The sport of basketball was able to create an infrastructure that would spark the invention of a foundation in American history and culture through various methods that would unite a nation, eliminate the differences of race found through a history of segregation, and would allow many athletes to create a change in their life through the sport. Throughout the history of sports, basketball has served a very important part in American culture as well as creating a foundation for a staple in the world of sports. Basketball is a very diverse sport that has been influenced by various types of changes and improvements to reflect various differences in American culture. American history has experienced a large amount change through the sport of basketball as the sport united many individuals through a very simple game that allowed players to focus on certain skills and thrive in the game. An example of this is a man named Forrest Allen who played under Naismith who would go to become a legendary college basketball coach. Naismith's legacy included the first great college basketball coach, Forrest Allen who played under Naismith’s coaching at the University of Kansas and continued to follow Naismith and become a coach at Kansas himself, where he would would win a staggering amount of 771 games while coaching at the University of Kansas. (Williams) While coaching at Kansas, Allen had a vast amount of players who would have amazing performances, one of them being a superstar by the name of Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain would become a legend in the history of basketball, as one night in 1962, he would score 100 points and create a record that has yet to be broken. In 1898, a basketball league that would be the first professional league was created, with the players getting paid $2.50 for games played at home and $1.25 for games played on the road.

Each form of mass media wants to be the one to target the audience, so therefore competition between mass media is very strong, because capturing the inside of the sports world is critical. Apart from the competition among the various forms of media there is also competition among each form of the media example Fox network competes with all television networks for a market share of the audience.
