Team Effort: the Communities Created Through Sports

...Hayden Liljenquist ENG 102 Dr. Pegram July 31, 2012 Team Effort: The Communities Created Through Sports Introduction Within today’s society, a number of small, unique communities exist. Communities can range from social, to religious, to occupational. In order to be considered a separate and distinct “community,” the group needs to share common characteristics or interests and be perceived as distinct from the larger society as a whole. Sports teams provide a particularly good example of a community. They separate themselves by the games they play, even by the name they call themselves. The entire world of sports itself can seem confusing to someone who doesn’t understand the rules. Behind each game is a complex realm of jargon, hierarchy, and guidelines. In order to play, you need to learn. And hopeful members work to earn their spot on the team. Through personal participation, as well as observation, one can witness for themselves just how the community created by a team functions. The team experience resonates with a lot of people, and has attracted film makers with stories of motivation, hope, and overcoming the odds. Many of the most well-known sports movies are often even inspired by true stories. In all of these films, similar themes can be found, demonstrating just how much the feeling of community within teams is shared throughout all areas of sports. Teams have a goal, face a challenger, and overcome obstacles, all in the hope of...

Projectile Motion

...Experiment 4 Projectile Motion Introduction We examined projectile motion by observing a ball rolling down then leaving the ramp, thus becoming a projectile with a horizontal initial velocity. We measured the horizontal initial velocity using the photogate and computer. We measured the horizontal and vertical distances that the projectile traveled from the end of the ramp to when it hit the floor my using a meter stick to measure Experimental Set-Up In our experiment, we used the following: ramp, photogate, steal ball, plumb bob, meter stick, and vernier caliper. Experimental Procedure 1.At the edge of our lab table, we prepared the ramp. 2.Exactly below the launch point, we marked a point on the floor by using the plumb bob. 3.We determined the vertical distance that the ball fell (mm) from when it was launched from the ramp and fell on the floor. We then entered this in our data table. 4.We positioned a piece of paper on the floor to where the ball would land. We put the carbon paper above the paper and taped them to the floor. 5.We fixed the photogate so the ball rolled out and the light beam was blocked and unblocked. The photogate was plugged into the LabPro Dig/Sonic1 port. 6.We opened up the One Gate Timing from the Logger Pro folder. 7.We measured the diameter of the ball with the vernier caliper and recorded it in the computer so that it could calculate the ball’s launch velocity. 8.We launched the ball from a specific height from the ramp so that the ball...

Famous Personality

...The character I have chosen is Holly Golightly, from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. This has been my all time favorite movie. In the movie, Audrey Hepburn plays a female character that is very spontaneous and spunky. I feel that throughout the movie she shows to be an extraversion. She meets a neighbor who is amazed how she talks and lives her life. She throws a party in her apartment and is very sociable and seems to be star of the show. Holly comes off to other people as very friendly and affectionate. Throughout the movie, the neighbor “Fred” finds out that deep down she has a lot of problems. He finds her to be in the neuroticism category. She is nervous about her past and she is insecure of herself. Holly feels the need to sneak up to her neighbor’s apartment because she is lonely. As soon as he asks her why she is crying, she becomes high strung and a bit upset. Holly and “Fred” go out into New York City and have a fun day together. They pick original things for them to do and some are creative. At this point in the movie I feel as though she falls into the openness to experience category. She has a great imagination in which “Fred” points out and is attracted to. Towards the end of the movie, Holly’s former husband comes to find her. When she finds out he is in New York, she becomes nervous again. I feel as though at this point she is in the agreeableness category. She agrees to go back with him and is forgiving. She seems to be soft hearted to her former husband. Then...
