A New Summer Capital

...A New Summer Capital During summer, my family has a chance to have a break from our work and studies. We travel to a place to relax our mind and body. We go for outings like swimming and visiting beautiful places. With these in mind, We proceed to Lucban, Quezon, my mother’s hometown, where we find comfort, refreshment and enjoyments to spend here our summer. Yearly, every summer, I’ve got to taste delightful moments just there in my New Summer Capital, Lucban. Arriving to the town proper, Lucban never failed to fascinate us. From the scenery that welcomes us to its food that awaits, I can always say that packing for this trip and the three-hour drive is very worth it. First of all, Lucban is known for its heritage houses. It seems that time itself turns backward. It gives us the glimpse of the past. With this, I feel joyous that Philippines can preserve some of our ancestors’ inheritance. Second, we make sure to visit the famous Kamay ni Hesus Shrine, a religious place noted for its stations of the cross on a hill climbing 300 steps. After struggling to reach the top, the overlooking view of the town relieves my exhaustion. Being so close to the sky is just a superb feeling. Third is their delicious specialties we never skip to eat. Their very own longganisa fits my taste. It is less sweet and have a garlicly taste. Their Pancit Habhab is also included in the list. It’s taste is lasting to my mouth. Without the spoon nor the fork, we eat it by “habhab”. Lifting the banana...

Dreading the Unfamiliar

...Sometimes it takes a second glance to fully see the significance of a place that may seem irrelevant at first. There is a place that holds this type of importance for me, though it took another visit for me to fully understand it. There aren’t many places I have traveled to in my life. But there has been one place I’ve been to twice. I was born in Bangladesh and moved to New York when I was three years old. The first time my family went back to visit our home country was in the summer of 2004, when I was nine years old. The second time, and most recent, was this past summer. My two trips were extremely different and if I hadn't gone again last summer, my opinion of the place would be completely different right now. The summer of 2013 was an uncertain and awkward stage in my life. I had just graduated high school and was about to head off to college. Right in the middle of all this confusion, my parents decided it would be the perfect time to visit Bangladesh as a family. I, however, did not want to rush my process of getting ready for college by leaving the country. But this was a trip that had been prolonged by my family for a couple of years so there was no way I could get out of it. And so, I was about to visit a country that I was not so enthusiastic about. What started out as a dreaded vacation, ended up being one of my most treasured experiences. In hindsight, I realize my attitude was the problem when we first landed in Dhaka. I did not want to enjoy anything...

Tradition In Shirley Jackson's The Lottery

...murder to become a common thing, an event that holds no more value than that of a soccer game. Their ambitions show the reader that they are powerless to change the traditions, it has become ingrained into the very roots of the town. There is literally nothing besides social pressure that keeps this town from ending the primitive ritual. This is of course ironic considering old man warner fears; that if they stop this ritual the town will revert back to a more primitive time. The scariest part of the story comes from a quote by mister summers at the end of the story "All right, folks let's finish quickly." This quote shows how little the life of the “winner” of the lottery holds in the hearts of the town. Not a single person hesitated when they were tasked to kill Tessie, even though just hours before they were all laughing and joking around with Tessie. Tessie’s own child didn’t even hesitated, in fact the boy was given a stone by Mr. Summers! Tessie screamed bloody murder and pleaded to the villager’s humanity, but because of the blind followings of the people, the lottery had taken their very humanity, leaving behind nothing more than a hollowed husk. There was no remorse or hesitation in the killing, the villager’s acted as if they were killing just a common beast. Not only were the villager’s just attempting to carry out the tradition of the lottery, but they wanted to be the one to kill the “winner”. Mrs. Delacroix picked a rock so large that it required two hands just...

...It all began right after I checked in for my flight, I walked towards the gates and was about to enter the line. I was ready to go through the security screening and suddenly my anxiety crept up on my out of nowhere; “Are they going to strip-search me?”. My hands began to shake, “I couldn’t risk it.”, I thought to myself. I quickly popped the xanax pill in my mouth that my roommate gave me and got in line. You see, I’m absolutely terrified of flying. Have you ever been through turbulence? It’s no joke! My roommate was aware of my fear of flying, so he kindly offered me a xanax pill to help calm me during the flight. He told me, I would “blackout” and then I would be fine. But suddenly it hit me that maybe I couldn’t take it in through security and that's when the anxiety hit me. As walked closer towards the gate, I couldn’t help but notice all the security guards; were they looking at me? It felt like they were giving me the mean mug and I began to ask myself, “Why are they looking at me?”. Then I began to get paranoid -I forgot to mention that I ate a weed brownie an hour before all this and it was in full-effect. Now I was truly beginning to freak out! I am not sure how I managed to keep it together, but I finally got to front and put my bags on the belt for screening. I walked through the metal detector, but quickly noticed my bags didn’t. The officer told me there was a “red flag” and they needed to go through my bags. My face quickly became as pale as a ghost, even...

...Waffle A waffle is a leavened batter or dough cooked between two plates, patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. Etymology The word “waffle” first appears in the English language in 1725: "Waffles. Take flower, cream..."[2] It is directly derived from the Dutch wafel, which itself derives from the Middle Dutch wafele.[3] While the Middle Dutch wafele is first attested to at the end of the 13th century, it is preceded by the French walfre in 1185; both are considered to share the same Frankish etymological rootwafla.[4] Depending on the context of the use of wafla, it either means honeycomb or cake. History Medieval origins Waffles are preceded, in the early Middle Ages, around the period of the 9th–10th centuries, with the simultaneous emergence of fer à hosties /hostieijzers (communion wafer irons) and moule à oublies (wafer irons).[7][8] While the communion wafer irons typically depicted imagery of Jesus and his crucifixion, the moule à oublies featured more trivial Biblical scenes or simple, emblematic designs.[7] The format of the iron itself was almost always round and considerably larger than those used for communion.[9][10] The oublie was, in its basic form, composed only of grain flour and water – just as was the communion wafer.[11] It took until the 11th century, as a product of The Crusades bringing new culinary ingredients to Western Europe, for flavorings such as orange blossom water to be added to the oublies; however, locally-sourced...

Nutrition and Exercise Plan

...Nutrition and Exercise Plan Tina D'Antonio SCI/241 September 4, 2012 Joyce Rode In week one, I learned through the SuperTracker that I needed to increase my calorie intake to 2,200 calorie per day to achieve a healthier weight, as I was 99 pounds, and wanted to reach a goal of 105 pound. Even though I eat healthy food, I don’t eat a well-balanced meal. The SuperTracker showed me to implement more fruits, proteins and dairy into my meal plan. Vegetables and whole grains have really never been an issue for me. My other goals were to increase my vitamin D, vitamin A and iron, so I can stop taking supplements and to increase my dietary fiber. Throughout the nine-week program, I found that my eating habits did not improve. My calorie intake never went over 2,000 let alone get up to 2,200. I was although really shocked to learn how much sodium I consume, I always thought I was good with watching my sodium intake. This is why people have to be more concise of what they purchase as it can be high in sodium. The coach center message archive gave me some of the following advice for vitamin D, dietary fiber and iron. Vitamin D their comment was, try to meet your recommendation by trying new recipe ideas for salmon, tuna, and sardines. Dietary fiber the comment was plant foods are where you find fiber-fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains, when your meal has more fiber, it often has fewer calories, and you’ll feel fuller and stay within your calorie allowance. Their comments...

...Atacama Desert, the driest and one of the most lifeless places on earth, occupies the coastal plain in northern Chile. Because ocean winds lose their moisture blowing across the cold waters of the Peru Current, only dry air ever reaches the land, creating a desolate wasteland. The Atacama is so dry that archaeologists have found perfectly preserved relics from ancient times. These include colored textiles woven hundreds of years ago, ancient mud-brick dwellings, and even human mummies. The desert is rich in minerals, however. Coastal plains north and south of the Atacama get more rainfall. To the north, along the coast of Ecuador, lie oppressively hot and humid rain forests. To the south lies an area with a Mediterranean climate of hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Highlands Inland from the coastal plain, the...
