Discuss how the employee selection methods at Outback Steakhouse help the organization achieve a competitive advantage. It is Outback’s belief that employee’s is what gives the company a competitive advantage and that employees are the primary reasons a company is successful. Therefore, since the competitive advantage to an organization’s success is its choice in the individuals they hire there has to be an effective hiring process in place to weed out those individuals that do not fit into the culture they’ve established. Their intention is to provide a positive employee experience to prevent a high turnover rate. They have created a selection process for hourly and management workers that will help hire and retain people to successfully run their organization. Their selection process helps the organization achieve a competitive advantage because it allows Outback to recruit the applicant, assess their qualifications, then select the most qualified individual by selecting candidates who are motivated and their willingness to adapt to the culture, vision, values and beliefs of Outback Steakhouse. Discuss the importance of fit to Outback Steakhouse. As stated earlier it is Outback’s belief that they need to hire employees that can adapt to their culture, vision, values and beliefs. It’s also, important to Outback that the individuals they hire are a fit because this will minimize the turnover rate. To ensure they hire the right individuals they’ve incorporated into their hiring process an assessment that evaluates the candidate’s cognitive ability, personality and judgment. They’re hopeful that at some point during the rigorous hiring process those applicants that feel they cannot adapt to the Outback culture will withdraw from the process and as result their left with the most qualified candidates. It’s important that an employee’s fits into the culture of an organization because it reduces the possibility of conflict with other employees. Evaluate Outback’s selection process including the order of selection methods such that applicants first complete an application, then complete tests, and then participate in interviews. Outback first begins there hiring process by giving the applicant an overview of what the job lintels, company benefits and their expectations of their employees. Once the candidate has had opportunity to digest this information they’re ask if they would like to move forward with the process. Secondly, their given an application to complete. The information provided on this application is used by Outback to determine if the candidate is qualified to perform the job, will fit into the culture and will stay with the company. The successful candidates are assessed for their cognitive ability, personality, and judgment through a series of test. Outback’s selection process has assisted them with identifying the candidate best suited for their vacancy. The selection process ensures the hire the best candidate for the job and an employee that is likely to stay with the company. This process also, assists with maintaining a high quality staff and helps with keeping the turnover rate to a minimum. A rewarding aspect of this process is that the company saves money because they not constantly hiring and training new employees. The selection process is also valuable to the candidate. It ensures that the candidate understands the responsibilities of the job and helps them with determining if they have the skills needed to do the job. It also assists them with making a decision on whether not they can adapt to the culture of Outback. Evaluate whether or not those selection methods are valid. Applicants that are successfully selected are assessed on their cognitive ability, personality, and judgment through a series of test that have been validated using statistical data of existing employees that have been successful in the company. It is not illegal not to hire candidates that are not qualified. Employers, however, may be expected to show that the selection process is job related and beneficial. These methods are valid so long as they have not been discriminated on the basis of protected characteristics such as age, sex, race and color, national origin, disability, or religion.
