Appendix 1

Students make an application for a course by filling in an application form. This application form is obtained by either ringing or writing to admissions. When the completed application form is sent to admissions it is placed in the in-tray of the admissions officer dealing with applications for that particular course. The admissions officer checks the form. If there is no signature on the form or if there is no appropriate reference/referee details then the form is sent back to the applicant to be completed properly. The admissions officer also checks that the applicant is suitable for the course against a list of criteria. If the applicant is not suitable for the course a letter is written to the applicant listing alternative courses for which the applicant may be more suitable. If the form has been filled in properly and the applicant is suitable for the course the form is then sent to the appropriate course tutor.

The course tutor checks the form again to ascertain the suitability of the candidate and checks the reference for the candidate. The tutor decides whether to offer a place to the applicant just on the strength of the application or to invite the student for an interview. The decision is sent back to the admissions department who write an appropriate letter to the applicant. The applicant attends an interview when required and a rejection or acceptance decision is sent by the tutor to the admissions department who write an appropriate letter to the applicant. Applicants applying for HE courses apply via UCAS who send the application to the college on behalf of the student.

All applicants who have been offered a place must enrol on the course before they are accepted as students in the college. Applicants turning up for enrolment have to fill in an enrolment form which must be signed by the course tutor. The enrolment form is then taken to registry who process the student. The applicant’s details are entered onto the registry system. The student must provide some proof of how payment is to be made for the course. Registry can take a deposit for applicants paying privately. Once the applicants financial situation is ascertained a photograph of the applicant is taken and a college ID card is issued. Students details are also sent to the library to synchronise the library database so student can start borrowing books. Student information is also sent to the finance department who collect monies from either the local council or the students. Once students are enrolled at the college they are sent a letter to inform them when their induction will take place. They are also sent a timetable.

Week 1 Problems and Exercises

...It’s important to use systems analysis and design methodologies because many software projects have a 20% success rate. In order to reduce risk a structure should be applied to account for all of the company’s needs and concerns with a project. By using an engineering approach, you’re using proven methodologies which can be applied for future projects and each time your strategy can be tweaked and improved to perfection. Prototyping is part of the feasibility analysis phase of SDLC. A simulated prototype of the target system is created which provides a glimpse of what the main system would be like. In addition, this helps in pre-analyzing the behavior of the target system, known as a POC (Proof of Concept). In the section on choosing off-the-shelf software, eight criteria are proposed for evaluating alternative packages. Suppose the choice is between alternative custom software developers rather than prewritten packages. What criteria would be appropriate to select and compare among competing bidders for custom development of an application? Define each of these criteria. The criteria for off-the-shelf software is Cost, Functionality, Vendor Support, Viability of Vendor, Flexibility, Documentation, Response Time and Ease of Installation. In terms of Custom software developers you want to make sure that the flexibility and support can be achieved if you should decide to cut ties with the developer. Another words, you would want an open API so another developer can support...

8 Proofreading Ttechniques

...8 Proofreading Techniques I searched the internet and found several techniques for proofreading your own writing. I have listed and identified eight techniques and mentioned a few here that have helped me in the past. One technique is looking for one type of problem at one given time. Read through your document, focusing on the first sentence for punctuation, then spelling, then word choice, and finally the sentence structuring until the full document is proofread with this technique. The second technique maybe is to recheck for proper names, facts, figures with correct spelling and information is up to date with accuracy. Thirdly, by reading your document out-loud, may bring to show a faulty verb ending of a missing word or addition of word to emphasize a meaning. This fourth technique mentioned would be the most used and best suggested proofreading technique in my repertoire of writing skills. Set aside your work for a few hours (or days) after you’ve finished compiling your document, then come back to it later with fresher eyes and reread the whole document over again. You may decide to tweak a few words or sentences to give the final work an awe effect for your audience, the experience factor. Sometimes, I prefer to print out a hard copy and review the document, this fifth proofreading technique may show some inconsistencies by looking it over line by line. This sixth technique mentioned may demonstrate that the writer can reformat their work and by rereading the document...

Ornstein's Summarsion

...Hi Doreen, I'm sorry I missed your call! I just got your message and will call you tomorrow to touch base and follow up. In short, the amendment I sent yesterday supersedes both the First Amendment, which you said you had, as well as a second modification via a proxy vote to remove Alec Ornstein from the Amended Operating Agreement, which is attached. The trio of managing members (Kenny Reisman, Joan Ornstein via Steve Ornstein's assignment, and Pamela Ornstein) is an imperfect solution to the question of succession that was drafted 10 years ago when there was not a clearer path. I'm obviously biased here, but a three-person, decentralized managing committee without a clear decision-making hierarchy, in which there's a lack of familiarity...

A True Fake: a Look Into Holden's Contradictions

...The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger is told in first person by the main character and narrator Holden Caulfield. Holden directly launches into his contradictory nature even on the first page. This does not stop throughout the whole of the book. Holden begins to contradict himself every time he has opinion of something that involves himself and another person. There are many accounts of this because contradicting himself seems to be a habit to Holden. These repeated accounts of Holden's contradiction kick off where he says "I'm not going to tell you my whole goddam autobiography or anything" (Salinger 1) and yet for the duration of the next few pages he continues to explain plenty of information about himself. Though it is slight, it still shows that Holden's contradictions are a major part of who he is. Another instance of this is when Holden makes a statement saying "I'm the most terrific liar you ever saw. It's awful" (16). This in and of itself is a contradiction, one moment he calls himself a terrific liar and yet he calls it awful. This example leads to the fact that Holden is quite partial to the word "phony," where he calls people out on not being true to who they are, however he lies and pretends to be something different constantly. Closely following is a more mild example where Holden states"I'm quite illiterate, but I read a lot." (18) literally saying that he is unable to read but does so anyway. Soon after that he describes himself as someone who is immature...

Academic Writing

...Mathematical Writing by Donald E. Knuth, Tracy Larrabee, and Paul M. Roberts This report is based on a course of the same name given at Stanford University during autumn quarter, 1987. Here’s the catalog description: CS 209. Mathematical Writing—Issues of technical writing and the effective presentation of mathematics and computer science. Preparation of theses, papers, books, and “literate” computer programs. A term paper on a topic of your choice; this paper may be used for credit in another course. The first three lectures were a “minicourse” that summarized the basics. About two hundred people attended those three sessions, which were devoted primarily to a discussion of the points in §1 of this report. An exercise (§2) and a suggested solution (§3) were also part of the minicourse. The remaining 28 lectures covered these and other issues in depth. We saw many examples of “before” and “after” from manuscripts in progress. We learned how to avoid excessive subscripts and superscripts. We discussed the documentation of algorithms, computer programs, and user manuals. We considered the process of refereeing and editing. We studied how to make effective diagrams and tables, and how to find appropriate quotations to spice up a text. Some of the material duplicated some of what would be discussed in writing classes offered by the English department, but the vast majority of the lectures were devoted to issues that are specific to mathematics and/or computer science. Guest lectures by...

Catcher in the Rye Closed Analysis 183-186

...Catcher in the Rye – closed analysis With close reference to pages 183-186 analyse Salinger’s use of language and structure, exploring Holden’s contradictory view of the word Holden is an adolescent struggling against the unfair, sometimes cruel nature of the adult world and sees the hypocrisy and attempts to flee it. Salinger uses Holden’s character to express his views on the 1950’s America and gives us as readers an insight through the first person narrative to the average American boy’s life. Throughout the novel we are able to identify that Holden holds many critical views on the society around him which results in his inability to connect to it. He expresses this insecurity by criticising the flaws that he finds, for example, the unfair class system. At the beginning of the extract when Holden is talking to the two children, he tells them “you should” learn about how Egyptians bury the dead, yet this is a clear contradiction to what Holden himself is like as he doesn’t care about his own education, yet is advising others. Here I believe that Holden is being what he calls ‘phony’ and in this circumstance phony refers to the false pretences and the way he acts like someone he isn’t. However, though Holden uses the word ‘phony’ repeatedly throughout the novel, it doesn’t always mean the same thing. It’s what he uses for describing the superficiality, hypocrisy, pretension, and shallowness that he encounters in the world around him and it stands as an emblem of everything...

Let’s go back to my room and study some non-Euclidean geometry. Why don’t you be the numerator and I be the denominator and both of us reduce to simplest form? I don’t care what Godel’s Incompleteness Theorem says, because I know that you complete me. There are many proofs of my theorem, but you are far and away the most elegant. Let me show you that the function of my love for you is one to one and on to. I have a solution to Fermat’s Theorem written on the inside of my pants. Want a hot Euler body massage? Shall I iterate using Newton’s method to find your 0? In game theory I study situations in which both players can win. You want to be a part of one? You have one compact set. You give me a positive derivative (Also: my vector field has a positive divergence when I am around you). Ever wonder what L’Hopital’s rule has to say about limits in the form of me over you? If you don’t want to go all the way, you can still partially derive me. My vector has a large magnitude, care to normalize it? I see that you have two nice maxima, mind if I solve for the minimum? You are one well-defined function. I like the area bounded by your two curves. Can I plug my solution into your equation? Let my ability to perform ε-δ proofs of a...

The Main Purpose of Prototyping

...Answers: A. The main purpose of prototyping is to give the users a non-abstract system design that they can evaluate early in the process to avoid costly redesigns later. B. If a prototype is developed using system prototyping, the prototype is a model of the entire system and, if it meets user requirements, can be fleshed out into a full information system. Rapid Application Development (RAD) uses iterative system prototyping to create the final application. A prototype designed using design, or throwaway, prototyping is meant to be discarded after user review, whether or not its design details will be incorporated into the final version. This is frequently used to do mock-ups of user input screens, for example, before the back-end code is developed. C. CASE tools speed development by automatically creating diagrams and sometimes even code from analyst input. Combining CASE tools with 4GLs and application, report, and screen generators gives systems analysts the ability to create information systems quickly and accurately with effective documentation. D. Advantages: • Users get to see, and possibly interact with, a system rather than imagining what it will be like. • Design problems are identified and corrected earlier in the process. • TCO can be lowered by early design refinements, or even scrapping a project when it becomes apparent that it won’t succeed. Disadvantages: • The prototype is not a fully-functioning system, so there may be key details that are not...

Jamestown: a Comparison of Events

...Jamestown, a Comparison of Accounts As I compare the account of the settling of Jamestown as written in Chapter three of the textbook to Jeffery L. Sheler’s account in the Smithsonian Magazine, I will show how they are alike and how they differ. Both are in agreement that the settlers suffered from diseases, drought, and starvation, as well as attacks from the Native Americans. When the settlers first landed, they were in awe of the garden paradise, the fresh streams, and the stately trees. However, soon, they were involved in their first Indian skirmish. This resulted in their going back to their ships and traveling down the James River to secure a safe sight. They landed on a marshy peninsula which they thought would give them protection from further Indian attacks and also serve as a good place to watch for enemy ships. Also, it states in both of the article and the chapter that they worked at building a fortress and were eager to extract gold, timber, and other commodities for the Virginia Company. As a result of their unwise choice for the location of the first English settlement, and due to the tremendous heat and insect infestation, 46 of the colonist died. Other deaths were to follow from Indian attacks and disease. Chapter 3 portrays the settlers as high bred gentlemen who wanted to be leaders and not laborers. Many of the others were craftsmen and men who had always worked as gentlemen's servants. It also states that the settlers resorted to bullying...
