...An Art Appreciation Trip to NGMA by Suvajit Chakraborty (11M52) 18th September 2011 was not just another Sunday. I was excited by the feeling that we were going to visit the National Gallery for Modern Art. Situated at the end of Rajpath, facing the India Gate, the building was the former residential palace of the Maharaja of Jaipur, hence known as "Jaipur House". It was designed by Sir Arthur Bloomfield, after the construction of Lutyens' Delhi, in 1936. A little bit of research threw up the following facts to me. Though the idea of the National Gallery was floated in 1949, it was formally inaugurated by Vice-president Dr S. Radhakrishnan in 1954, in the presence of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Hermann Goetz (1898–1976), a noted German art historian became its first curator and in time, it added new facilities such as Art restoration services, an Art reference Library and a Documentation Centre. Then in 2009, a new wing of the National Gallery of Modern Art was inaugurated adding almost six times the space to the existing gallery, plus it has a new auditorium, a preview theatre, conservation laboratory, library and academic section as well as a cafeteria and museum shop. The exhibition was well organized; the paintings were arranged in a meticulous order that evokes interest in each piece as you move from one painting to the other. The works of art were of an abstract nature mostly depicting the essence of microscopic life that exists in nature and what seems like the representation of the developmental stages of sprouting life form. In some of her painting you could see the obvious depiction of nature with landscapes and trees. The artist was able to capture this transformation of nature with the simple strokes of vertical lines and colored pencils on mostly plain white sheets of paper. I believe the goal of the artist was for each viewer to have a connection to the paintings ("Suzan Cofer: Draw Near," 2012). The exhibition consisted of over one hundreds pieces of work from the timeline of the dated from 1976 to present. This era was a difficult time for artists. ...Art in the colonial project Art played a significant role in the colonial project because of the nature of what was being depicted. Paintings such as the one done by Barker, show a striking image of the times and the underlying meaning being shown through the characters. Certainly it is an image that could stir strong emotion for parties of both sides of the situation. Looking at the painting done by Thomas Jones Barker it is plainly obvious in the positioning of the people where the power lied within the situation. The image shows the African chief kneeling before the queen accepting a bible. This is a very accurate depiction of the circumstances at the time. A Victorian seeing this image would easily be assured of who was in charge at the time. The suggestion would be that the British Empire were spreading their ways among those who were less, and that the opposition was obliged to accept the better British ways. I would not think it would be an easy image by any stretch of the imagination for a Victorian to imagine the positions in the painting swapped. Because the British were so founded in the idea that their ways were better, and that it was their job to educate the rest of the world on how to be as good as they were, a Victorian would have no reason to imagine such a thing. ...American Art Project Part One: Baptism of Pocahontas Artist: John Gadsby Chapman John Gadsby Chapman created a masterpiece that showed the Baptism of Pocahontas which was commissioned in 1837 and officially hung in 1840. This is a significant piece of art that gives a glimpse of what it might have looked or felt like for the American Indians at that time. American Indians entering into the Christian faith symbolizes the change that America was rapidly going through, but also the “take-over” by American Settlers. This was the period of time when American settlers and American Indians had strained relations and by this time they were being forced off of their land. I believe this was another way for the Americans to show their strong beliefs in Christianity; and furthermore strengthening their support among the Indians by using a popular Native face in the painting. I believe that a wide range of emotions were presented in this picture; from confusion, to anger, happiness, and maybe some who just felt indifferent or intrigued by it all. Gadsby also did a very good job at showing a softer side to Pocahontas and portraying her in a more feminine way, contrary to how she had been portrayed many times before as a heroic icon. ...Jessica Fisher December 6, 2014 American Art Project Part 1 Baptism of Pocahontas John Gadsby Chapman Chapman conveys sign of peace between the Indian tribes and the white colonists in this painting. Pocahontas brings peace between the two groups. The feeling that Chapman had captured were feelings were that of acceptance by the colonists because Pocahontas has become one of them by accepting their faith and practices, eventually marrying colonist John Rolfe. The Indian tribe not so much, they want to befriend the colonist just not at the cost of one of their own; not all felt that way as you can tell in the painting. Mr. Chapman received the commission in 1837, and the painting hung or “installed” in 1840. The events in this painting had occurred when America was breaking away from British rule. Then the rift between the English colonist and the Indian tribes that already inhabited the new world. The message of this painting is that no matter the differences that people face they can come together as one and live in harmony. Mr. Chapman is successful in communicating his message through the painting because it makes aware that part of history and what Pocahontas did to bring peace between the two groups.
