It would therefore include most of the islands of the Lesser Antilles, Greater Antilles as well as the mainland territories in Central America (Costa Rica, Belize, Panama, Honduras) and Northern South America such as Columbia and Venezuela. The common link here is the Caribbean Sea. Geological There are deep seated structural features of Caribbean geology which also identifies commonalities. It is the area that is defined by the Caribbean Plate and which experiences similar tectonic, seismic and volcanic features and processes. Historical It describes the area that saw the impact of European colonization, slavery, indentureship and the plantation system. this refers to all the territories so that one way of defining the Caribbean is to identify those countries that experienced the rule of specific European countries. Thus the Caribbean may be defined as being broken up into the English, French, Dutch and Spanish speaking countries and territories. This chapter sets out to explore the extent to which Guyana has since broken free from the shackles of socialism as a result of various government and international institution-led initiatives, and explores the impact on Guyanese development as a result. By analysing the initial success of the IMF-World Bank backed austerity and recovery program implemented in 1988; CARICOM’s aim to break down the divide between the ‘core’ states and the Caribbean as a ‘peripheral’ region; and the effect of regular financial aid as a result of Guyana’s status as a heavily indebted poor country (HIPC), one quickly realises the apparent commitment of Guyanese governments to the cause of market liberalization and the desire to maximise the theoretical benefits. This deepened the livelihood crisis for millions of coffee farmers and rural communities. The specialty coffee industry responded by scaling up several sustainable coffee certification programs, including Fair Trade. This study uses household- and community-level research conducted in Nicaragua from 2000 to 2006 to assess the response to the post-1999 coffee crisis. A participatory action research team surveyed 177 households selling into conventional and Fair Trade markets in 2006. In an effort to dialogue with specialty coffee industry and mainstream development agencies, results are framed within the context of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.
