The Betsy Ross House, birthplace of the original American flag, is bursting with sights and sounds from the mid 1700s. Built over 250 years ago, it truly captures the idea of Betsy Ross’s position as a pioneering businesswoman who used the Declaration of Independence to support her family. After being restored by the Betsy Ross Foundation, the house includes three and a half floors and six rooms, each complete with everyday items Betsy and her family used. Original parts of the home embellish this national shrine including the upholstery shop, and the authentic brick on the exterior of the house.

Right Inside Panel: Betsy Ross
Betsy Ross is not only the mother of the original American flag, but also played a major role in early feminism and the birth of The United States. She was a wife, working mother, and business visionary who drove a life loaded with both triumph and catastrophe. Born on New Years Day in 1752, she quickly began her journey to flag-making when she became a Quaker, or member of a peaceful Christian religion. She fell in love with her husband, John Ross, but they were eventually disowned from the Quakers because the marriage was against their faith. They owned and ran an upholstery shop together in the house, until he was killed in the War of Independence. She quickly remarried and had two …show more content…
The flag, sewn in 1777, truly stresses the image of freedom and liberty George Washington wanted to create for the American nation. Betsy Ross met with the committee of three congressman including Robert Morris, George Ross, and George Washington to brainstorm design ideas and get approval to create flag. George Ross was the uncle of Betsy’s late husband, John Ross. Many people think this contributed to the fact that the committee chose Betsy to sew the flag. Proud to be a major factor of her nation’s birth, she did not

...stories all contain common myths the American public believes. The signing of the Declaration of Independence, Betsy Ross’ design of the American flag, and Paul Revere’s midnight ride all contain factual inaccuracies or exaggerations. When learning American history, students typically believe that all fifty-six delegates at the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. Americans celebrate this date as Independence Day. The actual date, however, that America declared independence from England was July 2, 1776. The next couple days were spent going over the original draft written by Thomas Jefferson. The confusion of the two dates is because...

...1- Betsy Ross( 1752-1836)- In 1776, the United States of America became a great nation free from Britain's rule. The U.S. became a nation full of freedom and opportunity, symbolized by many great icons. These icons were The Liberty Bell, statue of Liberty, the District of Columbia, and also the most known, The American Flag. This flag symbolizes strength, freedom, and also the rights and liberty of its people. The mere sight of the flag has granted men and women the courageousness and disposition to sacrifice their own lives so as to guard what it means to them personally. The American Flag was more than just a flag, it was an idea that brought citizens of the United states into unity. America was now not underneath the management of Britain...

...| | COVER STORY Is Wilbur Ross Crazy? Like a fox, maybe. His bets on steel plants, textile mills, and other woebegone assets are risky, but they're paying off A damp November wind blows off Lake Erie and across the Cleveland steel works, leaving a dusting of snow on the hulking metal buildings, many of which have long since fallen into disrepair. A rusting monument to America's industrial past, the Cleveland plant once employed some 18,000 workers who manufactured 500 different kinds of steel used in everything from General Motors (GM ) cars to Maytag (MYG ) appliances. These days, the sprawling site, which spans both banks of the Cuyahoga River, is largely still. Just two mills, manned by about 1,200 workers are still operating, although at something far below capacity. To most observers, the Cleveland plant looks like the last gasp of a dying Rust Belt behemoth, but not to Wilbur L. Ross. Ross is a collector of the junked, the unloved, the wretched refuse of an economy that has mostly given up making things in favor of buying them elsewhere. Ross, who picked up the plant for a song in February, 2002, is almost laughably contrarian. In May, he added mammoth Bethlehem Steel to his International Steel Group Inc. He has also bet big on Japanese banks, Korean insurance, U.S. textiles, and telecom. All are part of his growing empire of the damned. QUICK TURNAROUNDS At 66, an age when peers are looking toward retirement, Ross is taking on more risk, bigger deals...

It should not be thought that Ethics merely relates to the “Life and Death” issues in our Professional life – Abortion, Contraception, Euthanasia and the like. Ethical issues affect some part of almost every consultation, even if the ethical issue is something more mundane like obtaining adequate consent for an examination or respecting a patient’s dignity. Indeed, it could be argued that the Consultation skills that we foster so assiduously are actually Ethical skills – and that we need to know the patient’s “Ideas, Concerns and Expectations” in order to respect his Autonomy as well as in order to improve the outcome of the Consultation. In the 1998/99 academic year, I was appointed the deanery’s Medical Ethics fellow with a bursary from the MDU. I developed an approach to the teaching of GP ethics based on two half day sessions, which...

Durkheim Did Not Say “Normlessness”

...Durkheim’s own definition while the other definitions showed little or no relationship to the original concept. The original concept was based on an analysis of the economy, more particularly the business cycle, and refers only to the structure of society and not to the mental state of the individual. An attempt is made to discover the source of such a widespread and well-accepted error. All of us are concerned about the introductory course in sociology, no matter the august reaches of academe we might have attained. Nearly all of us have taught it at least once, if only as teaching assistants during our graduate school days. Some of us always teach it. The rest depend on it as a basis for their advanced courses, for a supply of research assistants, and ultimately to build public appreciation and support for the field. If we think of the number of students who take introductory sociology in just one small college in one semester, let alone in a major university over many years, we can easily appreciate the influence that these courses have on our discipline. All of us have an interest in the quality of introductory course instruction, including the accuracy of material in the textbooks used in these courses. Between 1973 and 2003, Teaching Sociology published eleven articles whose titles...

Emotional Ads

...Rough working draft. Please do not quote without author’s permission. Patti Williams is Assistant Professor of Marketing at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, 1400 Steinberg/Dietrich Hall, Philadelphia, PA 19104 Thanks to Carol Scott, Jennifer Aaker, Bob Bjork, Gavan Fitzsimons, Debbie MacInnis and Don Morrison for their generous donations of time and support to my dissertation research, upon which this paper is based. Special thanks to Jennifer for her insight and editing skills in creating this version of the paper. This research was funded in part by the Procter and Gamble Marketing Innovation Fund. Particular thanks to Chris Allen for his efforts in facilitating my relationship with P & G. Abstract Emotional advertisements have a substantial impact on consumer attitudes, as well as upon purchase intentions. However, research on the influence of emotional appeals on memory has been somewhat mixed, with some researchers asserting that they result in poor consumer memory, while others argue that if tested properly, they have a substantial impact. The current research addresses these mixed results by relying on an accessibility/diagnosticity framework to explore the effect of emotions on consumer implicit and explicit memory. Explicit memory performance is characterized as relying upon both the accessibility of memory traces and their relative diagnosticity in contrast with other inputs. In contrast, implicit memory performance is primarily driven by accessibility...
