Leadership

...60 Academy of Management Perspectives February A R T I C L E S Leadership and Neuroscience: Can We Revolutionize the Way That Inspirational Leaders Are Identified and Developed? by David A. Waldman, Pierre A. Balthazard, and Suzanne J. Peterson Executive Overview Recent advances in the field of neuroscience can significantly add to our understanding of leadership and its development. Specifically, we are interested in what neuroscience can tell us about inspirational leadership. Based on our findings, we discuss how future research in leadership can be combined with neuroscience, as well as potential neurofeedback interventions for the purpose of leadership development. We also consider ethical implications and applications to management-related areas beyond leadership. L eadership development is a multibillion-dollar industry, with in-house as well as external consulting groups offering leadership development techniques and programs for their clients. The efficacy of traditional leadership development methods, however, has recently been called into question (Haines, 2009), with many researchers recognizing the need to go beyond traditional leadership assessment methods, which typically involve evaluating leader behaviors and qualities through some sort of survey process through which followers or peers rate a leader’s effectiveness. In particular, recent advances in neuroscience are expanding our understanding of behavior and learning...

Gould, CFA Adam.Gould@morganstanley.com US Equity Strategy The 2013 Playbook We are launching our 2013 US equity outlook today. We have been cautious on US equities for much of the last two years. Our concerns around US deficit / debt and the obvious borrowing from the future that occurs from unconventional policy, the European sovereign crisis, and slower growth in emerging markets generally remain, but the acuteness of these issues appears for now to be less sharp. Our 2013 year-end target calls for low-to-mid single digit upside (Exhibit 1) predicated on our view that 2014 corporate earnings are likely to modestly recover from our 2013 forecasted level, perhaps with profits troughing during the April 2013 earnings season. Our year-end 2013 S&P500 price target is 1434, and our bull and bear targets are 1733 and 1135 (Exhibit 1). Improving Michigan Confidence and tightening corporate spreads drive the relative improvement in our earnings outlook. Franchising and Franchise Relationship

...Franchising and Franchise relationship Introduction Various researchers that have developed models for examining businesses over years assume that companies should pass through four stages during their life cycle: start-up, growth, maturity and decline. The most critical of all are the start-up and growth stages. In the first stage the business makes its primary steps in attempt to create a market presence, the primary base of customers. The start-up stage is generally characterized by innovation, high risk, and low profit margins. Stage two or the growth phase of the business is when the business establishes its niche in the market. This is the phase where the business owners start to establish their brand identity and generate brand loyalty within their customer base using sound marketing practices. Although the focus of this stage is to maintain the core customer group and build trust and goodwill among the customers, this stage is marked by a rise in consumer demand and a consequent requirement of increased inputs in terms of production, manufacturing, and general operations to keep up with the rising sales and continue growth. The growth phase is thus marked by increased sales, rise in profit margins and thus establishment of the brand name in the market. Once you have given consideration to expanding, the next step is determining the best method to grow your business. The business has many strategies available. The company can choose to go along with...

Being that Anheuser-Busch has been operating since 1852, has 13 breweries nation-wide, and is one of the most iconic breweries in the world, it truly is a unique comparison of “David vs. Goliath” for these two companies. ...presGRADUATE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS STANFORD UNIVERSITY CASE NUMBER: EC-15 FEBRUARY 2000 CISCO SYSTEMS: A NOVEL APPROACH TO STRUCTURING ENTREPRENEURIAL VENTURES Mike Volpi, vice president of business development at Cisco Systems, was in his office in San Jose at Cisco’s headquarters on June 27, 1997. He was considering a set of strategic questions that he had faced many times since joining Cisco’s business development group in 1994. Volpi’s colleagues had recently identified a new networking opportunity in optical routers, and Volpi wondered how Cisco should pursue the opportunity. Should Cisco develop the product internally, or should they pursue external talent that was more familiar with the technology and market segment? If the external route was the best strategy to get the right product to market on time, should Cisco build its own external venture – or just acquire somebody outright? NETWORKING OPPORTUNITY: PIPELINKS For the previous two years, Cisco had been preaching about the promise of a multiservice network – a single network capable of transporting data, voice, and video. Cisco’s service provider customers agreed that network convergence would ultimately improve cost effectiveness and allow them to expand their service offerings. However, most service providers were saddled with huge investments in their existing circuit-based voice networks. This situation implied a market need for optical (Sonet/SDH) routers that leveraged the existing infrastructure while enabling...
