Though these are two totally different works of art, I found them both interesting and compelling. They both showed different images and roles of women in society. When creating a piece of art, the artist has four roles to consider or fill. These roles are; the artist helps to show the world in a different way than others might see it, they create a visual record of the time period and area they are in, they make objects that have a given function and are ordinary look more appealing and lastly the artist gives meaning to ideas, thoughts or feelings that are considered immaterial. When an artist creates a piece of art with the role of showing you something you see often in a different way, they are trying to get you to think out of the box. Look at a common scene or items and see it, not for what it is, but for what it could be. While the artist who is trying to show you how to see a common thing or place in a different way, the artist who is trying to fill the role of expressing their time period or the place they are recreating are trying to help show you exactly what they are seeing and they are seeing it. ... Museum Visit Paper Outer Coffin Of Khonsu 86.1.1 A-B During my visit to the Metropolitan Museum of art I saw many amazing pieces of amazing art. The Egyptian pieces stood out to me in particular because of my new background knowledge that I have acquired from this class. This was my first time at the museum and basically my first time seeing this type of art up close. Seeing images of the art on slides in class or in a textbook doesn’t really do the art justice or show the actual intricacy or detail of the figures. To be honest I don’t know which amazed me more, seeing the massive structures sculpted out of solid stone or the amazingly detailed figurines that were no bigger then two inches. At first I was going to choose a small figurine that was probably smaller then my finger. It amazed me just for the reason that it was so small but when I looked at it closely I was shocked with the detail. It was right there when it really hit me, how amazing these people were to be able to craft such detailed items without the tools that we have today. Everything was made by hand, yet it appeared to come straight out of a factory just by the way it looked. The mere part of the essay which focuses on art through history and perception, was of less interest to me, perhaps because it reminded me of a philosophical IB class I had of which similar aspects were analyzed, or simply because I had a hard time grasping all language in the later part of “ways of seeing”. Visual performing to me is art that is seen in paintings and materials, rather than performing arts is more of an expression artist use in their own ways through their bodies. In this weeks reading I learned different ways that art could be used. It can be used through symbols, which a perfect example would be a cross. Many people do not notice that wearing a cross as a necklace is art, and I think that is pretty neat. Also that art can give visible form to feelings, just be seeing a piece of art you can see the emotion and feeling that is in it. Art is something that has been around for so long that even in the ice age they had art that would be done in the caves by what they think was done with the ashes of the fire. He studied art at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn from 1941-1943, and also studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston from 1946-1948. Kelly travel to France in 1949 and infrequently attended classes at Ecole des beaux-arts where he was introduced to Surrealism and Neo-Plasticism that inspired many of his future art pieces (Guggenheim). Ellsworth Kelly’s “November Painting” was painted in 1950. It is an oil piece painted on wood in a white frame. The only colors that are displayed in the painting are black and white that makes the piece organized and concise, while also creating a nice contrast. The canvas itself is a slightly off-white. The off-white canvas is somewhat textured from the oil paint. Intermittently dispersed across the canvas are small, separate black and white geometric shapes, which unlike the background retain a smooth surface. The shapes are unorganized, and do not seem to be of any particular pattern. The shaped are not identical to each other, making each one unique and completely random. If the Council of Trent wanted the individual to understand the importance of the Catholic religion and become or stay involved in the faith, the images portraying Catholicism needed to change how one felt and make a lasting impression on them. Two great examples of Italian Baroque art that created such strong emotions in the eye of the beholder and was influenced by the Council of Trent were Artemisia Gentileschi’s Judith Beheading Holofernes 1619-20 oil on canvas (Fig. 2) and Giovanni Battista Gaulli’s fresco The Triumph of the Name of Jesus and Fall of the Damned 1672-1685 (Fig. 3). Judith Beheading Holofernes (Fig. 2) is emotion provoking from the first glance. Seeing a woman literally severing a man’s head off with a sword is horrific. Even though this woman is saving the people of Judah from the invader Holofernes, just seeing his death taking place in the artwork is pretty powerful. A man is dying and blood is spurting out of his body; it is very dramatic. Also in this piece, the dark hues of the background in sharp contrast with the pale hues of the bodies create a sense of light and bring the viewer’s eye to the focal point of the painting. ...Art and Society: Renaissance to Modern Art Paper Assignment I Analysis of the Museum’s Painting The museum’s painting (Attributed to Quentin Massys, Lamentation, c. 1520) depicted a scene in which several grieving people were gathered around Christ after his crucifixion. The thing that stands out about this painting is that Christ is not adorned in fine clothing, nor does he even appear divine in any way. The surrounding people do not appear to be priests or divine, but are normal, plainly garbed, people. Upon moving my attention to other areas of the painting, I noticed the detailed landscape upon which this scene was set. The museum’s painting can be recognized as a northern painting, even without prior knowledge of the artist who painted it. Two distinct features in this painting are strongly indicative of a northern painting. One of these said features is the landscape setting. Northern works of art deal strongly with naturalism. The second indication that this may be a northern painting has to do with the people gathered around Christ. It is easy to tell that these individuals are merely common folk. A southern painting would most likely feature angels or clergymen gathered around Christ, but within paintings from the north was the concept of humanism. ...Great Lakes Art Fair For the second art encounter I attended the 2014 Great Lakes Art Fair in Novi, Michigan. It was a short 1 hour drive for a great experience that I will tell my family about for weeks to come. This art fair reminds me of the Black Swamp festival that is in Bowling Green every year. There was art vendors as far as the eye could see. I enjoyed my time there looking at all different kinds of art, from the more contemporary styles, to classical works of art that looked as if they were taken from museum floors. The show consists of 200 artist displays, and includes free access to decorated gardens and a student art display as well. One of my favorite aspects of the festival was just the amount of art there was there. It was interesting seeing artists make pottery by hand, and showing off their tapestries that some of which took years to complete. It was really amazing to see these things, and to see how close and similar their techniques were, as to what we learned in class. Another thing that amazed me at the fair was the glassblowing demonstrators. Glass blowing has always been something that interests me. It was so cool seeing these people take molten globs of glass, and turning them into amazing bowls, vases and abstract works of art.
