Microeconomics Assignement 1

....Microeconomics Assignement 1 1. a. Define opportunity cost, and explain its importance in economics. (3 marks) Opportunity cost refers to what you must give up (trade off) to obtain some item. It represents the forgone opportunities. It is very important to all of us; it helps and guides our decisions in life. For every decision made, no matter the circumstances; work, school, business, life in general, we incurred a cost, the opportunity cost, what we must give up to obtain the chosen good. The opportunity cost of an item is the weight of another item from those that society have to trade off or give up in order to obtain it, that is the way that society allocates its scarce resources. ALSO, OPPORTUNITY COST IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR THE THEORY OF COMPARATIVE ADVANTAGE AND TRADE. -1 MARK. b. The province of British Columbia hosted the 2010 Olympic Games and invested millions of dollars in improvements to facilities for these events. How would one determine the opportunity cost of the 2010 Olympic Games? (4 marks) The opportunity cost for BC to host the games could be determine by evaluating and comparing what the province could do with the funds (tax payers money) and time that it will invest in the games against, the benefits that could bring to the to the province if BC against the benefits that that money and time will create if invested differently. In one hand the province could add all the benefits that the games will bring to the province; benefits such as increase...

...No matter how efficient you are at managing your firm’s IT needs, the people you work with will always have some kind of issue that they will need your help with. Whether their browser isn’t fast enough, their storage space isn’t large enough, or their monitor isn’t bright enough, they will always have something they think needs to be fixed right now. With that in mind it’s also important for you to recognize that while an individual complaint may seem innocuous, anything has the capacity to cause serious issues if overlooked long enough. For example, if an employee is experiencing a slow web browser they may only be losing about 3 seconds of work each day, which doesn’t seem much of an issue, but if every employee were experiencing the same slowdown, and over the course of a year or more, the work lost in that time can be staggering. For this reason, ensuring that you are properly set up to use DNS, and knowing when is the right time to use DHCP is important. It’s easier for most humans to remember words and phrases than strings of IP addresses and for that reason DNS should be used anytime you expect anyone on your network to be connecting to internal or external websites. DHCP on the other hand requires a more nuanced approach. It is ill advised to apply the same strategy to all networked devices. Some equipment may require DHCP, and others may function better without it. Servers, switches, and routers will likely function better with a static address, while hosts may be served...

Assignement 1 Consensual Relationships

...Why Consensual Relationship Agreements (CRA’s) should be used in an organization: Consensual Relationship Agreements or CRA’s are used in organizations to establish boundaries for employees that are engaged in a personal relationship. As a legal contract they set forth a guide for professional conduct that protects both the employer and its employees from the possibility of a hostile work environment. A CRA usually includes statements regarding such things as the nature of the relationship that it is consensual and voluntary, that the employees will follow anti discrimination, anti harassment, and code of conduct (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011). This protects employees from harassment or discrimination during and in the aftermath should the relationship end. It also outlines behavior to avoid favoritism which is especially important if the relationship is between individuals who are of different power status within the organization with the authority to effect rewards, salaries, or influence any decision that could be deemed in favor of or reverse favor of the other individual in the relationship. Many companies that do not have policies regarding interoffice romances do have policies in regards to relationships between subordinates and management. I believe this is one of the advantages that a CRA has for the employees involved since it protects an employee from bias or conflict. Many of the remaining protections are for the protection of the organization in the result of a harassment...

...Curbing Bike Theft in Eugene Bike theft is an important issue in Eugene, especially for college students on and around campus. I recommend taking multiple steps to offer education on how to correctly use bike locks as well as enforce and increase the penalties for thieves. I’ve outlined how to educate students on theft prevention, how to register bikes, and how increased penalties will help reduce crime below. Education on Bike Locks Many bikes that are stolen are not properly locked up. The University should provide education on which locks to use and how to properly use them. With less bike theft due to prevention tactics, fewer bikes reported stolen might be offered more time and energy to locate by local police. Bikes left overnight or in dark, secluded places are more subject to theft. Educating students on the ways theft occurs prevents easy theft, which could turn off a large number people from stealing bikes. Information that is useful to students: * Use a metal “U” shaped lock * Verify that the “U” lock is properly inserted through the frame and tire * Put bikes in safe places at night * Register all bikes Having a representative on University campus to explain how important bike lock safety is can significantly decrease theft. Registration Bicycle registration is a viable way to prove ownership of a bike. Making registration for bicycles easier and more convenient creates situations where it is more difficult to resell a stolen bike...
