...Steven Michael: BADM 367 Back Bay Simulation The Back Bay Simulation taught me how to strategize in a managerial position. I was faced with tough investing decisions and what is known as the innovator’s dilemma. Deciding where to invest, either in Research and Development on existing technologies or in new technology, was the basis of the dilemma. When I first started the simulation I didn’t exactly have a strategy, but I did not just invest blindly. I looked at the information provided; consumer desires, revenue, etc. News articles would pop up simultaneously, and I used those to decide when and what to invest in. For example, if one said that customers wanted batteries that last longer, I would invest in the battery life for that specific battery. The old battery was a lot more successful and desired in the beginning, so I tried to invest mostly in that battery because it seemed to be making the most revenue. I always tried to price above cost for both technologies as to not lose money on my products. The simulation then illustrated that the market price for the old technology would drop, therefore the sales would decrease forcing me to drop the price to keep up with the market. In the end, I didn’t have a very high net profit, but it was a profit none the less. I did not do so well because I didn’t support the growth of the new battery. The challenge I felt the most was forecasting of sales numbers. Although I should have realized early on, price reductions actually influenced the model. When dealing with disruption, you just do not have the forecasting models that can predict proper price points. 2. The themes in the story are that older are more patient than younger, a person can be attracted by another without showing it, and you must follow the time otherwise it can become ugly. These ideas have mainly been displayed through the character development of several characters, dialogue, symbolism, lighting and camera techniques. One of the strongest themes that is portrayed in the film is oppression or discrimination towards the clones. Another important theme was the self -sacrifice of mainly Lincoln Six Echo and Jordan Two Delta, along with other several characters. Lastly, love and romance was another key theme that was explored throughout The Island and this is mostly seen again between the two main characters Six Echo and Two Delta. This successful fiction film uses different techniques to express all of these central themes. According to national bestselling author Shelly Thacker’s “10 Tips for a Top-Notch Novel,” a great novel starts with a surprising hook, doesn’t overload the beginning with background, characters possess strong goals, weaknesses and flaws, a powerful conflict with emotional impact occurs, it contains more dialogue than narrative maintaining a controlled point of view, is sure to eliminate clichés and finally uses polished writing skills. Havana Bay exceeds the reader’s expectations in all of these criteria confirming that it is a great novel. Does the novel have a surprising hook? Shelly Thacker defines a surprising hook as the “first five pages…hook the reader with an opening line that surprises, intrigues, startles and makes (the Reader) want to know more.” In Havana Bay, the first five pages represent an extremely graphic and suspenseful hook. The novel begins by introducing us to five characters Arkady, Rufo, Captain Arcos, Sergeant Luna and Osorio leaving the reader curious as to what their role will be in the story. The description of a dead body being recovered out of the water will startle the reader with vivid lines such as “grabbed onto first the inner tube and then a foot hanging from it.
