A Thank You to Liz Writing has never been one of my strong points in school or life. I knew taking English 101 was going to be a challenge, especially considering I haven’t been in school for fifteen years. Turns out, the class isn’t as bad as I thought it might be. In fact English is one of my more enjoyable subjects this semester. The primary reason for this enjoyment is because of my wife Liz. She is currently pursuing her master’s in English and has a great deal of knowledge on the subject. Liz’s help in several aspects of my writing is the reason I have done so well. Here are a few examples of this help. One of the major aspects of writing Liz has helped me with is brainstorming. She would sit down with me and read the essay topic and instructions. Then we would begin to gather a list of ideas on the topic. Next we would discuss each topic and decide whether or not to keep it. Liz is very good with giving pros and cons on why to use or not use an idea. In the end we would narrow my list down to one idea to use. This brainstorming help gave me a great start to most of my essays. Another aspect that Liz helped me with is sentence structure. I sometimes write sentences that are awkward or to “wordy” as she says. Here is an example from the rough draft of this essay:
“Now factor in that I haven’t been in school for fifteen years and you can probably see why I dreaded the idea of taking English 101.”
Now read the second sentence of the opening paragraph and you can see the changes I made with Liz’s help. The sentence is not awkward or wordy anymore. The paragraph has a good flow to it. Liz’s ability to proof read my essays and spot these types of sentences have given my essay better fluency and transition. The last and maybe most important aspect Liz has helped me with this semester is the use of MLA format. I have never had to write a paper

...Self Reflective Essay Derek Alan Barbara ENG115Self-Assessment Reflection Derek Alan Barbara For the informative essay, I chose to do a web style prewriting strategy which was mainly effective at getting my ideas out while organizing them at the same time. I learned from this strategy that I can organize and have plenty of ideas come at the same time. The Purpose of my essay was to inform the reader on how to take a shower. From the getting ready part, through the actual shower and on to the after shower activities. I looked for content and organization in the essays read in class. I learned that other authors had really interesting stands on a variety of subjects. I learned that I needed to spend more time organizing and structuring my paper towards the end. I decided to revise my essay by proofreading it myself and making corrections throughout. I took time apart from the essay in order to gather my thoughts and be able to look at it with fresh eyes. This method was especially helpful because it allowed me to organize the way I wanted and decide what should be taken out and left in. I believe the strongest part of my essay was the amount of detail I used in describing how to prepare, take and things to do after utilizing a shower. I ran into some problems with getting off topic but I tried to cope with it by reminding myself of the main point and taking small breaks in between writing. This proved to be very useful and allowed me to stay on topic and organize...

Outcomes Assessment Essay

...Final Exam: Outcomes Assessment Essay Mary Smith July 4, 2010 Dr. Marsha Riggio - Instructor Strayer University Final Exam: Outcomes Assessment Essay Quote #0 – Peter (sample for you, so delete this when done) Psychological Concepts in Quote Peter’s quote describes how his Uncle Tex reacted to learning that he had a terminal illness. This relates to the stages of dying proposed by Elizabeth Kubler-Ross. When Tex first gets the news, he refuses to acknowledge the situation, which corresponds to Kubler-Ross’s stage of “Denial”. Later, Tex becomes very difficult, lashing out at his family, which corresponds to Kubler-Ross’s stage of “Anger”. Thus, Peter’s description of Tex’s experience goes along with the first two of Kubler-Ross’s stages of dying. General Perspective of the Concept Kubler-Ross’s stages of dying theory falls under the general perspective of developmental approaches to psychology. Like several other developmental theories, it is a stage theory. Kubler-Ross proposes that there are five stages to the process of dying: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. This is a true stage theory which holds that persons go through this series of stages in this particular order. At first, the dying person tries to evade the reality of the diagnosis (denial). As the reality of the diagnosis sinks in, the dying person tends to lash out at family and caregivers (anger). Subsequently, the dying person develops the hope that death can...

Self-Assessment Essay

...Bonnie Costa Self-assessment Essay February 6, 2013 Based upon my personality profile information, my strengths are that I am an efficient multi-tasker. I have a high energy level and enjoy working with people, as opposed to handling a task on my own. I am a very social individual but am able to work individually on projects when required. I am a very considerate, caring person and will go out of my way to help co-workers, family members, and friends. My older daughter has two young sons. In between running a house, going to school, and working 30 hours a week for Verizon, I always make time to have the boys sleep over once or twice a week, and I occasionally babysit when both parents are working Also, I enjoy helping people I don't know. For example, if I see a stranger taking a photograph of his wife and/or family, I'll approach him and ask if I can take a picture on his camera of all of their family together. I have done this on scenic bridges, at the beach, and at sporting events. Being the photographer in my family, I know how happy I am to have a group shot with me in there too! People are always very happy and receptive when I offer to do this for them! I find joy in the simple pleasure of helping to make other peoples' lives just a little bit easier. Making lists and generally being organized are two of my strong points. I was an executive secretary before raising my family; that was the most enjoyable and fulfilling job in my varied career. As...

Essay Questions

...Essay Questions Kristy Bazzanella Liberty University Essay Questions Assessment is a vital component in the counseling process. Use of both informal and formal assessment methods ensure that clinicians judgments are non-biased, and when utilized correctly aide in formulating of case conceptualizations and treatment plans (Whitson, 2013). The primary purpose of assessments, for the counselor, is to obtain information to effectively counsel clients. According to Whitson (2013), once all information is gained, the counselor, can “either formally or informally, diagnose the client” (p.285). It is critical that the counselor choose assessments that are both reliable and valid. The choice of assessment type and instrument will vary depending on the presenting problem, age, and cognitive and developmental state of client. Assessments will also vary according to settings. For example, the choice of assessment instruments utilized by a school counselor will differ greatly from the assessments utilized in a drug treatment or psychiatric facility. Assessments can have either a negative or positive impact on treatment planning. Counselors who use informal assessment techniques, such as unstructured interviews may find that the information gathered is not reliable and, therefore, prone to error (Whitson, 2013, p.111). Inexperienced counselors who use unstructured interviews have been observed to focus on minor issues and have failed to collect adequate data...

Classroom assessment includes all the process involved in making decisions about students learning progress. It includes the observation of students’ written work, their answers to questions in class, and performance on teacher-made and standardized tests. According to (Koyalik, 2002 as cited in Eggen & Kauchak, 2004): i. It facilitates teachers in decision making about learning progress through systematic information gathering. Besides that, assessment also accomplishes two other important goals; increasing learning and increasing motivation. The relationship between learning and assessment is very strong. Students learn more in classes where assessment is an integral part of instruction than in those where it isn’t. Brief assessment that provides frequent feedback about learning progress is more effective than long, infrequent ones, like once-a-term tests. 255 255 CLASSROOM...
