Evaluate a famous action adventure movie and explain why it works for the audience
The Lord of the Rings series is one of the most famous action adventure movies of its time and is an acclaimed classic as well. It is an epic tale of action and adventure that goes far and beyond cultural boundaries and leads the audience to a mythical world that is suspended between the world we know and the fantasy we all wish we lived in. This movie has gained international fame and set a benchmark for the action adventure/ fantasy genre with its classic good versus evil plot, the mythical references and the magical realism that is artistically woven into the plot. The film is inspired by the series of books written J.R Tolkien and according to the author, he created ‘a secondary creation' that became reality that pulled the audience in as soon as they start watching the movie.
Another reason why this movie was a ground breaking success is that it offers detailed battle scenes, hand to hand combat, thrill, suspense and a splash of romance on the side. Let’s not forget the mind blowing locations, costume and the superb animation that never fails to amaze the viewers of all ages. The audience is captivated by the conflict that arises in the main plot and spreads through the various subplots that are introduced in the later parts of the movie. Each aspect of the storyline is given due homage by the actors. The Middle world also takes on a universal appearance with which the audience can relate to on a personal and political level. The subliminal messages that the movie propagates so successfully and in such a powerful manner is another huge factor that plays well in the movie’s fame.
Lord of the Rings works for the audience because it presents fantasy in a very realistic package. The human emotions of fear, courage, friendship and power are delivered perfectly making the movie more relatable for the audience. The epic tale, beautiful majestic sites and captivating characters also account for the allure of the movie. The language, music and dialogues that Tolkien used in his books and later on used in the movies add to the magical world that is portrayed in the movie. All these elements help the audience to overcome the wall that is present between illusion and reality. They simply lose their grasp of the real world and travel through the ‘middle world' or the ‘secondary world' and start to believe in it as their own.
Lord of the Rings portrays characters that are heroic, noble, honest and strong. They have the element of innocence, youth and indomitable courage in the face of fear that make them all the more appealing to the viewers. The prolog of the movie is a detailed history of the world being depicted in it and how evil prevailed in that time. As the audience watches, within minutes the dynamics shift, the peaceful hobbit village setting transitions on screen to reveal the evil Sauron in his full malicious form.
In-depth analysis of the movie leads us to conclude that modern sensibility allows the audience to relate their own situation with that of the characters in the movie. Many metaphors, similes are used in the dialogues and songs of the movie that subtly point out the follies of human condition and how it can be dealt with. Gollum is one such character who is a perfect personification of human experience and how it is affected by the evils of the world. Lord of the Rings balances the fantasy and makes the storyline all the more believable by keeping human emotions and weaknesses in check. The movie pulls the viewers in a world full of magic, excitement, thrill, action, adventure, mythical beings, good vs evil and last but not the least- love, friendship and courage.

Odyssey Movie And Book Comparison

...Have you ever read a book and then watched the movie? When you are watching the movie you find some things similar, but most of it is different, right? I read the book The Odyssey and watched the movie O Brother Where Art Thou? I compared the similarities and the differences. When I was doing that, I found a lot of the same things in the movie as they were in the book. This was a movie and book that were different, but the same in different ways that were sometimes hidden in the storyline of O Brother Where Art Thou? I thought there were many similarities in the movie and in the book. One that really caught my attention was the prophecy. In the movie when the men were riding with the blind guy on the train track he said, “ You guys will seek a great fortune, but not the one you are looking for…” In the book Odysseus goes to the underworld and Tiresias of Thebes tells him, “ If you don’t show restraint and control you won’t make it home.” The prophecies are alike in many ways....

Dinosaurs Persuasive Essay

...It is impossible for man to actually film a T Rex hunting or a Triceratops family grazing along a stream in real life. Through the years, directors have relied on scientific knowledge to create their vision of how dinosaurs looked, moved, and interacted with each other and their environment. Hal Roach directed the 1940 sci fi movie, One Million B.C. for United Artists. His solution was to creatively film "dinosaurs" using enlarged iguanas and an alligator with glued on fins, sails, spikes, and horns. A pig running around in a rubber suit starred as a Triceratops and fought an Allosaurus (man walking upright in a rubber suit). At the time audiences liked the dino-action, but it was not a box office smash (Gross, Early Dinosaur Cinema). One Million B.C. did receive two Academy Awards nominations in 1941 for Best Special Effects and Best Musical Score (Oscars, 2016). By today's movie standards, the 1940 special effects seem corny, cheap, and would be considered animal cruelty. An interesting fact was that many of the ground breaking special effects extra "dinosaur" footage and outtakes shot for One Million B. C. has been used in over 25 other films over the next 40 years. This proves that Americans have the appetite for dinosaur movies, even if they are poverty row films with reused special...

...Context: The Raiders of the Lost Ark The word “ordinary” simply does not correlate well with the movie Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark. This move is the spark that ignites people of all ages into a great love for the action/adventure genre and it takes you on a 115-minute thrill ride. Each scene allows every person watching to have a connection with the storyline. This move has inspired and challenged many writers, directors and producers to challenge their own selves when including archeology, shifting sands, mysteries of the past, heroes and heroines. This is a modern high action/adventure movie; all others must now be measured by it. The movie cost 22 million dollars to make, however it reaped 200 million dollars during its first run. It also won numerous awards from ceremonies such as the American Academy Awards, British Academy Awards, Golden Globes and the list goes on. The Raiders of the Lost Ark is number 60 on the top 100 films of all time. The producers, actors, locations of the filmmaking, the reminiscence of the older movie era and the hints of a Christian culture, were all detrimental to the making of this movie. They were the key to success and if any of these main points were changed, the movie would not have prospered. The Movie Calibrators The real story of Indiana Jones started in 1973 when director George Lucas was looking for ideas for a movie about an archaeologist in a leather jacket, felt fedora with a three-day beard who carries a bullwhip...

The Cast consist of many favorites in film such as George Clooney, John Goodman, Holly Hunter, John Turturro, and Tim Blake Nelson. The film O Brother, according to well-known film critic Roger Ebert (2000), “is based on Homer’s The Odyssey” (p.1), this is an epic Greek poem around 700 B.C. Although the setting is much different, the Homeric journey of three would be prisoners of the late 1930s are similar to The Odyssey and its theme of perseverance. The movie O Brother, Where Art Thou however has a comical twist accompanied by great Gospel/Bluegrass music, and scenes that play into an allegorical concept including references to repentance and salvation during the depression of that era. The storyline in this movie the collaborating efforts of the Coen brothers and cinematographer Roger Deakins bring together a musical and adventurous comedy filled with action. Beyond Objectification

...disappointing for our society nowadays. In the entire film, we are not provided by strong traits of Ann Darrow’s personality other than her helplessness and common gender stereotypes. It seemed that Ann Darrow didn’t have anything else to offer other than being the endangered beauty of the film. King Kong objectifies and enhance one aspect of Ann Darrow in the entire movie: her physical beauty, apparently her only role is to be the object of desire or wealth for Kong of the principal male roles in the film. My goal in this paper is to show that situation and her complexity, how that portrayal of Ann Darrow’s character determines the continuity of the movie and her genre. Clearly Merian C. Cooper y Ernest B. Schoedsackare portray Ann’s character in order to don’t deviate and enhance the overall concept of an adventure film and produces greater meaning to the final quote: "The beauty killed the beast" and the evidence brought in this paper helps to support my belief. In the scene when Carl Denham is discussing with the agent, he clearly states to the audience the motif of having Ann Darrow in King Kong and not only in his movie: “Because the public - bless 'em - must have a pretty face”. This quote reveals the audience’s endless fascination with the spectral surface of bodies and their reduced and worthless expectations of Ann Darrow’s character. Then Ann Darrow is portrayed as a...

The Matrix and the Hero's Journey

... A Blender of Ideas In 1999, the year it came out, the movie “The Matrix” directed by the Wachovski brothers was considered by many as one of the best action movies in the film industry in decades. It was understandable after the success it had at the box office, and its success among viewers, which was not only local but global also. The structure of the journey of the hero, Neo, is nothing new. In fact, it starts and it ends like all the other journeys that preceded it, with the advantage of being rich in thought-provoking themes in comparison to the other movies of the genre. In order to help in the development of those themes, the Wachovski brothers use a lot of allusions, references from religions, myths, philosophy, literature, without changing the pattern of their hero’s journey which is clearly the same as the one represented in Joseph Campbell’s hero’s journey. Using the latter, it would possible to understand the use of certain figures of imagery, camera movements, and other tools by the Washovski brothers in the making of this film. 1- Departure Just like any other hero’s journey, the story of the matrix starts with the departure, which is comprised of five steps: a) The call to adventure b) Refusal of the Call Fotso 2 c) Supernatural Aid d) The Crossing of the first threshold e) The Belly of the Whale During this first stage of the journey, the hero has to separate from the world he knows, and in the movie “The Matrix” there are lots of symbols, motifs with connections...

Toy Story

...The movie goes on to play a song titled “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman, which further creates accurate understanding of the relationship between the two. Midway through the movie, after problems continuously mount between Woody and Andy’s new toy Buzz Light-Year, the two began to realize their common interest despite, however, their both rather selfish agendas. On one hand you have, Woody, who’d like to see Buzz completely out of the picture, whereas, on the other, Buzz is preoccupied by the Illusion that he has to save the Universe from Emperor Zurg. Eventually, Woody and Buzz realized, that there are people feelings involved in their nasty hate relationship. The other toys had no idea where Buzz and Woody had gone, as this hatred toward one another led Woody to trick buzz into being flung out the window. The director, however, did a great job at making the viewer have feelings for both Woody and Buzz so your personal feelings wouldn’t side with either of the two. By the end, Woody and Buzz would become the best of friends, aimlessly in search for the van that had left them behind when Andy was moving to a new home.
