There a Muslim lady refused to drink water touched by a Christian. This led to a discussion on the religious beliefs of two communities. Following this, a number of hot exchanges took place between her and the Muslim women. After 8 days, Qari Muhammad Salim, a local maulvi, using three Muslim women as witnesses, lodged an FIR against her that she has committed Blasphemy. She was arrested on this basis. Qari Salim, told a CNN reporter that “Her death sentence was one of the happiest moments of his life. Tears of joy poured from my eyes". The opinions of public have been divided on Aasia’s case. Some believes that she has actually committed blasphemy by insulting the Prophet. While some believes that the case was filed under pressure from influential local people, and is based on settling personal scores. She does not live life by her terms, instead she lives life according to what society deems appropriate. Calixta is introduced in the setting of her small two-room house sitting by a window, sewing. She is so engrossed in her sewing that she does not notice the approaching storm. Her husband Bobinôt and four-year old son Bibi have gone out, on foot, for food and are at Friedheimer’s store when the storm arrives. They decide to wait out the storm there. Calixta appears to have an apathetic attitude toward Bobinôt and Bibi being out. Chopin illustrates Calixta's seeming indifference in the following passage, “Calixta, at home, felt no uneasiness for their safety. She sat at a side window sewing furiously on a sewing machine. She was greatly occupied and did not notice the approaching storm” (109). Unlike the narrator of The Third and Final Continent or even Lilia’s parents, Mrs. Sen finds it impossible to integrate into her new country. Her refusal to learn how to drive is the culmination of her distress. Her frustration is voiced loudly only to Eliot, who is dealing with his own distress. There is a childish, tantrum-like angle to Mrs. Sen’s complaints. She even remarks to Eliot that he is much wise than she was at that age; she never thought for a moment that she would be separated from her family. While the reader sympathizes with her plight, her stubbornness seems greater than it need be. Her husband tries to accommodate her, the policeman does not arrest or fine her for the accident, and the workers at the fishmarket put product on hold for her. In the end, it is Mrs. Sen’s responsibility to make an effort. Unlike Mala in The Third and Final Continent – who was equally distraught about leaving her family – Mrs. Sen does not try to adjust. She is trapped in a cage of her own making. As in Sexy, the main characters have mirror images within the story. Here, Eliot and Mrs. Sen are quite similar. He is trapped in his life as well.
