Cvs Caremark to Drop Tobacco

...– 002 February 25, 2014 Essay 2 CVS Caremark Steven Graham 1834-5319 Background and Introduction of CVS Caremark Decision On February 5th CVS Caremark announced that they would cease the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores. This measure is scheduled to begin by October 1, 2014. Once this action is taken, CVS Caremark will be the first national pharmacy chain to drop the sale of tobacco products. The President and CEO of CVS Caremark, Larry Merlo, stated the following, "Ending the sale of cigarettes and tobacco products at CVS/pharmacy is the right thing for us to do for our customers and our company to help people on their path to better health." Tobacco sales represent $2 billion in annual revenue for CVS Caremark. This is causing many to question if this is a good move for CVS Caremark. Analyzing this Decision with Respect to Key Stakeholders It seems crucial to analyze the aforementioned decision with respect to three key stakeholders. The stakeholders that will be analyzed are CVS Caremark employees, shareholders, and customers. This is not an exhaustive list of stakeholders, but it represents fundamental primary stakeholders. Employees of CVS Caremark have a significant stake in the company’s decision to drop the sale of tobacco products. Some employees may fear the significant profit loss that this decision represents. This fear would likely be compounded by the lack of details that CVS Caremark has provided on how they will...

Cvs Caremark

...CVS Health is the United States’ largest pharmacy health care provider. Their mission is to reinvent pharmacy to having a more active, supportive role in each person’s unique health experience and in the greater health care environment—from advising on prescriptions to helping manage chronic and specialty conditions to providing quality walk-in medical care and pharmacy benefits management. CVS Health opened its first store in 1963 and was known as Consumer Value Stores. They then sold health and beauty products. The company was founded in Lowell, Mass. by brothers Stanley and Sidney Goldstein, and partner Ralph Hoagland. Throughout the 60s they grew to 17 stores and opened their first store with a pharmacy department. During the 1970s, they grew to over 200 stores, acquiring stores from Clinton Drug & Discount and Mack Drugstores; they also hit $100 million in annual sales in 1974. In the 1980s they broke ground on the store support center in Woonsocket, RI, which still in 2015 is where their company headquarters belongs. By the end of the 1980s they had nearly 750 stores and had reached $1.6 billion in sales. In the 90s they had acquired more than 3200 stores from Arbor Drugstores, People’s Drug, and “the largest acquisition in the history of the U.S. retail pharmacy industry” from Pevco. They now claimed stores in the Midwest along with the east coast and were breaking ground in the south. In this time frame they also launched the program known as Pharmacare, a...

...University November 16, 2014 CVS/PHARMACY SWOT ANALYSIS In 1963 the Consumer Value Store (CVS) was built for your health and beauty needs, in Lowell, Massachusetts by brothers Stanley and Sidney Goldstein and partner Ralph Hoagland. Through the next few years CVS started to grow and in 1967 pharmacies were being added to CVS’s in Warwick and Cumberland, Rhode Island (RI). After buying several small chain drug stores in the early 1970’s around the surrounding areas/states, CVS created small chain stores in shopping malls. In 1981, CVS broke ground on the Store Support Center in Woonsocket, RI. In 1988 CVS celebrated their 25th anniversary with a total of 750 stores. The 1990’s brought more stores in the new mid Atlantic, and Caremark set up in California. By the late 1990’s, CVS had stretched to 24 states totaling 4, 100 stores. 2001 was the year that CVS launched their ExtraCare Card Program, being the first national pharmacy retailer to launch a loyalty program. In 2005, CVS partnered up with MinuteClinic, and opened up three in their CVS/Pharmacy stores. The next year in 2006, MinuteClinic became the first retail clinic to be accredited by the Joint Commission. In 2008, CVS officially branched to California and Hawaii, by buying Long’s drugstores. In 2014, CVS announced they were deciding to stop the sale of tobacco, which was announced officially on September 3, 2014. With the end of tobacco sales, CVS’s mission statement makes more sense. CVS states they are a pharmacy innovation...

Walgreens Strategic Evolution

...Walgreens: Strategic Evolution 1 America’s largest drugstore chain, Walgreens, had 8,210 locations by 2011, including 7,761 drugstores. Almost 75 percent of Americans lived within five miles of a Walgreens pharmacy, and more than 6 million customers were served each day. Walgreens issued more than 800 million prescriptions annually, representing 20 percent of the U.S. market. Its online business, Walgreens.com, had almost 17 million visitors per month. Walgreens’ strategy had evolved for more than a century in business. By 2012, the company faced a number of major strategic questions, including international expansion and a changing health care environment. History of Pharmacy2 People have been trying to create remedies for illnesses and ailments since the beginning of time, but most historians credit Babylon with the first organized apothecary. This was followed by the Romans, who created a system of pathology and therapy that became standards for Western medicine for more than 1,000 years. For the most part, though, pharmacy remained a sketchy and shadowy business for centuries, practiced by (among others) witch doctors and alchemists. Advances in medicine and the Renaissance era led to more structured and scientific approaches. In 1240, German Emperor Frederick II issued a proclamation establishing the practice of pharmacy along three tenets: (1) separation of the pharmaceutical profession from the medical profession; (2) official supervision (regulation) of pharmacy; and...

Pharmacy Improvement Service at Cvs

...REV: OCTOBER 20, 2006 Pharmacy Service Improvement at CVS (A) Flum looked at Betses. “You told us it was bad, but this bad?” “I told you there were service issues in our pharmacies. But I have to admit, even I didn’t know the whole story.” “So what do we do about it?” “Well, we can’t have 67 solutions for the 67 problems we identified,” Roberts said. “Definitely not,” Grossi agreed. “But do you have an idea what we should do? If you erased that whiteboard and grabbed a pen, could you draw the ‘right’ flow chart for pharmacy operations?” “Actually, I think I could come pretty close. And I think my flow chart would look a lot like both of yours. I’m just not sure which parts of it would be easy to implement and which would be tricky. Mitch, you know these places better than anyone—what kinds of changes would make them really unhappy?” “Anything affecting safety. Everyone—not just the pharmacists—is a fanatic about making sure we fill prescriptions accurately and watch out for the health of our customers. So for example if we said, ‘In the interests of efficiency we want to have the system spit out fewer alerts about drug-drug interactions,’ we would get killed. The pharmacists would march us right out the front door of their stores and tell us never to come back. And I wouldn’t blame them.” Do “Got it. What else?” ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Professor Andrew F. McAfee prepared...

Mortgage

...Leah Dolce ECO 103 Mortgage Project While doing this project, I kept finding myself to be very indecisive as to what I wanted in a home and what things would be important to me if I were to purchase one. This project helped me understand the basics of buying a home such as: where I would want my kids to go to school, how many bedrooms, how many bathrooms, property, neighborhood reputation, and much more. I had very little knowledge about most of the surrounding area so now I know what kind of research I would have to do to make sure I know exatcly what I want when purchasing a home. I did know I wanted it to be at least 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and have an updated kitchen. I was able to find those things in the home I selected but what I didn't realize was what the cost would be. There is a huge financial difference between a 15 year fix and a 30 year fix mortgage. For the home I selected it was a $522.76 difference in the monthly payment and a $91,271.79 difference in the amount of interest I would be paying for the life of the loan. If I was abel to afford such a hefty, monthly payment I would choose the 15 year mortgage because in the long run it would be cheaper. The lesson learned here, though, is find a more affordable house and make updates as you go along. All -in-all I had fun doing this project and it helped me understand the process into buying a home and gave me great internet resources to do...

How to Present to Investors

...nonstop work. Startups are a counterexample to the rule that haste makes waste. (Too much money seems to be as bad for startups as too much time, so we don't give them much money either.) A week before Demo Day, we have a dress rehearsal called Rehearsal Day. At other Y Combinator events we allow outside guests, but not at Rehearsal Day. No one except the other founders gets to see the rehearsals. The presentations on Rehearsal Day are often pretty rough. But this is to be expected. We try to pick founders who are good at building things, not ones who are slick presenters. Some of the founders are just out of college, or even still in it, and have never spoken to a group of people they didn't already know. So we concentrate on the basics. On Demo Day each startup will only get ten minutes, so we encourage them to focus on just two goals: (a) explain what you're doing, and (b) explain why users will want it. That might sound easy, but it's not when the speakers have no experience presenting, and they're explaining technical matters to an audience that's mostly...
