Beethoven was one of the most famous composers of all time, who is best known for his nine symphonies, and his great works on piano. But his Eroica Symphony is perhaps one of his greatest, and yet most puzzling pieces. It is believed that due to the use of emotion in this work, this piece marked the beginning of the Romantic Era. The Eroica changed how people viewed music during that time period.
Beethoven began writing his third symphony during the summer of 1803. He originally entitled the piece, ‘Bonaparte”, after Napoleon Bonaparte of France. However, when Beethoven learned that Napoleon was about to proclaim himself Emperor, he decided to not name it after him. When it was published in 1806, it was given its new title. The title, Eroica …show more content…
While the first two movements it our concepts of heroism, the last two movements almost seem to belong in another symphony instead. The third movement is titled Scherzo (Joke), and the forth movement is the Finale. The theme in the finale actually came long before the Eroica. He first used the theme in 1801 for the finale of his ballet, Die Geschӧpfe des Prometheus. He also used it the next year in Twelve Contredanses, and then again in a piano piece, before using it in his third symphony. These two movements that Beethoven chose to include make many people question what he meant by Heroic. Some believe that his version of heroic has nothing to do with heroism, but instead might refer to the size of the work. This symphony is almost twice as long as the typical 30 minute pieces of that era. Looking back at the first movement, there are also elements that makes some people believe that it still doesn’t fit the concept of heroism we want it to. While there is a bugle call like principle motive, as I mentioned earlier, it is only given to the trumpets three times out of the fifty four times it is used in the score. Trumpets have always been very symbolic of the military, so why did Beethoven to choose to only give it to the trumpets three times? Another

...3-8 Romantic 1817-1827: The establishment of new forms and a personal style which was much more Romantic on paper and in feel. Symphony No. 9 7 Beethoven is known as the developer of the symphony. His extensive development of musical material, themes and motifs usually by modulation resulted in his works being very long and expressive. He also continued to expand the “development” section of his works, adding not only length but also substance.8 This essay will set out to discuss the aspects of the symphony that Beethoven developed with regards to: the programmatic aspects of his symphonies, which instruments he used/added to the symphony (instrumentation), the structure of the symphony, his use of forms and how he used his instruments (orchestration). Programmatic aspects of his symphonies Programme music is purely instrumental (without words) music which is based on an extra-musical stimulus and a programme symphony is a symphony which has a programme. The whole work usually has a subtitle and sometimes each movement has a subtitle as well.9 Programme elements can be seen in Beethoven’s 3rd Symphony (Eroica) which is associated with the concept of heroism, his 5th Symphony which can be seen as an overcoming of his fate (deafness) and the 6th Symphony (Pastoral) which has a subtitle for each movement.7 Beethoven said of his 6th that the “work can be perceived without description”, because it clearly has depictions of bird...

...Listening assignment 2: Beethoven “Eroica” In 1803 Beethoven composed his Third Symphony. It was most played at a private concert during the summer a year later at the estate of Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz and in the following year he gave a public premier in Vienna on April 7th 1805. At the time the audiences were split into 2: Those who rated the symphony a masterpiece and those who said that the piece was too long, difficult and strange. The movements in this symphony were departed in unexpected ways from Beethoven’s other writings for symphony especially with the first movement of this symphony being as long as the symphonies from a generation earlier. This symphony was first called the Bonaparte because Beethoven highly admired Napoleon Bonaparte, his hero who promised to lead humanity into a new age of liberty, equality, and fraternity. Napoleon was like a hero to Beethoven, but when the symphony became published in 1806 Beethoven realized that the things her saw in Bonaparte became illusions and he change the name of his Third Symphony from “Bonaparte” to “Sinfonia Eroica… composta per festeggiare il sovvenire di un grand Uomo” which translates to “ Heroic Symphony… composed to celebrate the memory of a great man. This great man was his original patron, Prince Franz Joseph von Lobkowitz. Before all of this, Beethoven started going deaf and thought that it would be wortless for him to continually compose for he thought that a deaf musician is like a blind painter…...

Beethoven Symphony Research Paper

...The word symphony is derived from the Greek word symphonia, meaning "agreement or concord of sound” and was often used in the place of the word consonance. Earliest incorporations of the word symphony began during the Baroque era. For most of this period, the terms symphony and sinfonia were used for a wide range of different compositions, including instrumental pieces used in operas, sonatas and concertos and were usually part of a larger work. By the 18th century, the opera sinfonia (Italian overture) had a standard structure of three contrasting movements: fast, slow, fast/ dance-like. It is this form that is often considered as the most prevalent of the orchestral symphony and the terms overture, symphony and sinfonia were often seen as...

Music History from Primary Sources an Introductory Essay

...Moldenhauer Archives at the Library of Congress | Table of Contents Music History from Primary Sources An Introductory Essay Alfred Mann A vellum leaf, 22 by 17 cm., from a prayer book. The letter forms of early Gothic script suggest the twelfth century, or a period even earlier. Neumes (marked in red) are placed above the first four lines of the Latin text. The entire page is richly illuminated in black, red, and blue, with a heavy gold layer decorating the initial A for the phrase beginning "Adoro te." The leaf was obtained for the Moldenhauer Archives from the music dealer and publishing firm Schneider, Tutzing. The Art of Musical Notation In its primary sources, music merges with the representational arts. Oral tradition has played a fundamental role in all ages, but in its formal sense, history--and the history of music--begins with the visual record. Musical notation, having emerged on a wide scale in all civilizations, produced in itself a highly individual record of artistic endeavor. The medieval monks who compiled the missals and other liturgical books for the service of worship rose from their function as scribes to artists in their own right; among the greatest documents of Baroque art are the holographs by Bach; and an entirely novel phase in artistic musical score design was initiated in the twentieth century. The primary sources of music reproduced in this volume rely on various aspects of the graphic arts, but foremost among them stands the representation...
