Balance Between Innocence And Evil In Bram Stoker's Dracula

Dracula is a book where the focus is on balance. The balance between innocence and evil; religion and science; knowledge and being oblivious, and logical and emotional balance. Many of the characters within Dracula portray the necessity to have this balance. Van Helsing represented the balance between religion and science and how together the ability to perceive situations is broader. In the same scene, once seeing vampire Lucy, Seward was able to look past his love for Lucy and understand what was actually happening. The many themes are represented by the characters themselves. A very subtle but important statement was made about the impact of evil on women. To portray this minor theme Stoker utilized Lucy. The graveyard scene summarizes Lucy’s …show more content…
This scene also defines characteristics within Seward when seeing vampire Lucy. Stoker contrasts the old Lucy with the new Lucy in the graveyard scene to portray her progression to a temptress to demonstrate the role of women. Stoker creates a contrast between a light and dark tone to portray Lucy’s change from innocence to evil. Her innocence stained her nature and stained her religiously. A very subtle but powerful description included the “dim white figure”(233). One can figure out that this figure is Lucy. Although white is a symbol of innocence and purity by adding the word “dim” it implies that it is dull or stained. When Seward and the men see Lucy’s and the “Stained the purity of her lawn death-robe”(234), one can tell that she is physically stained. Stoker implies that not only is she physically stained but spiritually stained as well. Now that she is impure it affects her afterlife: She is Hellbound as a vampire. Lucy’s “purity”(233) was transformed to “unholy light”(234). This is the religiously stained aspect Stoker is continuing with. Now that Lucy has lost her purity she has lost the religious light within her. Her religious spirit is now not worshiping God but Satan. Her eyes reflected
