The Waterboy
For my project, I decided to go to check out a French cuisine restaurant in Sacramento. Looking up on Yelp for a 4 stars restaurant, I found a cozy one in Midtown named The Waterboy.
Located in the corner of 12th Street and Capitol, The Waterboy is a mixture of French and Italian cuisine. The name didn't sound too French to me at first. But why not give it a try! This might be a perfect place for a date night with a lover. I finally checked it out last weekend. I went for a nice dinner with my boyfriend at this place. He used to learn French in high school, so he also wanted to try this place out too. It was the first time for both of us.
This place is very cool. The clear glasses make me feel like eating in a patio dining than indoor dining. They actually have the real patio outside; but the time I came was 8 p.m, so no one sat outside. It is very different with what I learned from the book that by law, all French restaurants have to display their menu outside. I guess this one is more Americanized. The menu is displayed neatly in a hard cover. They even have a beverage menu separately. This is a small restaurant with a capacity about 60 persons. I didn’t feel very convenience at first because the tables are arranged a little close to each other. However, the waiter was very nice. As soon as we were seated, he offered us a nice glass of ice water. We told him that it was our first time here. So he nicely explained to us most of everything in the menu and gave us some very helpful recommendations on the food that we should order. I didn’t feel like he was pushy us at all. He took his time to help us know well the menu and then left us some time to make decisions. The menu is so different than what I’ve seen before. It is divided into 3 main sections and 1 side. The first section is appetizers, the second one is first course, and the third one is main course. The one left is sides. Looking at the menu for couple minutes, I finally ordered Deviled Egg Crostini with Dungeness Crabs & Avocado for appetizers (because I ate a little before going there). And my boyfriend ordered Braised Lamb Shoulder with Spices, Prunes & Almonds. We were offered to try free bread and butter while we were waiting for our food. They were so delicious when the bread was still warm. My dish has 4 pieces. Each piece has a crostini under, deviled egg on top, some crab meats and pepper on top of avocado. The taste is really different. The food is seasoned perfectly. While eating, I asked my boyfriend about his dish. He said it was really good. The lamb was dedicated soft, tender and melted in his mouth. After the main dishes, we were offered to have some desserts. According to the waiter, ice cream here is home made. I ordered Affogato, espresso over homemade vanilla ice cream. It’s really different! I love it. My boyfriend enjoyed his Lemon Roullade with Candied Citrus & Lemon Sauce in it.
The decor is simple with lots of wines on the rack against the wall. One thing I noticed was that people dressed very formal and classy coming here. I think wines are very popular at this restaurant. People drank wines while eating too. The waiters were very clever to keep filling up customers’ wines every time they saw it almost empty.
Overall, for my first Waterboy experience, I am very glad that I had a chance to come here. The staff is really nice and helpful. The view is very lovely. I can look out onto street from any windows. Even though I didn’t try much food here, it has Bouillabaisse, a Provence dish, for people who are in love with the Provence region. This is the number one French cuisine I recommend you guys to come try out. Overall, fantastic food and wonderful service. Love it! We’ll definitely be back next time.
