Family Dynamics at Birth

...mother, father, siblings, and extended family of the new parents. Although a newborn baby is a bundle of joy, some adjustments should be done to welcome the new member of the family. With a new addition to the family all members should expect and be prepared for tremendous changes. These changes directly affect the mother, father, siblings and extended family of the new parents. First, we can start with the changes in the newborn’s life. With the delivery the baby undergoes a huge stress. Until the delivery the newborn is safe and sound in her mother’s uterus. She received nourishment from her mom, she heard her heartbeat and it was nice and warm in there. As soon as she leaves the uterus there are so many changes that she has to go through. Learning to breathe independently, adjusting to different temperatures and the very difficult feeding process makes her little body exhausted. It’s important that the parents provide the baby with the best medical care so the baby can grow to be a healthy child. In addition, the baby needs a positive family interaction to make the adjustment easier. Secondly, we can examine the mother, the most important figure in the baby’s early stages. We can easily say that the mother’s adjustment to her new life is the most difficult one. Mothers go through drastic hormonal changes during their pregnancies. After the labor and the delivery the body tries to go back to its state before the pregnancy. This causes the hormone levels to fluctuate, which...

Sids

...Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is defined as “an unspecified medical entity: the sudden and unexpected death of a reasonably healthy child, whose passing away remains uncertain following the performance of an adequate assessment of medical history, autopsy, and death scene examination”(Valdes-Dapena,1979). SIDS is one of the predominately-unsolved problems of infancy. The number of infants who die each year of SIDS is greater than the number of children who die of pneumonia, child abuse, AIDS, cancer, heart disease, cystic fibrosis, and muscular dystrophy combined (Mayo Foundation for Medical Education and Research, 2007). Even though SIDS is not predictable or 100% preventable, there are prevention tips, guidance, and support for those that have been affected by this tragedy. The tragic loss of a child to SIDS weighs heavily on the minds of all parents. One thought that offers a little comfort to parents who have suffered such a loss is that there appears to be no suffering. In most SIDS cases, death occurs rapidly and during sleep. According to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), “SIDS is the prevalent cause of death during the first year of life with a rate of roughly two per every thousand births.” SIDS could possibly have more than one cause, though the final process appears to be associated in the majority of cases. Though it is unknown what causes SIDS, it is known...

...could utilise my strengths. Inspired by the composition of a dish from La Chapelle, London I began with my entree and developed a concept using the lighter of the two proteins the John Dory and Scampi. To create my main dish, I explored the best cooking method suited for the cut of meat available, the beef cheeks. I then made the decision that beef cheeks are best braised as this enhances the flavour of the meat and ensures it is tender. With my cooking technique selected I then utilised the list of ingredients available to build and create flavours that would compliment this. This report will set out to provide further insight into the composition of each of these dishes from this point. Furthermore it will provide an analysis of the ingredients used in relation to the mentioned elements of texture, colour, taste, balance, nutrition and presentation. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Research Paper

...Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is when an infant dies unexpectedly and without any known cause. This syndrome is the number 1 leading cause of death in infants. It is estimated that about 4,500 infants between 2 to 4 months die in the United States due to SIDS (Burke). The cause of death is still unknown, however, it is speculated that the reason the babies die of SIDS is because of their body’s lack of regulation such as controlling blood pressure, and regulating breathing and/or temperature (Burke). The time of death usually occurs when the baby is asleep. It is said that the baby’s sleeping positions are a possible risk factor for SIDS, such as stomach sleeping or co-sleeping with a parent. Other possible risks for SIDS are exposing...

Generational Purchase Patterns

...Generational Buying Behaviors How Baby Boomers and Millennials Differ in Making a Purchase MKTG 310-50 February 16, 2015 Introduction In the marketing world, finding groups or segments of consumers that have strong similarities are almost rare to find. When such similarities exist, marketers can offer related product, service, distribution, and communications to a very large number of potential or existing customers that will respond in a consistent way. This is the ideal way to approach a situation but it doesn’t always work so smoothly. Ever since the 1950s, marketers have pursued certain markets that are internally consistent on some common ground, but externally different from other market segments. Marketers have been effective and efficient through the act of segmentation. Baby Boomers (born 1946-1964) have been the most powerful generation historically. These Baby Boomers are known to be optimistic, team oriented, and often strive for personal gratification. Millennials (born 1981-2000) are a very close second in the generational race to be the most influential generation in history. Millennials are also quite optimistic about the future. They possess a lot of confidence and are very careful about their status level. Even though these two generations have similar traits, they are very different at the same time. Baby Boomers and Millennials will be examined on how and why they make a purchase in the market. Generation...

Why Abortion Laws Should Be Changed for Teens

...Teens and the outcome based on the laws on minors and abortion If you had a teenage daughter, how would you feel if she came home and said she was pregnant? Many teens fear to bring home a bad report card, getting in trouble at school, or even bringing home the boyfriend. Although, these are reasonable fears, the fear of telling your parents you’re pregnant at 13 is greater. Often the answer to teenage pregnancy is abortion, or illegal abortion. In many states, abortion is difficult to receive without parental consent. The laws that state this make it harder on the pregnant teen and unborn baby. If teen abortion was allowed without parental consent, there would be a lower mortality rate of teen moms and babies. Sadly, the age of sexually active teens lowers each year. When there is an unplanned pregnancy, teens are scared, and unsure as what to do. When abortion is considered it is a choice normally influenced by where she lives, beliefs, friends, fear of telling parents, abuse, if there are any places for teens to go for pregnancy, and even situations involving the pregnancy. Abortion is a tough subject for many. I myself do not believe in having an abortion, but that does not mean I’m against others in having the choice. There are places teens can go to get help in whatever they decide to do. Planned Parenthood Federation of America is one place that teens can go to and get the advice and help with whatever choice they may make. This is their statement on abortion,...

Maternity Leave: What Are the Benefits, and How Should Employers Decide the Regulations?

...Introduction A rapidly increasing population in the United States is nothing new. There is nothing special about how often people are getting married and starting families. However, what is gaining popularity is how these families are able to care for one another. More often in today’s society, mothers, and sometimes fathers, are given greater opportunities to care for the newest editions of their families. Companies in the past 34 years have been required to grant new mothers time off, under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act, to recover from the stressful time of being pregnant, going through the process of giving birth, and of course, to take care of their newborn baby. Also, the Family Medical Leave Act of 1993 touches base on the fact that pregnant women are to be given time off – 12 weeks at least – of unpaid leave. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act of 1978, gives pregnant women the same rights as others with "medical conditions". This law applies to companies employing 15 or more people. It says: • Your employer cannot fire you because you are pregnant. • Your employer cannot force you to take mandatory maternity leave. • You must be granted the same health, disability, and sickness-leave benefits as any other employee who has a medical condition. • You must be given modified tasks; alternate assignments, disability leave, or leave without pay (depending on company policy). • You are allowed to work as long as you can perform your job. • You are guaranteed job security...
