Ballet Philippines Case Study

I. Executive Summary of the Case

II. Background of the Case

Ballet Philippines, based at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, founded by Alice Reyes and began as the Alice Reyes Dance Company in 1969 with the support of Eddie Elejar and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Alice Reyes, had her intensive training in dance in the United States under various scholarships. As a scholar of the Music Promotions Foundation of the Philippines, she decided that she wanted to share her knowledge and thus, she proposed to put up a dance concert.

III. Statement of the Problem

What is their primary reason in putting up the Ballet Philippines?

How does Ballet Philippines contribute to the Philippine arts industry?

Why do we need to patronize ballet performances?

IV. Statement of the Objective

The officers of the CCP, Jaime Zobel, president, and Lucresia Kasilag, artistic director accepted Alice’s Reyes proposal. Consequently, the Alice Reyes Modern Dance Concert was held in February 1970. This promising led Alice to organize the CCP Summer Dance Workshop in a vacant at the CCP basement, culminating the 1st Summer Dance and Music Workshop Concert that was held in June 1970, with 30 participants. Soon this pioneers were doing a season of three concerts, which eventually led them to decide to put up their own dance company.

V. Scope and Limitation of the Problem

The Alice Reyes Dance Company was organized along with the CCP Summer Dance Workshop and the CCP Dance School. In 1974, the CCP Dance Foundation was organized to provide financial and organizational assistance for the company, the name of which was changed to the CCP Dance Company. By 1977, the foundation was incorporated and eventually became the Ballet Philippines Foundation, Inc. It is common knowledge that one has to come from wealthy family in order to take up ballet. This is because it is a discipline of “labor of love” for the art in fact the, the expenses involved in being a performer can be quite expensive, because of this, number of fund-raising activities have been developed, with this hope of subsidizing some of the expenses incurred by the performers as well as promising future performers. Some of the fund-raising activities are the following, first, is the SOS fund driver (save our scholars) ballet Philippines established this fund to support the regular training of 25 scholars. Another one, is the toe shoe fund, the shoes that are used by ballerina’s are expensive. These shoes are specially constructed satin slippers with a “box” around the toe era to allow the dancer to stand on his or her toes. During its 32nd season in 2002, ballet Philippines came up with the novel idea of soliciting support specifically for the purchase of toe shoes for its performers. Sponsors can donate php2,500 (for a pair of shoes) , or even just donate for “one foot” for php1,250. Ballet as we all know is the highest form of dance and annual seasons for Ballet Philippines runs from August to March and are presented at the Main Theater of CCP. Seasons have been presented consistently and without fail. The company performs in outreach programs, which may be performed local and international venues. Programs are varied and include classics such as Swan Lake, Gisselle and the Sleeping Beauty, as well as Filipino works such as Ang Sultan, and Encantada. Contemporary pieces and Filipino dance musicals are also featured.

VI. Alternative Course of Action

As the Philippine’s premier dance company, now in its 44th season, Ballet Philippines continues nurturing the best Filipino dance artists, in a year long program of professional and development dance. The company’s achievements, coupled with the generous and prestigious support of numerous local and national funding sources, have dramatically strengthened ballet Philippines position as a world class ballet company within the local, national, and international arts communities. The company went on its first international tour in 1972, performing to rave reviews in England and in Spain.

VII. Recommendation

It was held as “an unusual and stimulating combination of modern dance and ancient Philippine traditions”. Other positive reviews kept coming and the exotic, unusually temperamental character of Philippine ballet was a great success with the audience. Dancers are professional, choreography are consistently superb, the lighting effects a treat, and the costumes are out of this world. “Anyone who likes to watch good dancing should make sure not to miss it”
