Texts from the Bible stand at the center of analysis, while accompanying textbooks help us to contexualize biblical materials within history. Each week revolves around a particular theme with one lecture on the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and one on the New Testament. Themes include creation, birth, the hero, the mountain, the community, the Temple, suffering, and the end of time. As we place biblical texts in their historical contexts, we will consider the Bible as a literary work with distinct genres, themes and conventions. The thematic connections between the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament will be explored at the same time that differences in their style and message are investigated. While reading the Bible, we will develop a vocabulary for discussing literary texts as well as a vocabulary specific to texts from the ancient world. ...Your Task Chapter 1 — “Understand the Life-changing Power of Preaching” • If the church is unhealthy, it is the result (at least in part), of unhealthy preaching. “Though the church may be enhanced by a few creative, well-placed amenities, be assured that she cannot survive without the consistent, accurate, and authoritative preaching that intends, in every instance, to transform its hearers.” [p. 5; my emphasis (unless otherwise noted, all italicized comments are Fabarez’ emphasis, not mine).] • The NT uses three primary word families to denote the importance of preaching: khrussw, aggellw, didaskw. They all point to the authoritative, life-changing message that the teacher and preacher are empowered to deliver to God’s people. This was the expectation of Paul (cf. 2 Tim. 4:2; 1 Tim. 1:3; Eph. 4:1). ...I. Introduction Over the course of the last few weeks, this theology class has discussed several topics that have been very helpful, insightful and eye opening in my Christian walk. I have learned many new things and have gone deeper in my understanding of the things I already knew. In this paper, I would like to discuss three topics that I found to be the most interesting: * Why are personal testimonies important in sharing the gospel? * If a person is a Christian, does it matter how they live their life? * What can your local church do to better communicate God’s love to your community? The Bible has all the answers. We must study this awesome book to find the answers to the very questions we ask. II. Personal Testimonies Personal testimonies are important in sharing the gospel because they tell what God is doing in people’s lives. Sharing the gospel is a way of sharing God’s good works and a way of meeting people where they are, to try to help them. People can read the Bible, have questions, and seek guidance from others, preferably more mature Christians; however, sometimes the Bible in general is hard to relate to until we hear statements from someone we know and trust. “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19-20, TNIV). Defined as or the belief that “The work of Jesus is ontologically necessary for salvation (in other words no one would be saved without it) Nash indicates not epistemologically necessary (in other words a person need not be aware of the work in order to benefit from it).” [1] One must keep in mind that Exclusivism is in disagreement with any second proposition. Strength of his Argument As you read through Nash’s work you find that Nash quotes a number of Inclusivists extensively. He also notes that one has sufficient evidence of their view points and the many arguments made by their own writings. This author displays great integrity in that he identifies even the elements of disagreement between inclusivists. Those of the Inclusivists thought believe that a general revelation is sufficient to bring an individual unto salvation. As Nash began to look into scripture he found Romans chapters 1-3 supported his ideology that a person’s broad revelation is not quite sufficient for the salvation of the person in question. Further supported by the quote Nash used from Bruce Demarest. Stating “Nash is correct to say that “Paul’s teaching that no human being succeeds in living up to the light of general revelation implies that general revelation cannot save; special revelation is required for that result.”[2] That’s possibly...

The point of the parable seems to be that if one is persistent in asking something of a friend, even when it's very inconvenient, one's petitions will be answered. How much more will one be blessed, then, if one is persistent in praying to God, our heavenly Parent?iv John Steinbeck's short novel Of Mice and Men is all about friendship in the middle of the night -- that is, under very difficult circumstances of rural poverty during the Depression. Following my sermonic theme of the last couple of weeks -- not only loving God with all of one's heart, mind and soul but also loving one's neighbor as oneself -- I'd like to explore Steinbeck's understanding of friendship with you this morning. Ultimately, I hope it will illuminate what it means existentially to knock at the door and then have it opened unto us.
