Memory is the faculty by which the mind stores and remembers information. An example used to describe memory in this video is about a girl who is exhausted and rushing to get home from work. During her drive home, the driver of a fruit truck was pushed down by a shadow figure who ran off with a crate of bananas. Bernice, the girl who saw while stopped at a stop sign, called the police and described this man; a few days later, she was asked to come back to the police station to identify him. At his trial, a memory expert was called to the stand and helped him prove his innocence. American psychologist and memory expert Elizabeth Loftus has spent decades proving how eye witnesses reconstruct their memories after accidents or crimes. In one of her experiments, two groups watched a film of a car accident. The first group was asked how fast the cars were going when they smashed each other and the second group was asked how fast the cars were going when they hit each other. The first group, estimated much higher speeds than the second group. Smashed was the leading word that altered the witnesses’ memory. This is why Bernice’s testimony was not enough. Immediately, I called my two sisters who were also looking for my dog, Layla, and I warned them not to come my way and that there was a Pit Bull ready to attack me. Being my older sisters, they quickly came to my rescue as they watched me get knocked to the ground and bit. They both witnessed the same exact incident at the same exact time, from the same exact angle. The only difference was when they were asked questions about it. My father asked my oldest sister, Amanda, if I was attacked by the Pit Bull and she said yes and came up with a slightly false story.
