Good music to me lies within the lyrics that tells the story and the rhythm set the mood. A song’s lyrics should be powerful and have an attitude that coincides with the flow of the rhythm. Lyrics need to mean something convey the message that the singer feels whether its joy, sadness or pain. But; no matter how moving or intricate lyrics are, they do not carry weight without the proper beat and rhythm to follow them. A song missing just one of these could make a great song easily be considered awful. For example, in rap, there is a rhythm called the “Knock on Wood, Freestyle” made by self-proclaimed genius Kanye West. This is because neither compliments the other, whether it is the words or maybe the rhythm. This gives people the idea that, If I keep listening to it I’ll just feel silly and then later I may hate myself because the song keeps echoing in my head. This awful song will now be the first thing I hear in the morning for the whole week. From my own experience, I labeled these songs the Mike Jones collection, Songs that will haunt me and leave me on guard forever. Music, awful music can be a bad experience on that very level. The first bad song I ever sat through, I was egged on by my brother who thought it was great. But on first impression I didn’t think so, however, I stayed to listen in hopes that it become as depicted. That didn’t happen, the bulk of the song has him saying his name “Mike Joonesssss!” and “Back then they didn’t want me, now I’m hot and they're all on me” in that order repeatedly for five minutes. It could be portrayed as passive, knotty, plunging, romantic, or dejected illusion, but that’s not drive that pulls me towards a song. The drive stems from my own capacity to play that role, which means the words can’t be wasted there meant as guides on an adventure while the rhythm dresses the landscape. Like in my dreams, a good song could put in the shoes of a soldier on a battlefield fighting against hopeless odds, only to find out that fate was predetermined. Especially for me, a song I consider great is named “The Man on The Moon Anthem” by Kid Cudi. For me, this song depicts a specific time in my life where I was transitioning from elementary school to middle school. My confidence at its lowest, when trying to understand lady’s alluded me. Old friends were becoming distant while new friends took their place. The rhythm set the mood of feeling distant, it seemed like He felt the same way I did, then he used the lyrics to talk me through the fog I was in. To me an artist could tell a story well; however, the song may not hit as profoundly, because it may not share a similar reality with the listener.
