Feasibility of Two Fresh Water Supply Techniques in Sudan

...development is considered, water is at the top of the list of priorities (Omer, 2008). The value of water is increasingly felt in areas such as Sudan, where precipitation is inadequate while temperatures are high resulting in dry or arid conditions (Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), cited in USAID, 2010). Two-thirds of the country is arid and rainfall is less than 400mm annually. Regardless of the fact that about 60% of Sudan lies within the Nile basin, it only draws 18.5x109 m3 from the Nile’s annual flow of 84x109m3 and added to its internal supply of 12x109m3, the water availability falls considerably below the water stress limit of 1000m3 per head (ibid). According to FAO, (cited in USAID, 2010), in Sudan the renewable water resource per capita at 2008 stood at 726m3/person/year and is projected to be 617m3/person/year in 2015. It is low and rapidly dropping every year (ibid) and unless measures are taken, many citizens will be living without a basic human right. Since Sudan cannot rely on rainfall which is sporadic and concentrated in 4 months for most areas (Omer, 2008), water management techniques need to be implemented to ensure availability of potable water. Sudan is bordered by the Red Sea to the east which makes desalination a viable option but the cost implications and negative effects on the environment make it unattractive. Another option worth considering is water recycling which seems to be lower in cost while having fewer negative effects on the environment...

Harvard Case 3 the Fashion Channel Solution

...CHAPTER 9 PROJECT FINANCE AND CONTRACT PRICING In the previous chapters, techniques for project planning, scheduling, resources management, and time-cost trade off have been introduced. This chapter will deal with project cash flow to predict the actual flow of money during the contract duration. Also, this chapter will introduce the means for finalizing a contract price. A project's cash flow is basically the difference between the project's income and its expense. The difference between a company's total income and its total expense over a period of time is the company cash flow. 9.1 Contract Cash Flow At the project level, a project’s cash flow is the difference between the project’s expense and income. At the construction company level, the difference between company’s total expense and its total income over a period of time is the company’s cash flow. Cash flow = Cash in – Cash out = Income - Expense Forecasting cash flow is necessary for a construction company for the following reasons: To ensure that sufficient cash is available to meet the demands. It shows the contractor the maximum amount of cash required and when it will be required. Thus, the contractor can made arrangements to secure the required cash. It provides a reliable indicator to lending institutions that loans made can be repaid according to an agreed program. It ensures that cash resources are fully utilized to the benefit of the owner and investors in the company. Construction Management 182 Dr...

...Journal of Banking & Finance 27 (2003) 1297–1321 www.elsevier.com/locate/econbase Corporate governance, dividend payout policy, and the interrelation between dividends, R&D, and capital investment Klaus Gugler * Department of Economics, University of Vienna, WP No. 9803, Br€nnerstrasse 72, 1210 Vienna, Austria u Received 12 October 2000; accepted 5 November 2001 Abstract This paper investigates the relationship between dividends and the ownership and control structure of the firm. For a panel of Austrian firms over the 1991/99 period, we find that statecontrolled firms engage in dividend smoothing, while family-controlled firms do not. The latter choose significantly lower target payout levels. Consistently, state-controlled firms are most reluctant and family-controlled firms are least reluctant to cut dividends when cuts are warranted. The dividend behavior of bank- and foreign-controlled firms lies in between stateand family-controlled firms. This is consistent with the expected ‘‘ranking’’ of information asymmetries and managerial agency costs. The above results hold for firms with good investment opportunities. We find that firms with low growth opportunities optimally disgorge cash irrespective of who controls the firm. Ó 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. The persistence in many advanced countries of large fiscal deficits and the prospect of high public debt/GDP ratios for many years is likely, at some point, to create policy dilemmas not only for central banks but also for public debt managers. Some countries have already had to cope with higher...

Financial Intermediation

...Abstract Financial intermediation is an important activity in the economy because it allows funds to be channeled from people who might otherwise not put them to productive use to people who will ultimately put the funds to productive uses. In line with the assumption that banking sector plays an important role in financing the investment projects, successive governments in Nigeria have carried out reforms and institutional innovations in the banking sector. The overall intention of these reforms has been to ensure financial stability so as to influence the growth of the economy and also enhance banks to play a critical role of financial intermediation in Nigeria. However, despite the fact that Nigerian banks have undergone series of restructuring/reforms aimed at strengthening the banks’ ability to efficient service delivery and fund the real sector, problems such as; inefficiency in allocating funds to the real sector, lack of long-dated funding, neglect of the core private sector in terms of credit extension, weak capacity of the banks to fund the real sector, low-level activities of banks, and illiquidity still lingers. This study therefore, examines empirically the impact of financial intermediation on the development of the Nigerian economy with the aim of determining the importance of financial intermediaries and its influence. This study found out that the financial intermediaries (banks) in Nigeria exhibit inefficiency and weak capacity in the allocation of funds to...

Debt Mangement

...Interactions between sovereign debt management and monetary policy under fiscal dominance and financial instability Hans J Blommestein and Philip Turner1 Abstract Serious fiscal vulnerabilities arising from many years of high government/GDP ratios have created new and complex interactions between public debt management and monetary policy. Although their formal mandates have not changed, recent balance sheet policies of many central banks have tended to blur the separation of their policies from fiscal policy. The mandates of debt management offices have usually had a microeconomic focus (viz, minimising longer-term borrowing costs, while limiting refunding risks). Such mandates have usually avoided any explicit macroeconomic policy dimension but some major policy overlaps are latent. What is needed is a policy framework for all official actions that affect the maturity structure of government debt in the hands of the public. This requires more analysis of the macroeconomics of government debt management. A full debate about the allocation of functional responsibilities would have to take account not only of the economics, but also of political and institutional constraints. There are operational advantages in having in place appropriate governance arrangements that serve to forestall short-sighted policies and hold specific institutions accountable for their mandates. Securitisation

...text and inclusion in the reference list Word Count: 14,650 words ABSTRACT This thesis analyses the main reason why banks securitise their loans including bank liquidity, credit risk transfer, regulatory capital arbitrage and bank performance in a comparison between UK securitising bank and non-securitising banks during the period from 2000 to 2010, and analysing a case study of Northern Rock bank, a fifth biggest volume securitising bank in the UK from 2001 to 2007 (Goldsmith- Pinkham and Yorulmazer, 2010) with Lloyds TSB, a stable bank with less securitisation. First, this dissertation will contribute to major literature on the securitisation background and determinants of securitisation. Next, the data, methodology and four groups of variables contributing to bank‟s securitisation decisions, namely liquidity needs, credit risk transfer, regulatory capital arbitrage and efficiency will be described using a logistic regression model adopting from Cardone-Riportella et al. (2010). Finally, the comparisons between securitising banks and non-securitising banks in general and between Northern Rock and Lloyds TSB in particular are analysed based on four above proxies. The empirical results in this study demonstrate that the needs for liquidity and regulatory capital...
