Biomass is a term for all organic material that stems from plants (including algae, trees and crops). Biomass is produced by green plants converting carbon dioxide using light into plant material through photosynthesis and includes all land- and waterbased vegetation, as well as all organic wastes. The biomass resource can be considered as organic matter, in which the energy of sunlight is stored in chemical bonds. When the bonds between adjacent carbon, hydrogen and oxygen molecules are broken by digestion, combustion, or decomposition, these substances release their stored chemical energy (Mckendry, 2002).
Biomass has always been a major source of energy for mankind and is presently estimated to contribute of the order 10– 14% of the world’s …show more content…
The following criteria lead to an improvement in enzymatic hydrolysis of lignocellulosic material such as increasing of the surface area and porosity, modification of lignin structure, removal of lignin, depolymerization of hemicellulose, removal of hemicellulose and reducing the crystallinity of cellulose. In an ideal case the pretreatment employed leads to a limited formation of degradation products that inhibit enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation, and is also high cost effective (Eggeman and Elander, 2005).
Therefore, dilute acid pretreatment (physico-chemical pretreatment) is proposed in this research as a suitable method to obtain maximum result of lignocellulosic without effect the cost. The aim of pretreatment process is to change these properties for preparing materials of enzymatic degradation to obtain the optimum results of sugars, cellulose hemicellulose and lignin content in the OPF.

Pretreatment process by physical, chemical and biological is one of the main processes in ethanol production process from lignocelluloses (Taherzadeh et al.,
2008). This pretreatment is needed to produce macroscopic and microscopic biomass structure for fast and efficient hydrolysis to fermentable sugars (Mosier et al., 2005).
Pretreatment can effect bio-digestibility of waste for ethanol production and increase enzyme accessibility into material. Pretreatment process also aims to break lignin and hemicellulose bonding and crystal structure to be simple sugar compound (Sun and
Cheng, 2002).
Only a small number of pretreatment methods has been reported as being potentially cost-effective thus far. These include steam explosion, hot water, concentrated acid hydrolysis and dilute acid pretreatments. It is not possible to define the best pretreatment method as it depends on many factors such as type of lignocellulosic biomass and desired products.
