...Name: QIJIA CAO Class: ESL 103 Demeaning Love Show Hurts “The Bachelor: Silly, Sexist, and, to Many, Irresistible” by Mimi Avins, displays the factors in the reality show that make people deeply fascinated by and crazy about it. According to Avins, first of all, she remarks everyone is voyeuristic, which means that people want to know something mysterious or private to satisfy their own curiosity and watch tragedies such as a beautiful woman being rejected, which makes them feel good. Secondly, shallowness is another factor that attracts the audience’s attention. The elaborate editing enables people only to see the amusing parts of the characters, so the audience can guess the rest of those people’s personalities and get involved in the show. Next, as the author mentions, the humor of the project makes people have fun and get some interesting topics to chat about at parties. Also, she writes that the romantic, gorgeous settings in the show tempt us so well since everyone loves fairy tales and beautiful dreams. Moreover, Avin also mentions that people think they can learn some tactics about how to be alluring, find a lover, date and get engaged. Ultimately, the article ends in complaints about the program. In her words, the show is demeaning and disrespectful to women to some extents. In addition, some participants are not seriously looking for love; they just want to show off and be on TV. Avin’s complaint that The Bachelor is demeaning to woman is indeed correct...

She also begins to talk about the pros and cons of marriage. Also, by giving data “As late as the 1960’s, two-thirds of college women in the United States said they would marry a man they didn’t fall in live if he met all their other, often economic, criteria” (Avins 172). In most cases being married is a personal goal, but it can also affect families. Americans have their own opinions about marriage. It all comes down to the individual and how they look at the aspect of marriage. Some people like idea of being single and live their life by the way they think life should be lived. Then there is the other idea of the traditional marriage, which is being married to a partner that you would want to live the rest of your life with. There are pros and cons for each way and how they affect society. Living the single life has its ups and downs. Men and women tend to fine on their own and are able to find a stable job. Single women tend to marry a man they do not love even though they fit into their criteria economically. Men are also the same way and feel obligated to marry if the woman fits his criteria just because. Single mothers have played...

Ethics of Actuaries

...Executive Summary This report provides an analysis on how ethical conflicts arise in the actuarial profession. Through extensive research we uncover many conflicts of interest and ethical dilemmas that actuaries can face during their everyday work and careers. In particular we look at how genetic factors and rating criterion create conflict. We look at ethical conflict with respect to testimony, pension and reserve actuaries, and also how external watchdogs play a role in auditing actuaries’ decisions. We found that actuaries must always be alert and prepared to deal with these ethical conflicts. They must be aware that their actions can have an impact on the financial future of a company, the insurance rates of an individual, or otherwise could result in a problem for themselves. They must also be aware that there are external watchdogs in place to make sure they are not forging numbers but are instead making informed and accurate decisions. We recommend that students who intend to pursue actuarial studies take a course called Introduction to Actuarial Practice (MTHEL 131). We also recommend that the faculty should modify this course to put more weight on professionalism and ethics to emphasise the importance of the subject. This will educate students so they can make informed and ethically sound decisions in their future careers. Cakes and Ale

...I I HAVE noticed that when someone asks for you on the telephone and, finding you out, leaves a message begging you to call him up the moment you come in, and it’s important, the matter is more often important to him than to you. When it comes to making you a present or doing you a favour most people are able to hold their impatience within reasonable bounds. So when I got back to my lodgings with just enough time to have a drink, a cigarette, and to read my paper before dressing for dinner, and was told by Miss Fellows, my landlady, that Mr. Alroy Kear wished me to ring him up at once, I felt that I could safely ignore his request. “Is that the writer?” she asked me. “It is.” She gave the telephone a friendly glance. “Shall I get him?” “No, thank you.” “What shall I say if he rings again?” “Ask him to leave a message.” “Very good, sir.” She pursed her lips. She took the empty siphon, swept the room with a look to see that it was tidy, and went out. Miss Fellows was a great novel reader. I was sure that she had read all Roy’s books. Her disapproval of my casualness suggested that she had read them with admiration. When I got home again, I found a note in her bold, legible writing on the sideboard. Mr. Kear rang up twice. Can you lunch with him to-morrow? If not what day will suit you? I raised my eyebrows. I had not seen Roy for three months and then only for a few minutes at a party; he had been very friendly, he always was, and when we separated he had expressed...
