WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 1

A. Short Answer Questions

1. Discuss a specific computerized information system.

A Local Area Network is a specific computerized information system. It usually consists of clients which would be desktops or laptops connecting to servers for authentication and file management. The physical network would consist of routers and switches. Voice Communications can be part of the information system as a whole as well.

2. What are some of the systems development methodologies used by specific corporations?

The methodologies that could be used by specific corporations could be either a Centralized data processing system or a distributed data processing system. In a centralized system the processing of computing is centralized and data retrieval is already done for them. A distributed system has multiple computers housed in remote branches. Another methodology used could be the client/server concept.

3. What steps would you take to align the IS functions of an organization with its organization's goals?

I would first have a company meeting with all department heads. Collectively together I would gather what is the most important function they would need to be incorporated into the information system. Then I would have separate meetings with each dept. head to get a more specific handle of how much they have to spend on IS equipment for their dept.

4. Should technology drive an organization's strategic planning or should strategic planning drive an organization's technology adoption plans?

Strategic Planning should drive an organization’s technology plans because for the organization to be successful choices need to be unique and different in activities for the business to thrive. This way then the Technology can be adopted to intertwine into the companies vision of where they would like to go an what needs to be achieved in the future for growth.

Pick a company that operates globally and use the Internet and any other available source to gather information on the company. Based on your research, write a 1–2 page paper describing some of the possible benefits that the company might have gained by operating globally. Also, describe challenges that the company has faced or is currently facing as a result of operating in a global society. Be sure to cite all sources. I choose United Parcel Service because it is world renowned Fortune 500 Company that started out locally as a messenger service and turned into a 400,000 employee global giant company that is still running strong today. UPS gained a worldwide prestige from operating globally. There global benefits enable them to optimally stage their entire inventory which speeds their transit and lowers transportation costs. Their products are received at the right place and on time. They can serve customers of any size to exact specifications anywhere in the world. UPS air freight is one facet of their global operation. UPS is twenty percent more productive and produces greater job growth rather than being a non exporter. Also they are nine percent more likely to stay financially solvent being global. In 2008 UPS opened a new international hub in Shanghai, China. The Shanghai location provided there operations of heavy freight and express shipments to be further expedited on a global basis. UPS Shipment Tracking Technology Globally improves their capacity management overall. UPS IS systems enable tracking globally. This is where they have an experienced IT team consisting of Web Developers, System Programmers, Network Engineers, Admins, and Help Desk Support to manage and maintain there vast outreach globally on the World Wide Web. UPS demands to maintain the global technological advantage for shipment tracking. The challenges UPS face is their customer service level must be the same all over. Their operation in Turkey has horrible roads, but they try to compensate the customer directly at their airports. By having an expanded role globally challenges UPS to have managers that are proficient in recruiting, hiring and developing talent. UPS Communications must maintain in several different languages to operate globally. UPS usually encounters transportation capacity constraints and security since airports rely heavily on security in today’s society. UPS has to also follow by different government policies and regulations when transporting freight globally. Some regulations could include carrier pricing, service restrictions for equipment operators, local noise policies that would affect aircraft landings and departures at night.

Hrm in Israel

...The transition from a Socialist approach to a free market approach and the rise of a new high-tech sector are two remarkable shifts that have occurred in the last two decades in Israel. In the face of these changes, human resource (HR) practitioners are currently expected to assume new roles, adopt different work values, and apply appropriate strategies. HR managers in the low-tech industry still adhere to traditional values and strategies, including a reliance on trade unions and an emphasis on job security and the employees’ years of work experience and seniority as key criteria for promotion. In the emerging high-tech sector, HR managers have adopted new values and developed new strategies, including human resource management programs, employee empowerment, higher salaries and better benefits, while placing an emphasis on employees’ talents and qualifications. The Art of High-Technology Management

...The paper is mainly about the management of the high-tech companies in a successful way. The article is written as the result of a research that exceeds two decades which consists of surveys and interviews with several CEOs and executives from different high-tech industries and different-sized firms. In the article the authors define six key headings for a successful management of high-tech companies. After explaining all, they also put these topics in two groups which are paradoxical. The themes mentioned in the article which are “business focus”, “organizational cohesion” and “sense of integrity” represent the static and stable side of the paradox. On the other hand “adaptability”, “entrepreneurial culture” and “hands-on top management” are dynamic and changing side of the paradox. Six themes of the successful high-tech management that are mentioned in the article: Business Focus: To succeed as a technology firm, companies should focus their attention on production lines, R&D stage and business priorities. Instead of making effort for irrelevant and wide product portfolio, they should concentrate on well-known and well-done products, areas or trying to create new product lines or business opportunities which are related to these. For the technological leadership of the companies, R&D expenses also should be enduring in a few areas instead of being in many areas and discontinuous. Adaptability: A high technology company should be able to adapt and lead the rapid changes...

Smartix Evaluation

...Smartix Case HBS Smartix 1. Imagine that you are Vivek Khuller. Should you accept the offer from MSG? I don’t believe that I would take the offer from MSG. Here’s the problem with not taking the deal: Accel is relying on the MSG deal far greater than anticipated, and the deal with Accel has a high probability of falling through once it is discovered MSG may not be participating in the way Accel is anticipating. The other issue at hand is that without the Accel deal, Smartix is nearly out of time and the funds required to continue aggressively pursuing the project. An alternative for Smartix in this situation is to scale it back and seek out a slightly smaller deal. They have the capacity to do so and it seems that they were aiming rather ambitiously with MSG. If they wanted to reassess their end game and dial it down some, they have the opportunity to connect with a slightly smaller venue or company and they have a short amount of time to do so. Another alternative to accepting the MSG deal is for the founders to gain outside employment in an effort to sustain themselves while they regroup Smartix to succeed under their terms. They all know that the last thing they want to do after all their hard work is become MSG employees. In the end, don’t accept a subpar deal if you know your venture is worth more. 2. Should Vivek have tried to start this venture without co-founders? Could he have been a solo founder? While not doubting his competence or his ability to...

These organizations are having to step out of the box and go the extra length to ensure they are able to acquire the savvy tech from an early stage. Using tools outside of the normal resume check alongside the educational background, these Companies are able to now “catch them young” by scouting for qualified candidates with needed skills, and recruiting them from colleges instead of waiting till they have completely finished their degree. For instance IBM has made use of its famous Watson computer in certain top schools giving students a chance to challenge the computer. The outcome of these approach will help IBM to narrow down which students to consider and they will work towards luring such students to consider a career at IBM (Robins 2013). As the competition is quite high in this industry, business always have to be creative in their search for talents, be on their toes and pull out all stops in trying to convince potential candidates to choose them instead of their competitors. While some are still struggling to come up with various approach to help them acquire more qualified candidate, the race is still on for the rest in trying to get...
