IT 513: Writing and Critical Thinking for the IT Professional

Professor Lynne Williams

8/24/2015

The job market has fluctuated over the years based upon the economy. Recently, more and more college graduates are getting hired by highly respectable companies. National Associate of Colleges and Employers (NACE) conducted a survey which stated employers will hire 9.6% more college graduates for the U.S. workforce than the previous year (Adams, 2015). NACE is a non-profit group based out of Pennsylvania that surveyed more than one thousand companies. They received responses from 162 companies from all facets of the employment sector (Adams, 2015). The survey asked employers to rate the academic degrees they target for employee hires. The most coveted degree for employers is engineering with a seventy two percent hiring rate (Adams, 2015). Organizations look to hire graduates with a business degree at an astounding rate of sixty eight percent (Adams, 2015). The degrees that bring up the rear are humanities, health sciences, agriculture, and education. That shouldn’t warrant someone not going for a degree in that particular field. The same survey asked employers to rate the most coveted skill in newly hired employees. Critical thinking is the most coveted skill, followed by problem solving, working well in a team, and then proper professionalism and a strong work ethic (Adams, 2015). The least coveted skill is career management. No matter what, this survey says students who are avid about a particular field should pursue that degree, according to Dan Black the immediate past president of NACE’s board and leader of EY (Adams, 2015). EY is America’s largest recruiting for accounting and professional services (Adams, 2015). The college hiring process mirrors the economy,

...had studied the product to the extent that we felt satisified in what we knew. We also found that we tended to look for the best price after we had done the necessary research. We also found that if it was a bigger decision like a computer or higher ticket product we would study out the product more, but if it were a lower ticket iteam we worked more on inpulse. We belive that this holds true for the whole of the consumer world. Most of us before purchasing wanted to either use the product or try it to ensure that we liked what we were about to buy. Most of us found that Best Buy satisfied this end very well. Best Buy constatly has products out of the package so that you can play around with the product before you buy it. This helps their marketing plan, because as they sell you they can show you what the product does and why it is helpful for your needs. We all found this very helpful and even helped us to become more educated in our purchase as well as begin some loyality to Best Buy. As stated in the text book many consumers buy based on past experience, price and service. The consumers first create a want of the product and this is what Best Buy specilizes in, creating and satisfying the want. College Admissions Essay: The Best Time Of My Life

...“Life’s not out to get you, despite the things you’ve been through…” A quote I will never forget. As a young aspiring musician, there will always be hardships and sinkholes. Three years of work turned to six, and now to nine. Although I fell apart after these fateful days, my achy bones tell a story along with my tattered clothes from each night after that December. 13 year old Jenaro, a wannabe local musician, has his first show only days away from turning 14. The event drew closer and I envisioned it being the best time of my career, possibly my life. That fateful night brought panic attacks, anger, and my deep seeded self-loathing up front to the masses, and I failed myself. A tightly packed crowd watched on as a younger me broke down under my internal turmoil reaching its boiling point. Repression set in, I was certain I’d never pursue music after that night. Secluded, I hid myself for close to a year after that day. I was humbled by my experience, but deeply I knew I couldn’t just give up forever. Mid way through the spring, my phone vibrated in my...

Geek Squad

...In 1994, Robert Stephens, was a computer science college dropout that founded Geek Squad with $200 and a bicycle in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Dressed in white button-down shirts, too-short black pants, white socks and clip on ties, Geek Squad technicians (known as Agents) repaired computers in local businesses and in customer homes. Stephens had the idea that pulling up on a bicycle dressed like a “geek” would inspire a weird confidence in his computer repair skills. It did. Eight years later, Geek Squad was acquired by Best Buy for an undisclosed amount. Today, Geek Squad is comprised of over 20,000 highly skilled and specially trained computing Agents, home entertainment installers (GSI), Autotechs and appliance repair technicians (GSR’s) located in all U.S. Best Buy stores, at Geek Squad stand-alone locations as well as at service centers located nationwide. Geek Squad provides residential and commercial product repair, support, and installation services both in store and on site. Best Buy acquired Geek Squad to help develop a technological support system for its customers. At the time of acquisition, Best Buy sold computers but didn’t have an effective way to service them. It’s one thing to know the difference between two computers, but another to be able to effectively diagnose a wide range of problems and have the required parts to do so. This related acquisition allowed Best Buy and Geek Squad customers to get a premium level of customer service for their technology...

When the iPhone was released Sprint lost thousands of customers who changed service to purchase the new Apple iPhone. Since Sprint has a larger network across America and a 4G connection speed we are expecting a shift in customers when this phone gets released. The market plan will target a specific audience, new sale promotions, new tactics to compete against our competitors, and the distribution plan should be fairly easy with a timeline with safeties to catch any hiccups. The target audience I am going to initially market the Palm Pre is America’s college students because I think that they would be the most receptive to the new cellular calling packages I want to offer with the new Palm Pre. The college student population across America in 2008 was 12 million plus according to the U.S. Census Bureau. This market has the right demographics and is strong market in size, age, gender mix, ethnicity mix, and education. ...ROWE Program at Best Buy Schantee’ D. Sales Dr. Mensah-Dartey Leadership and Organizational Behavior September 1, 2011 Describe the culture of Best Buy. Organizational culture is determined by the allocation of core values among the extreme numbers of employees in any organization. The culture of Best Buy can be described as a fast-paced, high energy team orientated business that strives to appreciate the essentials of their consumers, but its culture has immensely changed. The company at one time worked long hours. Because Best Buy addressed issues on the spot this required numerous hours, there were individuals who would work 24 hours and miss out on important family dates because the commitment and long hours Best Buy required of them. Prior to the ROWE program being implemented employees had to solve the problem before their day was over, regardless of the number of hours it took. For example, the guy who stayed up for 72 hours straight to write a report that was due. Yes, he was given a vacation because of the time he put in, but unfortunately he ended up in the hospital. There is a possibility that this individual may not have ended up in the hospital had the ROWE program been implemented. He would have been able to work from home.
