Six years ago, my grandmother was cooking mutton stew, like she always had. However, unlike any other time, her eyelids suddenly shut on her. Blinded, she could only helplessly scamper around with a boiling pot in her hands. She was rushed to the hospital out of fear of what had happened to her eyes. Later, after a series of visits to several specialists, she was diagnosed with Blepharospasm. This spasm has few warning symptoms and its cause is still a subject of uncertainty. In response, my mother and I started attending the Benign Essential Blepharospasm Research Foundation's support groups here in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Being in these discussions has allowed for me to realize how big this little known problem actually is.
Blepharospasm affects men and women from a wide range of cultures and ages. In one lecture, Dr. Alfred deGuio stated that this neurological condition is associated with an uncontrollable muscle contraction that's a result of a complication in the basal ganglia (located in the brain; both sides of the thalamus). This sparked my interest in neurosciences. Later, my grandmother started a trial procedure in which she would wear a type of mouth-guard to open her eyes once again. This indicated the connections in the …show more content…
Though I have been lucky to travel the world to places such as Turkey, Pakistan, UAE, and Norway, I realized that our New Mexican culture is made up of abundant subcultures. When in the medical field, you need to interact with people from these subcultures. Getting to know them, their cultures, their religious beliefs, and where they're coming from can greatly enrich your relationship with them. Some of the ways that I have attempted to diversify my culture are through the classes I have taken such as the "Introduction to World Religions", visiting other countries, volunteering, and even by practicing my own religion while showing acceptance of

...Nephropathic Infantile Cystinosis Introduction Nephropathic cystinosis is an atypical genetic lysomal storage disorder distinguished by a destruction of the transfer of amino acid cystine from the lysosomes. Lysosomes are responsible for breaking down unwanted materials into cellular substances, and when cystine accumulates it crystallizes in the lysosomes of the cells and progresses to harm multiple tissues and organs of the body. The intent of this paper is to inform the importance of taking medication to reduce the surplus of cystine into the body’s system. Recognizing signs and symptoms and properly diagnosing is a key factor in treating this disorder. Individuals with infantile cystinosis experience both tubular dysfunction (renal Fanconi syndrome) and glomeralular deterioration. The renal Fanconi Syndrome usually occurs within the first year of life. Glomeralular deterioration progresses throughout the first decade of life, resulting in end-stage renal failure unless patients are treated with cysteamine (The importance of early diagnosis of nephropathic cystinosis to limit tissue and organ damage by treating it with specific medication, and if left untreated patient can develop renal failure by the age of 10. The prevalence of the infantile form of cystinosis transpires in 1 in 100,000 – 200,000 live births and in the North American population there is a carrier frequency of 1 in every 200. Europeans from the United Kingdom...

In man’s early days there were natural hazards such as earthquakes, weather, and other living organisms (microbes, animals, and fellow human beings). In modem times hazards are increasingly manmade fire, explosions, chemical spills, drugs, pollution, radioactive material, etc. Analysis of hazards has traditionally involved engineers and scientists who have produced fault trees, mean time between...

A leak of methyl isocyanate gas and other chemicals from the plant resulted in the exposure of hundreds of thousands of people. The toxic substance made its way in and around the shantytowns located near the plant.[2] Estimates vary on the death toll. The official immediate death toll was 2,259 and the government of Madhya Pradesh has confirmed a total of 3,787 deaths related to the gas release.[3] Others estimate 3,000 died within weeks and another 8,000 have since died from gas- related diseases.[4][5] A government affidavit in 2006 stated the leak caused 558,125 injuries including 38,478 temporary partial and approximately 3,900 severely and permanently disabling injuries.[6] UCIL was the Indian subsidiary of Union Carbide Corporation (UCC), with Indian Government controlled banks and the Indian public holding a 49.1 percent stake. In 1994, the Supreme Court of India allowed UCC to sell its 50.9 percent share. Union Carbide sold UCIL, the Bhopal plant operator, to Eveready Industries India Limited in 1994. The Bhopal plant was later sold to McLeod...
