1. In what ways was the "New Generation" of American leaders in the 1820s and 30s different from the previous generation? (online reading)
 During the New Generation, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two of our Founding Fathers, died within hours of each other. Regardless of these challenges, the country thrived as new political parties were established. In the election of 1824, each of the four presidential candidates, who claimed to be Democratic-Republican Party members, competed against each other. John Quincy Adams held strong relations which connected him to the commercial interests of the Northeast. Many of his important decisions represented the meaning of the Constitution. In one of his most famous cases, Marbury v. Madison (1803), he established the right of the Supreme Court to decide on the constitutionality of any law. In 1819, he decided on the McCulloch v. Maryland case, which confirms implications that the Constitution allows the government powers beyond those expressed in words.
3. What developments led to the unexpected growth of slavery after 1790?
 A rise of the great cotton industry stimulated the necessity of slavery in the South. Eli Whitney’s great invention of the cotton gin in 1793 also added to this extension. At the same time, textile manufacturing became a large-scale operation, also known as the Industrial Revolution. Sugar cane as well as many other extensive-labor crops contributed to the growth of slavery.
4. Describe the provisions of the Missouri Compromise. Who proposed it?
 Missouri, in 1819, applied to enter the Union, holding approximately 10,000 slaves. Because of the Northern rallies opposed to Missouri’s entry, Congress was at a standstill on this decision. Because of the ingenious statesmen Henry Clay and Daniel Webster, the party had a solid membership. Finally, by the election of 1840, the Whigs were unified enough to have a single representative for president, William Henry Harrison. He was a symbol of the Democratic West and won by a sweeping majority. Shortly after his inauguration, Harrison died, and Tyler, who had sharp differences from Clay and Webster, became president.
10. Explain some of the social reforms that emerged between 1830 and 1860. (text).
 A new concept of education requiring a tutored literate electorate. Citizens demanded free, tax-supported schools open to ALL children. In addition to this social reform was the sale and use of alcohol, also known as the temperance movement. The American Temperance Union pressed for prohibition of all alcoholic beverages and banning their production. Other reforms were brought up during that era, such as problems of prisons and aid to the insane.
11. How did Andrew Jackson and the Congresses of the 1830s deal with Native Americans?
