problem with entertainment is it leaves us...

...between Poseidon and Athena for guardianship of the city of Athens” (Lahanas). The relationship between the art and the culture of the related civilization depicts through its purpose as a temple. Some articles suggest that the temple was a place where worship occurred for both Poseidon and Athena; the structure survives and reminds of the religious history by Athenians, in Classical Greece. This genre of art influenced the culture of that civilization by providing space for religious beliefs to grow and continue; the culture influenced that genre of art through their religious practices and beliefs. Hellenistic Greece The art selectiton for the Hellenistic Greece period is “Lysippos, Apoxyomenos (The Scraper),” (Benton, DiYanni, 2008, p. 77); originally a bronze sculpture and replicated in marble reveals the competitive nature and strife to succeed with greatness. The Scraper represents the relationship between art and culture of Hellenistic Greece by capturing how the civilizations interest became more individualistic rather than basing on the successes of the whole civilization. The art would have influenced the culture of that civilization by stimulating others to focus more to make higher individual achievements. The culture influenced that genre of art by the focus they placed and capturing the portrayal of individual strengths. Etruscan civilization The art piece “Wife and Husband Sarcophagus, from Cerveteri,” (Benton, DiYanni, p. 99) is...

Hays Code

...Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc. in March 1930. Motion picture producers recognize the high trust and confidence which have been placed in them by the people of the world and which have made motion pictures a universal form of entertainment. They recognize their responsibility to the public because of this trust and because entertainment and art are important influences in the life of a nation. Hence, though regarding motion pictures primarily as entertainment without any explicit purpose of teaching or propaganda, they know that the motion picture within its own field of entertainment may be directly responsible for spiritual or moral progress, for higher types of social life, and for much correct thinking. During the rapid transition from silent to talking pictures they have realized the necessity and the opportunity of subscribing to a Code to govern the production of talking pictures and of re-acknowledging this responsibility. On their part, they ask from the public and from public leaders a sympathetic understanding of their purposes and problems and a spirit of cooperation that will allow them the freedom and opportunity necessary to bring the motion picture to a still higher level of wholesome entertainment for all the people. General Principles 1. No picture shall be produced that will lower the moral standards of those who see it. Hence the sympathy of the audience should never be thrown to the side of crime, wrongdoing, evil or sin. 2....

...Graciela Garcia 9:35 In the beginning of the course I believed that art had to do with like sculptures, paintings, or something someone is passionate about and sees what they do as art because of the love they have for what they do. I believed entertainment was something that had to do with like comedy like a show, or movie; for example Ridiculousness, the Kevin Heart shows, or Tosh.0. When I kept going to class and the lectures progressed I still viewed entertainment as something to do with comedy but also I saw it as something to do with drama. In drama where plays take place and emotions are brought out with the movement of your body language. Some people view plays as entertainment but it can also be seen as art for others. The ones who, to me, view it as both art and entertainment are the actors. They love what they do and they love to keep people entertained. I recently watched Titanic with my family and for the most part I thought that the writer of the movie wrote it more to entertain people because even though it tells the story about how the titanic sank, the writer also makes it a love story. The writer has to put some much work into what the actors say to each other so that the audience can feel what he wants us to feel. When Jack and Rose fall in love the audience knows it is something that shouldn’t happen because Rose is engaged to Cal but the audience is happy to see that because the writer of the movie makes Cal the bad guy and Jack the good guy. Art and Music History

...Art may come in the form of painting, music, theater, cinema, dance and sculpture. Art is not limited to these categories, but these are the most common. As a child, my first exposure to art was in the form of music. Growing up in Western Kentucky, bluegrass played a large part of my life. My grandfather taught me to play the banjo and guitar starting at the age of 4. I first experienced painting in elementary school beginning in the 1st grade. Cinema has always been a part of my life, but I had not considered it art until I was able to properly define it. I experienced dance in high school while taking an elective ballroom dancing course for a semester. I have experienced theater, but not enough to form an opinion about it. Lastly, sculpture had a small influence when I briefly experimented with it in high school art classes. The most valuable and influential form of art to myself is music. Music has always been a large part of my life. In total, I play 5 instruments. Guitar is the primary instrument I choose to play. My grandfather taught me as a child and I have continued to play every day for many years. I began to perform at a young age in churches and community functions. Later, in high school I started a band with a few other local musicians and we played together for about 4 years. Currently I am in a band composed of all military members; we often play in different small venues in Las Vegas, Nevada. Without music, I would not fell like a complete person. It has played...

Media Censorship

...of many that censorship has become a major battleground. Since first the shootings of April 1999 in Columbine Colorado, and most recently, the 2004 Super Bowl Halftime show in which singer Justin Timberlake exposed the breast of fellow singer Janet Jackson, the government has made it its priority to influence the entertainment industry to put into place new rules, such as the one in NASCAR, to regulate “inappropriate” material, therefore increasing censorship. On top of this, the industry itself has begun to attempt a type of self-censorship. Although censorship has been around for ages, what is it and why does it exist? Censorship in today’s era is a higher power attempting to prevent disturbing or painful sights, sounds, or any other information form from reaching the public in order to keep a feeling of well moral being. However, the main question in today’s times is whether or not censorship is necessary in today’s world, and if the government should be able to force censorship on the entertainment industry.      Though the case involving the NASCAR driver is the most recent ridiculous form of censorship, it has taken place throughout the history of entertainment itself. However, in the past ten years, after censorship laws had begun to loosen, the media and the government has once again begun to pull tighter on the censorship blindfold, covering...

The nineteenth century was a period of huge growth and change in Britain, which had a profound effect on art and design. One of the entertainment that is still popular and always evolving is the dance. “During the early part of the nineteenth century, group dances remained extremely popular,” (Miller). ...it as disrespectful, derogatory, and degrading to moral values of society. Having vulgar music perceived as unwanted is a wrongful theory. The music is supposed to serve as a career and entertainment. Making so this music will be erased will end in catastrophic results. The elimination of music will leave the consumers without entertainment, and the elimination of the music will leave the artist without a career. These two options obviously would pose a bigger problem than vulgarity. Vulgar music is not simply a reflection of an artist. Entertainment artist come from multifarious background and the music is an outlet of their feelings. The vulgar lyrics are produced from stress of their commanding job, as all careers are. The lyrics are also repressed feelings from their childhood being released, which are never memories someone appreciates. Having to remember that your father was on crack, facing ignominy of some sort, or just complete abuse would be powerful enough to drive the artist to use the point where simple words cannot express their feelings. The artist turns to a more aggressive and intense choice of words so the anger, sadness, or regret can properly be released. The artist is not only doing the expressing for themselves, but for the consumers as well. Entertainment artists know that the same obstacles they had to face still exist.
