PLEASE READ THIS FIRST PAGE CAREFULLY. IT SHOULD BE DELETED WHEN YOU SUBMIT YOUR OUTLINE FOR GRADING.
General Rationale
This document contains the template for the preparation outline, which is required for your formal speaking assignments in this course. This document is intended to guide you and save you time in formatting your assignment correctly. Please use this template to create your outlines, paying careful attention to the expectations required for your assignment.
General Writing Style 1. The entire outline, including the thesis statement, should be written in complete sentences. 2. The general purpose should be one of the four generally identified: to inform, to persuade, to entertain, or to commemorate. 3. The specific purpose should be written as a more detailed infinitive phrase. (An infinitive phrase begins with to added to a verb and an object. Here is an example: “To apply for a scholarship.”) 4. Questions should not appear on the outline; instead, you should use the space to answer such questions or to explain the reasoning behind your inquiry. You do not want to leave your professor doubting whether you know your material. You may, however, ask questions when you actually deliver the presentation. 5. When using research for subpoints and sub-subpoints, you should write enough of your interpretation of what the point means to demonstrate to your professor your understanding of the source. Use parenthetical citations to indicate which reference items reinforce materials. 6. Every item on the references list should be cited parenthetically in the outline at least once.
What Should and Should Not Be Changed
The general formatting for the outline template is correct, though please do the following: * Fill in all the top heading information (e.g., Name, Professor,…Thesis statement) without removing any of the italicized labels. This is necessary information for your audience (your professor). * Fill in all the outline information (e.g., Introduction, Attention-getter, Transition, etc.) without removing any of the italicized labels. Those are signals to you and your professor. * Eliminate any prompts that are in brackets by typing over them (e.g., Main point, Subpoint, Summary, etc.). * Do not forget the references page and corresponding parenthetical citations in the appropriate subpoint and sub-subpoint places on the outline. Several samples are provided to show you how to format this page. Replace the references of that sample with your own relevant references. If research is not required for the presentation, eliminate that page. * Put your presentation title on the second page header where it prompts you. * Eliminate this instructions page entirely once you have read it so that the document begins with the top heading information. * Save your file with the following convention: First Last SPCH 275 Week # Assignment Outline.
Final Note: You should not assume that this particular template shows you exactly how many main points, subpoints, and sub-subpoints you should use. Every formal outline has its distinct number of main points and subordinate points. The number of those points depends on your speech topic, its content, and your development. Thus your outline will vary from what you've been given here. The traditional alphanumeric system of a formal outline, however, does not change and should be followed.

Name(s): Florence Nicastro
Professor: Professor Margaret Terry
Assignment: Informative Speech
Title of Presentation: Kangaroo Care for Premature Babies
Date: December 2, 2015

General Purpose: To Inform my audience about the use of Kangaroo Care

Specific Purpose: To fill my audience in on the benefits of Kangaroo Care with regard to the health and recovery of preterm infants.

Thesis Statement: Providing Kangaroo Care to preterm infants is a benefit that each infant should receive one they are stable enough to be out of the incubator for extended periods of time.
-------------------------------------------------

I. Introduction
A. Attention-getter: How many of you know how many babies are born prematurely in the United State? 1 in every 10 births is a premature birth.
B. Relevance statement: Most of you are young, and soon will start families; this is something you will want to know should you ever become a NICU Mom or Dad.
C. Credibility statement: I have seen the benefits of kangaroo care by other parents when my son was in the NICU for over 30 days.
D. Thesis statement: The use of Kangaroo Care with preterm children helps them to have a greater bonding with their parents, reduces the stress they suffer and helps them to have more calm; all of this helps their brains and development of their emotions also.
E. Preview statement: I hope to inform you about how kangaroo care with preemies may help decrease their hospital stay and help them be healthier and more affectionate due to the type of hands on attention they will be getting.

Transition: To begin, I will tell what kangaroo care is. It is a method used with premature babies that involves skin-to-skin contact with the infant and parents
II. Body

A. Main Point Kangaroo care is a technique used to connect the baby to the parent/care giver with skin to skin contact. The infant only has on a diaper and the parents’ shirt or a blanket over their back, the parent will have no undergarment on, just a loose fitting shirt. The infant is now in an upright position on the bare chest of the parent.

1. First, the old thinking was the infant needs to be left alone and kept away from germs in their incubators.
a. This prevents the parent and infant from bonding and developing a connection
b. Not being able to hold or touch your baby can bring on post-partum depression
2. Second, the health benefits for the infants and parents are over whelming.
a.) The benefits are that the baby will have a more stabilized heart rate, a more regular breathing pattern, improved oxygen levels, they get more sleep time, the baby will gain weight more rapidly, less episodes of crying, an increase of successful breastfeeding episodes, and the potential for earlier hospital discharge. b.) The parental benefits are better bonding and feeling closer to their babies, for the mom this will help to increase breast milk supply, there will be a boost in the confidence of their ability to care for their baby, better feeling of knowing their babies are taken good care of, and there is also a heightened sense of control.

Transition: The next step would be to explain why kangaroo care works.

A. Thirdly, could you imagine going 30, 60 or even 200 days with the most minimal human contact and interaction, try being new to this world and not being touched!!!
1. To begin, premature babies cannot regulate their own temperature, when they snuggle with their parent, the parents breasts adjust to keep the babies skin at the proper temperature.
2. Next, once the baby is comfortable and snuggled up they will drift off to sleep and it is a restful sleep for them. a. All of this helps the baby conserve energy which will redirect their calorie usage to help them grown and gain weight.
b. The last way that kangaroo care works is that it has been shown to have positive effects on brain development.

Transition: The next factor is when to begin kangaroo care with the baby.

B. There are many things to consider when choosing to begin kangaroo care, most importantly is if the baby is ready to being.
1. First you need to discuss with the doctor if the baby is stable enough for you to begin. If the baby is get started right away!!!
2. Secondly you need to be ready to commit the time, you should kangaroo for at least one hour and can even go up to 24 hours, depending on your NICU policies.
3. Third is to get you prepared and comfortable and ready to hold and comfort your baby. You need to make sure you are comfortable and ready to sit for an extended period of time.
a. While you are kangarooing you and the baby will be monitored by a nurse and they will help to determine how long to kangaroo with the baby and when it is time end the session.

III. Conclusion A. To wrap this up I just want to remind you that the benefits of kangaroo care help the baby to grown and gain weight. It help the calm the baby, improve their breathing and to help decrease their crying times. The parents are able to bond and connect with their baby. Spending time like this with the baby not only helps them it also helps the parents to heal, not to suffer the guilt of having done something wrong and they feel needed in the life and care of their special baby.

B. So in conclusion, I pray none of you ever have to know the ins and outs of kangaroo care, but if you or someone you love does, please remember the comfort that any baby and parent will get from kangaroo care can only help to get them healthier and on the road to going home.
