...FEES AND CHARGES FOR 2011 Web Page www.ru.ac.za/fees (1) GENERAL INFORMATION Liability for fees Liability for all fees begins as soon as completed application forms are submitted to the University and the student is accepted. The signing of the application form establishes the legal liability of the student and his/her other funder for the payment of all fees as determined by the Council. This can vary according to the student's circumstances. These fees are published in the annual Rhodes University Calendar, and are available on the WEB. In any discussions or negotiations about fees, it will be assumed that a student and his/her other funder have made themselves aware of the provisions of this section and of the equivalent fees schedule. While the University attempts to keep fees as low as possible, student fees usually increase annually by approximately 10% per annum. Ignorance of the fees payable does not provide grounds for avoiding liability for any fees due and payable. Alteration of fees The University Council reserves the right to alter all fees payable to the University, or to impose a fees surcharge if circumstances require it. In the case of an alteration of fees...

The 2010 Uk Soft Drinks Report

...soft drinks producers are regularly contacted. This includes larger branded operators, retailer own label specialists, contract packers and a significant number of smaller independent companies. Based on individual producer volumes for the year, market, sector and segment totals are calculated from the ‘bottom up’. At a sector and segment level, adjustments are then made for any double counting of contract and licensed bottling. Estimates for unauthorised soft drink imports sold through the ‘grey market’ are also included. This is more pronounced in categories such as energy drinks rather than dilute to taste drinks, for example. A complete picture of the UK soft drinks market across all sales channels is produced, through Zenith’s extensive study of the largest soft drinks companies, alongside small to medium sized operators and own label specialists. The market figures presented therefore encompass all aspects of the market including: take home, impulse and on premise; water cooler volumes for the office; home dispense carbonated soft drinks; and pump dispense carbonates in the licensed trade. To this end, a considerable amount of time and effort is spent contacting industry players and striving to analyse the complexities of the UK soft drinks arena. Zenith would like to express its...

BMW, the German carmaker, opened its factory in the southern state of Santa Catarina to begin producing its Series 3 sedan in an investment that is projected to cost R$600m ($240m) and generate 1,300 jobs. “Whether or not to export will depend on the economy and the speed with which we manage to nationalise production of our cars,” Arturo Piñeiro, president of the carmaker in Brazil, said at the opening ceremony. BMW is not the only company investing in an economy that is undergoing a deep shift in trade flows with the end of the commodity supercycle and the slowdown in China. In the 10 months to the end of October, Brazil attracted $52bn of foreign direct investment inflows, putting it on track to reach about $60bn by the end of 2014, roughly in line with previous years. “This will be another positive year,” says Alexandre Petry, executive manager of investments at Apex-Brasil, the export promotion agency of Brazil. “The principal driver for investors is our market: 200m people with a lower...

Adapting to Drought in the Sahel: Lessons for Climate Change

...Adapting to drought in the Sahel: lessons for climate change Michael Mortimore∗ The Sahel’s experience of adapting to changes in rainfall on a scale at least comparable to that of climate change scenarios, between the 1960s and the 1990s, suggests that lessons can be learnt that may have a wider utility for policy in the future. The Sahel is a major global agroecological region and its success in adaptation will influence the achievement of the global Millennium Development Goals. From simple typologies of adaptation strategies, our understanding of adaptive capacity has evolved over time (with accumulating observations) into a contextual model which places drought management at the center of a development process. Climate change impacts in future are very uncertain. Policies and interventions should therefore aim to build on the platform of past achievements and existing local knowledge to enable flexibility and diversity and the protection of assets of small-scale farmers and herders .  2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. WIREs Clim Change 2010 1 134–143 ‘Africa is the most vulnerable region to climate change, due to the extreme poverty of many Africans, frequent natural disasters such as droughts and floods, and agricultural systems heavily dependent on rainfall’.1 ‘the continent’s low adaptive capacity serves as a major constraint to her ability to adapt’ (Ref 2. p. 6). ‘It is uncertain how rainfall in the Sahel, the Guinean coast and the southern Sahara will evolve in this century’...
