Did you ever wonder what it was like for a white man to be black in the South during the end of the 1950’s? A procedure to darken the skin was possible and was done in 1959. In Black Like Me, by John Howard Griffin, he explains and identifies how African Americans are treated differently and harshly due solely to the color of skin, by changing his own skin color to that of a black man. This book was written to provide America with hands-on experience of the daily life of a black man and help provide a possible solution to help America with the race problem. The role of race and skin color has a big impact on the community and way of life in Black Like Me. John Howard Griffin traveled throughout the South during the months of 1959 and leading into 1960 for an original purpose of scientific research study of African Americans but it soon changed to allowing America to know of his experience living as a black man.John Howard Griffin questioned, “if a white man became a Negro in the Deep South, what adjustments would he have to make? What is it like to experience discrimination based on skin color, something over which no one has no control?” These questions are the foundations for the purpose of Black Like Me. He believed to understand or learn the truth, a white man had to become an African American. John Howard Griffin will have traveled to New Orleans, Louisiana, Hattiesburg, Mississippi, Tuskegee, Alabama, and Atlanta, Georgia, during his research. As Mr. Griffin went through the South, he experienced different reactions from different people of different races upon transitioning from white to black. John Howard Griffin’s first visit was in New Orleans, Louisiana. As a white man, he describes how beautiful and superb New Orleans was and noted how

...sensible, worthy and truly humane. Precious Jones, the teenage protagonist, suffers unbelievable adversities for her young age — raped by her father (when she was only seven years old), ill-treated and badly beaten by her mother. At the start of the novel, Precious Jones is pregnant for the second time with her father's child. She says, “Don’t nobody want me. Don't nobody need me. I know who I am...ugly black grease to be wipe away, punish, kilt, changed, finded a job for"(p. 33). This obviously shows how much has she hates herself. Precious believes her life would be different if she were a white girl. She thinks white girls have all imaginable happiness a girl could possibly have. Precious realizes her physical appearance made people to mistreat her. Even if she sits obediently in class every day, she experiences-"I always did like school, jus' seem school never did like me"[(p. 38). In fact the school principal tells her teacher to renounce her, saying "Focus on the ones who can learn"(p. 39). She realizes at some point that "The tesses paint a picture of me wif no brain," "The tesses paint a picture of me an' my muver-my whole family, we more than dumb, we invisible" (p. 33). She despises the world that makes her and her family “invisible”—as if they don’t exist –dumb brainless creatures, a race much despised, whose identity lies only in so far as they are prejudice....

Review

...Review Of the Movie “The Help” “The Help”, it is a movie based on the book which contain testimonials on the experiences of African-American maids. I remembered I read the book before I watched the movie. The thing I know about the book, it was written and published by a white woman and it was told by the black women who were maids in the 1960s. It gave me some assumptions to go with. Before I start, everything that I will bring up are tightly about the movie and the book. It is like a little summary however the reviews I read are really good concerning the movie and the book. The movie was produced in a small town Jackson, Mississippi. Racial tension was so high at that time. The Black women worked not only as maids in that town, but they practically raised white people’s children too. So far, they were seen as “HELP” and were treated inappropriately and poorly. Skeeter, is a young woman who were living in that town. She gets the idea to write a story about these women who were maids, because of her good experience with the black woman who raised her and took really good care of her when her mother was not around. I really liked and enjoyed this movie. It got my attention and made me cry couple of times while watching some parts. What was so interesting and good about this movie? At the beginning of the movie, the acting was excellent. Viola Davis who played a maid named (Aibileen), she is an amazing woman who was one of the central characters in the movie...

Research Paper - Tory Burch

...Consumer Reviews for the ‘Tory Burch Reva Ballet Flat’ ◦ Summary Analysis. To get a better understanding of how consumers view the Tory Burch Reva Flat, I went to Amazon.com marketplace and type in the Tory Burch Reva Ballet flat. I choose to look at Amazon reviews because I find them to be honest and you can generally tell when there is a paid review listed. So I gathered four of the most recent reviews and they display an array of opinions. In looking at the reviews, the three disadvantages listed are the size of the shoe, people are suggesting to get the shoe a half size or a full size up so that they will fit more comfortable as their were issues with the width of the shoe and the heel rubbing on the shoe as well as the toe box being too tight due to the logo ornanment on the toe. Another disadvantage of the shoe was the comfort of the shoe, once people purchased a comfortable style their were complaints about not being able to wear them all day long becauase of the flatness and lack of support of the shoe. Lastly the availablitly of various styles, people want a certain style of this shoe, weather it’s the simple classic black ballet flat or, the matta logo, or a certain color, people search for the certain style/color combination that they perfer in this shoe. The common advantages found amongst the consumers in these reviews are, the style, regardless of any discomfort or price, people are willing to wear and purchase this shoe at varioius price...

The Critics Corner

...first time in the American cinema, the very process of telling a story on film became every bit as tricky and exhilarating as the story itself”, said columnist Owen Gleiberman. (Gleiberman, 1991) Certainly agree with the columnist here the story itself although to me took a moment to unfold at the end became a lot more plain for the viewers. Citizen Kane proved to be a slightly difficult movie to watch not because the acting was horrible or the movie production was awful but more because it was not what I was accustomed to. The movie started a little slow with the introduction of the main character in what almost seemed like a very early slide show. The takeaway from the movie as opposed to what Mr. Ebert stated in his review I believe is to see how far we have come as a movie going and producing society. The movie was a masterpiece of its time however without the help of Mr. Ebert’s review I believe that I would have lost some of the brilliance of the movie. Movie 2 was “Casablanca” this movie has been talked about since I was a little tike and it did not disappoint. I would like to start by saying that I do not normally seek out black and white films so two pictures in a row that were black and white had me wanting...

Book Review on the Autobiography Malcolm X

...NANA KONADU DARKO-MENSAH TITLE: THE BLACK PANTHER LEADERSHIP 3 SEMINAR: The Political Economy of Leadership and National Transformation LECTURER: DR. LLOYD AMOAH BOOK REVIEW ON THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY MALCOLM X DUE: 27TH APRIL 2011 . "By any means necessary. I'm for freedom. I 'm for a society in which our people are recognized and respected as human beings, and I believe that we have the right to resort to any means necessary to bring that about." -Malcolm X.  ABSTRACT As part of the leadership seminar requirements, I was supposed to choose a book from the assigned books to review. This paper seeks to successfully review the leadership approach of Malcolm X. It highlights the main themes of the book and states the arguments of agreement and disagreement with the author. It also seeks to construct the portrait of leadership style of Malcolm X, discusses his strengths and weaknesses. In addition, lessons and personal insights I discovered during my course of reading are included in the review. I chose to review the autobiography of Malcolm X because he was unique revolutionary. He was not afraid to say things that needed to be heard. Also through him, many African Americans were able to stand together and fight for their rights. Another inspiring reason is the fact he continued his struggle for equality despite the numerous death threats on his life and his family. This quality of selflessness, the concern for the welfare of others I believe is essential for leaders to have....

Ethnic Notions Film Analysis

...Notions reviews the evolution of white America’s perception of African Americans. The title Ethnic Notions can be defined as, a conception or belief of a particular race of people. In a more in-depth manner, the tile can be defined as, a conception or belief of what white America thought about African Americans. Ethnic Notion’s definition provides a general summary of what this documentary is about. I believe the significance of the title upholds the belief that everyone does not look at African Americans the way some white Americans have perceived them to be. This movie gives me the impression as if white American thought of African Americans as fools or even just...

Zora Neal Hurston vs. Richard Wright

...commenting on Claude Monet’s works of impressionism likely evokes phrases such as ‘stylistic misunderstanding’ and ‘representational disdain.’ Both Claude Monet and Edgar Degas actively sought to achieve some level of worldly representation through their works. They achieved this representation through vastly different methods and fundamentally different brushstrokes. As brushstrokes are to the canvas of the painter, diction is to the pages of an author’s work. The stark and frequently unadulterated realism that Richard Wright, one of the major novelists to emerge from the Harlem Renaissance, is known for, is often contrasted to his contemporary and rival, Zora Neale Hurston’s, more socially appealing racial and human sensuality. Much like Monet and Degas, who aimed to achieve some level of inspiration through their art, Hurston and Wright both actively sought to expand the minds of their audience through socially provoking writing. While no record of contemporary criticism is in existence between Monet and Degas, the same cannot be said for Hurston and Wright. Both authors were passionate about their own methods and styles and rarely shied away from an opportunity to vocalize their opinions regarding the other’s work. Hurston and Wright grew up in diametrically different spheres and shared very little in common regarding early life experiences. As a child, Wright was raised without his father,...

She describes the event, its purpose, and how the event fifty years later, still has effect on society. During the article, she crosses the point that Dr. King knew it would not be easy to meet ends with social injustice and the economic hardships experienced by many, but did not foresee a black president celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of his speech. This brings me to Crystal Wright whom has received public attention for her article in regards to the March on Washington. Which I would personally...

Research on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean

...Research on Women in Latin America and the Caribbean Read the following articles in GGR: pp.151-230 These readings review the status of research in women's and gender studies in countries in Latin America and the Caribbean After I read the articles, I see women from Latin America and the Caribbean are facing similar issue with women from Asia and Africa. Sure that women’s right has come a long way and women role have change from only working in the houses or farms to working outside of the house support their families’ financial, but still they are suffer from gender inequality, poverty, and violence. Women are often treated as subordination to men in many ways like in economic or social life and when they want to work they are disadvantaged by childcare and housework responsibilities. To me, it seems like Latin America and the Caribbean special in Puerto Rico and Cuba have made more progress in women’s right than in Africa or Asia. Violence against women is still a serious problem in Latin America and the Caribbean. High rate of women have been a victim of sexual, physical, or psychological violence by partners just because they are women and seen as the weaker sex, even though there is law to protect women but usually get overlook especially in cases of domestic violence. I am also agree with Marta Nunez Sarmiento that there are more studies on women than men and in gender studies we should look on men perspective too. Cuban women have gained women equal in economic...
