Artificial lighting is considered to be harm to our natural environment, because it changes the inner balances of ecosystem, disturbs living beings original rest patterns, and used large amounts of energies. Additionally, numerous artificial lighting and other energy consuming cause the excessive emissions of carbon dioxide, which aggravate the global warming. Therefore, many experts suggest reducing non-residential lighting time to protect the ecosystem and save limited energy resources.

Regard to our company, lighting and running other office equipment occupies near 40% of total energy costs. In our 225,000 square foot headquarters building, we need approximately 600 kilowatt hours per night for lighting and running office equipment from 6 p.m. to 12 p.m., which will produce more than 360 kilograms carbon dioxide per night, and costs thousands of dollars every month.

A good company should not only push for profit, but also aware the responsibility of being an eco-friendly part in the society. Therefore, our company decided to become an eco-friendly pioneer among financial service companies in the United States as well as reduce our energy costs. Your management has set a new power-off time policy, which states every day after 6:00 p.m., employees should turn off your lights and power down your computers in the building since March 1, 2013.

According to the new power-off time policy, all the employees need to leave your workplaces after 6:00 p.m. thus you do not need to work overtime until late night. This new policy will also encourage you to increase your work efficiencies during daytime since you may go home earlier, and you could have good breaks at home before the next day’s work. Employees will have more time to spend with your families, and female employees who have children could balance your time for both working and taking care of your children. In addition, this new policy will save a large amount of money from energy costs, and company could use portions of the money to provide better working environment and offer more favorable bonus for employees.
