Assignment 1: It Project Management Assessment

...Fernald closure project 12 years early and $7.8 billion below estimates. The overwhelming success of the project earned the 2007 Project Management Institute’s (PMI) Project of the Year Award. (Project Management Institute, 2012) The objective of the project was the environmental cleanup and site closure of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fernald uranium production facility. The project was undertaken with the knowledge that government funding may not always be available, the public had a very poor perception of the project and current workers at the site would be laid off when the project was complete. One of the ethical issues that developed early came from reports in the local press about waste, fraud and abuse. The Department of Energy (DOE) had to report to the U.S. Congress to address these allegations. DOE has not exercised adequate management and oversight of the vitrification and uranyl projects or of the contractor’s safety and health activities. In addition, the contractor has not complied with some required procedures in maintaining its major performance and financial systems. As a result of these weaknesses, costs have increased, schedules have slipped, and safety and health risks exist. (United States General Accounting Office, 1997) After the report was published, DOE and Fluor changed the way they did business. The project became more successful because DOE took a less hands on role and Fluor stepped up to the challenge to make sure the project was run according...

Plan Well for starters the purpose of this risk management for DLIS (Defense Logistics Information Service) plan will be similar to the purpose of any organization would be and that would be how to better protect and secure the company’s IT environment. The importance of this is major since there is all kind of important data that is on and transmitted throughout our networks on a daily basis. DLIS we must ensure that we implement all necessary preventative security measures as well as policies and procedures. We must do this by first of all ensuring that we have really good antivirus software installed on all of our systems and ensuring that it is always up to date. The next thing is extensively configuring our firewalls making it more difficult for our networks to be hacked. Another thing is data encryption which is very vital in securing all important data for our company and clients especially when we are performing data transmission over the networks. The last thing I want to mention which will be part of policies and procedure is implementing various password and logon policies and procedures for security purposes as well. In Search of the Competent Project Manager

...search of the competent project manager Crawford, L Project Management Program, University of Technology, Sydney, PO Box 123 Broadway NSW Australia 2007 As project management matures as a profession there is increasing international interest in the concept of project management competence. Demand for added value and the impact of the information age on work practices has meant that we are constantly required to deliver more for less with increasing emphasis on the competence to deliver value. Whether we recognise it or not, in every aspect of our lives, we are increasingly delivering results through projects. This places emphasis on competence of people who manage and contribute to projects. A major international research project is enhancing understanding of the project management role and of the environments in which projects are managed. It is providing clues in the search for the competent project manager. 1. Introduction Project management is often referred to as the ‘accidental profession’ [1]. It is also a profession in formation, and much of the attention given to project management competence reflects attempts to pin down, or better understand the evolving nature of project management and the role of the project manager. Although there has been focus on the search for the competent project manager, there is growing appreciation that projects will be delivered more effectively if there is synergy between the project management competence of individuals...
