Asset Management Business

Asset management involves the management of investments by third-party managers for their investors. Asset managers use various strategies that can be divided into these broad categories: traditional equity, fixed income fund strategies and alternative investment strategies (Blackstone Group LP, 2007). The more traditional asset managers manage and trade portfolios of equity, fixed income and or derivative securities. Assets may be invested in investment companies that are registered under the 1940 Act or through separate account managers on their behalf. The traditional fund manager is normally compensated with fees that are a percentage of assets under their management. Alternative asset managers have predefined risk parameters and investment guidelines and use a variety of strategies to achieve the required returns for their clients (Blackstone Group, 2007). This industry has experienced significant growth in worldwide assets under management in the past ten years, partially due to aging populations in both developed and emerging markets around the world that have increased the pools of savings and particularly pension assets. Blackstone has delivered superior returns with a lower correlation to the broader market than traditional asset management strategies. They have helped their clients diversify their investment portfolios by including alternative asset strategies (Blackstone LP, 2007).

Private Equity Fund Final Take Home Exam

...used in the process wrong? Answer 1-a Moral hazard nurtured by Real estate and MBS bubble; House prices of the United States had risen steadily since 1975. This trend accelerated in 1996, and reached about 12 percent per annum in late 2005 and early 2006. One reason for the rise in house prices is the Federal Reserve’s policy of maintaining low interest rates after the 2001 recession. Under these market situation, mortgage loan and mortgage backed securities market became more popular and bigger. The financial markets’ appetite for mortgage product also resulted in more creative and complex financial products and strategies such as MBS (Mortgage-backed securities), CDO (Collateralized debt obligation), ABCP (Asset-backed commercial paper), Conduits, SIV (Structured investment vehicles). For example, according to the case, the S&L crisis also boosted the securitization of mortgages by two government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs), Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Starting with bundles of mortgages purchased from mortgage originators, the GSEs created and sold mortgage-backed securities (MBSs), which delivered to holders the payments made on these mortgages. In exchange for a fee, the GSEs guaranteed the interest and principal on these loans. This meant that, assuming the GSEs remained solvent (or that the government came to their rescue if they found themselves in financial trouble), the only payment risk faced by the holders of these MBSs was the risk that the underlying mortgages...

Nec Electronic Case Study

...9-209-001 REV: NOVEMBER 3, 2010 C. FRITZ FOLEY ROBIN GREENWOOD JAMES QUINN NEC Electronics In early July 2007, Alp Ercil, Managing Partner and portfolio manager of Perry Capital’s (“Perry”) Asian portfolio, was considering options for how best to manage the $150 million position his firm had in NEC Electronics (NECE), the semiconductor subsidiary of Japanese electronics conglomerate NEC. In recent days, the NECE subsidiary had garnered Ercil’s full attention. On the heels of attending NECE’s annual meeting, he had learned that the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) was placing NECE on a watchlist for possible delisting due to its concentrated ownership structure. To Ercil, this was yet another sign that the investment was not going as planned - the stock was down considerably since Perry initiated the position in late 2005 (see Exhibit 1). Ercil took a moment to reflect on the recent history with NECE. When Perry Capital made the initial investment in 2005, Ercil had every expectation for success. Ercil’s team felt that NECE’s microcontroller unit (“MCU”) business,1 which supplied chips to major automobile manufacturers, operated at a world-class level with high growth potential and solid margins. NECE’s Computing, Consumer and Discrete businesses were generally competitive. However, the Communications business, which supplied semiconductors for mobile phones, appeared to be a constant drag on NECE’s cash flow and earnings. Specifically, Perry believed that NECE...

China

...The Transformation of China from an Emerging Economy to a Global Powerhouse James R. Barth, Gerard Caprio Jr., and Triphon Phumiwasana Abstract Throughout the past three decades of fast growth, China has undergone tremendous structural changes in its economy and financial system. This chapter examines China’s evolving financial landscape so as to assess whether it can catch up with or even drive economic growth. China has achieved remarkable growth over the past quarter of a century despite a relatively inefficient financial system. Just as the public sector around the world has not proved to be an efficient manager of enterprises, it also has not been an efficient manager of banks. A solution that would seem to work in theory would be to grow the private sector’s role in the banking system, using banks that operate on market principles as a way to continually starve inefficient enterprises of credit, while supplying credit to the productive enterprises. Finding a way to make this work in practice will require both finesse and good fortune on a scale commensurate with China’s growing importance in the world economy.
