Bacillus anthracis is a gram-positive rod bacterium that forms short chains with spores in the center of them. Bacillus anthracis causes a disease called anthrax, which is found naturally in soil and wild animals. Humans can bet infected with anthrax when they come in contact with an infected animal. Anthrax can cause severe illness but can be treated with antibiotics like penicillin, doxycycline, and ciprofloxacin. Clostridium botulinum is a gram-positive rod bacterium that forms spores and produces neurotoxin botulinum. Clostridium botulinum is a food borne illness that grows bacteria on food, which is toxic and when ingested causes paralysis. Antitoxins can treat botulinum by blocking the toxin from circulating in the blood. Clostridium …show more content…
Neisseria gonorrhea is a gram-negative diplococci bacteria that causes a sexually transmitted disease called gonorrhea. Gonorrhea can be treated with antibiotics like quinolones, penicillin, tetracycline and sulfa drugs. Salmonella typhi is a gram-negative rod shaped, aerobic bacteria that is a food born pathogen. Typhoid fever is caused when a human eats food or drinks beverages that have been in contact with salmonella and after infected with salmonella it spreads through blood stream. Salmonella can be treated with antibiotics like fluoroquinolones or cephalosporins. Shigella dysenteriae is a gram negative rod-shaped bacteria, which forms no spores and is facultative anaerobic. Shigella dysenteriae is spread through food and water that have been contaminated by humans who have not washed their hand and are preparing food. Shigella dysenteriae causes diarrhea but can be treated with antibiotics like ampicillin, and amoxiciliin. Staphylococcus aureus is a gram-positive coccal bacteria that causes skin infections like pimples and boils. Staphylococcus aureus can be treated with penicillin. I. Abstract In a laboratory setting, it often becomes necessary to identify an unknown organism. In this experiment, researchers classified some unidentified bacteria based on their physical structure, colony morphology, optimal conditions and metabolic properties. A Gram stain using crystal violet, iodine, and safranin and a simple stain using methylene blue characterized the organism’s cell walls. Cultural behaviors were classified by inoculating the organisms onto nutrient agar and incubating them at 30° and 37° C for 48 hours, and observing their behaviors, as well as using Mannitol and phenol red media for fermentation and acid production. Optimal growth temperatures were determined by incubating nutrient agar plates of the organisms at 30° C and 37° C. The metabolic profile was created by inoculating the bacterium into broths containing lactose, mannitol, and citrate and incubating the tubes at 30° and 37° C for 48 hours, then observing them for color change.
