“Automat” was painted by Edward Hopper in 1927. The painting was displayed for the first time on valentines day, and was sold for $1200.
The picture depicts a young woman sitting alone in some kind of cafeteria. She is drinking a cup of coffee, while she’s staring at her hot drink. She is dressed in a long warm winter coat, and a hat pulled down on her head. On her left hand she is wearing a glove, while holding the coffee cup in the right.
The painting method is oil on canvas. The colours in the painting are both dark and light, which makes the painting very cold. The background of the painting is the outside of the automat (a café with mechanical service) and is all black, and you can’t see what there is behind the large windows. In the windows you can only see the bright reflects of the lamps in the ceiling of the automat, which seems to be never ending the night. The inside of the cafeteria is being lightened by the bright lamps, which is the only light source in the painting. The light of the lamps is very harsh and bright and not cozy at all, which is typically for the type of lamps in automats. Because of Edwards colour choosing and the fact that the woman is hiding in a large green coat, indicates that the temperature inside the automat is low.

The woman’s facial expression makes her look sad, because of her tightened mouth and her eyes staring down at the table. As she sits without companionship she looks a bit afraid, which might be the reason she is seated at the table nearest the door, so she quickly can escape the cynical automat.
The black window behind the woman tells that she has dark past with terrible experiences and maybe some secrets she is hiding for her surroundings. This is supported by her loneliness in the painting; she is away from everyone else in the picture, though we might not if there is anybody else in the automat.
The perspective in the picture is very normal. When you look at the painting you almost feel that you’re a person standing in the automat, looking at the woman. She sits there all by herself and you start feeling empathy for her. Also the fact that the picture came out on Valentine’s Day makes you think about the strange woman’s night. Maybe she is sad because of a failed date or she just simply didn’t have any date this special day.
My poem:

While I’m sitting here wondering about everything feeling nothing, a huge emptiness inside me eating my feelings like a terrible monster the stranger in the corner are looking.
I can feel his eyes burning my skin reading my mind as it was an open book
I’m asking myself; is this a dream?
His my mind are answering me
“yes but no, this is an illusion of the reality”
“so yes but no”
“yes”

Realism Art

...Romantic movement. Truth and accuracy became the goals of many Realists. Many paintings depicted people at work, underscoring the changes wrought by the Industrial and Commercial Revolutions. The popularity of such 'realistic' works grew with the introduction of photography, a new visual source that created a desire for people to produce representations which look “objectively real.” Thereafter this new approach to representing the figure grew and new forms such as American realism and social realism where introduced to the art world. Therefore in view of this i will be looking at the American realist Edward Hopper and the realist painter Lucian Freud. Both these artists where at the forefront of modern art and both took different approaches to representing the figure even though both are classed under the same title of realists. Edward Hopper was an American realist, who sought to portray American urban and rural life during a period of hard times. Although he has been given the title of a realist his artistic style does not completely comply with his soft approach and simplified details, thus he is depicting what is...

These formal qualities used by Diego Velazquez create many illusionistic effects, just as that of the mirror used to attract the viewer’s visibility; rather it also portrays reflections of images that reside outside the view. In addition, the artist here has used three primary focal-points including self-portrait, half-length, and reflected mirrored images. However, the dimensions and depth of the painting have been obscured this has been accomplished through the use of various layers, shapes, colors, and tones that tend to overlap for outstanding effects. The formal qualities of Nighthawks by Edward Hopper are also very interesting yet, much more simple and to the point than that of Las Menias. For example, after observing through formal analysis I have concluded with the following observations of my understandings. In this particular painting the artist has portrayed a café full of people, while within the background stand buildings. The artist has accomplished many effects through the use of vibrant and rich colors, which in addition attract the viewer’s attention toward the people. The use of this vibrant color as well as the combined apparent depth the artist has accomplished a clean yet, very well structured and organized...

Hitchcock and Hopper

...Alfred Hitchcock is an amazing filmmaker who finds great inspiration in an amazing artist, Edward Hopper. Hitchcock imitates Hopper’s work in many of his films. In the movie Rear Window, Hitchcock uses some of Hopper’s paintings that give off an unsettling feeling. In the movie Vertigo, Hitchcock creates feelings of isolation and imitates the scenery in Hoppers paintings. Both films contain moods, sceneries, and visual imagery that are similar to some of Edward Hopper’s best works of art. Compare scenes from the film Vertigo and Hopper’s paintings. Not only does the film portray sexual obsession, it also conveys isolation and anxiety. The realm Hopper evokes, a distinctly personal vision with the impact of intense colors and figures that are established strongly, is offset by the introspective melancholy that is so profoundly characterised by the individuals in his paintings. The strong lines emphasize the impression of alienation. This is immediately clear while looking at Hopper’s painting “Nighthawks” and or “Automat”. Both paintings are similar in mood and theme. Hitchcock imitates these paintings when Jimmy Stewart follows Kim Novak around to analyse her odd behavior and activities. Also, Hitchcock imitates the aggressive color palette and atmosphere of “Western Motel” and “The City”. These paintings are shown at any outdoor or bright sunlight scene in the film. Edward Hopper has long been called a voyeuristic painter who stands outside, looking in at his subjects...
