Assessment 2B: Analysis of collaborative work

The following is a review of Assessment 2A: Producing an online informational resource. I will be discussing, demonstrating and addressing the key criteria as it applies to my group’s now submitted assessment and how the factors of online collaboration affected the effective productivity of my group with reference to learning materials we have studied throughout.

The shining example that comes to my mind is the strong leadership from one of our members, Will Martin. I am unfamiliar with Will’s background but he has a firm understanding of leaderships skills and abilities. He was immediately instrumental in getting us on track for a topic and discussing strengths/ weaknesses of group members

This allowed us to form cohesive ideas without getting lost or left behind with various individual work schedules, life obligations and other non-study challenges that we all faced throughout, allowing a clear week to week goal and set of ideas and tasks, both individual and group, to be accomplished in a timely fashion, culminating in the overall achievement

From the outset, even before a topic was decided, we were discussing as a group the various roles each of us could provide to better function and contribute.

The role I was asked to fill, and gratefully accepted was that of the innovator, providing new ideas to the group for discussion materials, resources and potential ways to make the collaboration process easier.

In my role as an innovator I attempted to do away the so called ‘time lag’”issue when address online collaboration
“Communication in an online discussion forum can seem very slow. Users typically wait hours, or days, to get a response to a message they have submitted. One student described this as the ‘jet-lag effect’-when reading a message she almost felt she was in a different time zone from the person who wrote it” Donelan , Helen; Kear, Karen, Online Communication and Collaboration: aA Reader, Routledge, 2010, p.30-31

During the collaboration process I identified this as a potential problem and took steps to rectify by making time for what I called “real time” communication, where we would be on a live chat/text platform to discuss our progress.

There were two main problems I observed during the collaboration process, the above mentioned time issue and information not being conveyed clearly across all members of the team resulting in confusion and frustration.

That last table does not work for me! It makes no sense at all and while I get you may understand what those descriptors mean Will we don’t. I understand the simpler 5 sub topics and how they fit into our topic but I cannot make heads no tails of that table.
Please stop worrying about tables they don’t contribute to our final mark in anyway and Will you are creating things that are getting more and more complicated. Please can we leave this at the 5 broad sub topics; who, volunteering, war, home, here and now.”

This confusion of information caused obvious tension and took valuable time away from productive work. This was resolved by making slight group voted changes to the scope of information we would use.

The collaboration process for Assessment 2A has been enlightening and exciting. Were we to go through the process again, the strategy I would employ would be to have tasks and topics assigned, a reasonable and discussed timeline established and set time for so called “real time” discussion to not only check, but also motivate team members into making productive and responsible contributions.
