The history of Black Friday actually begins with kick off of The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, created in 1924. This event ushers in the Holiday shopping season that begins on the Friday after Thanksgiving.

Taking a closer look...

Let's turn the calendar back to 1939, when the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt, moved Thanksgiving back a week to offer retailers more time to sell their products and experience a financial upturn. As the change was announced in October, Roosevelt's plan created a bit of confusion among the public. Consequently, many Americans celebrated the Holiday in its original time and in fact, even ridiculed Roosevelt's Holiday changes by referring to the day as "Franksgiving. " Despite the difficulties

Macys Game Theory

...In 2011, Toys “R” Us, decided to begin the competition of Black Friday earlier by opening its doors on Thanksgiving night. The following year other stores including: Target, Lord & Taylor, and Hudson Bay Co. followed in suit by opening its doors on Thanksgiving. Macy’s now had the dilemma on their hands on what strategy they should do going forward. In order to determine their actions they implemented game theory in order to make the best possible decision. If Macy’s was to remain closed on Thanksgiving they would not only lose customers to other retailers on Thanksgiving, but they would also lose foot traffic on Black Friday as well. On the other hand if they were to open they would be able to grab a portion of retailers on the Thanksgiving, and Black Friday shoppers would have a greater experience with fewer crowds to contend with. Also with being opened on Thanksgiving, it would create the much need hype to attract customers towards Macy’s, since most Black Friday shoppers are usually attracted more towards the electronic stores. With implementing the strategy of opening its doors on Thanksgiving, Macy’s once again is staying competitive amongst all other retailers. The war on Black Friday still isn’t over, and Macy’s will need to continue to determine what they need to do to win even if it means starting theirs sales even earlier than Thanksgiving. Using game theory was the best way for Macy’s to determine what actions they needed to take. This way they were able...

Early Openning on Thanksgiving

...Exam for Thursday Thanksgiving Day, which is always the fourth Thursday in November in the United States, is a week from today (today is Nov. 15, 2012; Thanksgiving Day is Nov. 22 this year). The day after Thanksgiving Day is called “Black Friday” in the business world. “Black Friday” is the unofficial beginning of the Christmas and Hanukkah shopping season. The word “black” in “Black Friday” is an accounting term meaning “profit.” Businesses that have been operating “in the red” prior to Thanksgiving Day will hopefully be “in the black” as a result of all the shopping and buying that people do during the holiday (Christmas and Hanukkah) season. Until about ten years ago, stores would open on Black Friday at their usual time (9:00 am or whenever). There would be a long line of people waiting to get in, as most people have the day off on Black Friday and want to begin their Christmas shopping or Hanukkah shopping that day or soon thereafter. Beginning about ten years ago, retail stores began to open earlier and earlier on Black Friday in order to gain an advantage over competitors who opened at 9:00 am. Stores began opening at 6:00 am on Black Friday, then, a few years later, would open at 4:00 am on Black Friday. Some began opening at midnight (12:01 am) on Black Friday. The retail chain Target Stores announced that this year (2012) their stores will open at 9:00 pm on Thanksgiving Day (Thurs., Nov 22). Their stores will be closed on Thanksgiving Day until9:00 pm, then will...

Black Friday: the People and the Craze

...Black Friday: The People and the Craze Kevin Leonel Sonilal COM/156: University Composition and Communication March 16th, 2013 Professor Karen Nowak It is in our human nature to desire goods whether it is for necessity or luxury. Our appetite for shopping dates back hundreds of years to the bazaars and markets of old times. Over the years, our fascination with shopping has increased and evolved. There are more smart and sales-conscious shoppers. As a result, the markets and vendors have evolved in order to accommodate the evolved shopper. It has resulted in the creation of mass markets, industrialization, and cultural attitudes. With the increasing amount of shoppers, and countless markets and vendors, companies are competing to gain shopper interest; they invent new products, create persuasive advertising, and offer sales on current merchandise. For companies, their largest revenue gain comes around the holidays. Therefore, they make big pushes for consumer sales on those designated days. However, a large portion of their revenue comes from one non-holiday, the man-made holiday, Black Friday. On this day, consumers spend more time and money in preparation than they do on their goods. There is a significant change in their attitudes and behavior; they become more competitive and more aggressive. This single day affects both producers and consumers. The combination of aggressive shoppers, sales, and limited quantities can be a recipe for chaos and disaster...

...The geography of the UK. The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles in the north west of Europe and is separated from the mainland by the English Channel and the Strait of Dover. Also the country is washed by the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The coastline is deeply indented and it gives a good supply of splendid harbours for ships. In the north you can find the Cheviots separating England from Scotland, the Pennines going down England like a backbone and the Cambrian Mountains which occupy the greatest part of Wales. The highest peak is Ben Nevis which is situated in the Highlands of Scotland. The south-eastern part of England is a low-lying land with gentle hills and a coast which is regular in outline with occasional chalk cliffs. The rivers in Britain are of little value as waterways. The longest are the Severn, the Thames, the Clyde and the Bristol Avon. There are a lot of lakes in the UK for example in the Lake District in the northern part of England but the most famous lake is Loch Ness in Scotland. Great Britain is rich in coal, iron ore and oil. Such crops as wheat, sugar-beet, potatoes and others are grown in this country. The main cities are London, Bristol, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Cardiff and Belfast. The geography of the USA. Warehouse Wage Slave Reading Review

...worked for Amalgamated. "But look at it from their perspective. They need you to work as fast as possible to push out as much as they can as fast as they can. So they're gonna give you goals, and then you know what? If you make those goals, they're gonna increase the goals. But they'll be yelling at you all the time. It's like the military. They have to break you down so they can turn you into what they want you to be. So they're going to tell you, 'You're not good enough, you're not good enough, you're not good enough,' to make you work harder. Don't say, 'This is the best I can do.' Say, 'I'll try,' even if you know you can't do it. Because if you say, 'This is the best I can do,' they'll let you go. They hire and fire constantly, every day. You'll see people dropping all around you. But don't take it personally and break down or start crying when they yell at you." Several months prior, I'd reported on an Ohio warehouse [2] where workers shipped products for online retailers under conditions that were surprisingly demoralizing and dehumanizing, even to someone who's spent a lot of time working in warehouses, which I have. And then my editors sat me down. "We want you to go work for Amalgamated Product Giant Shipping Worldwide Inc.," they said. I'd have to give my real...
