I interviewed Bonnie, head of the Sanford Marden’s fabric department. She had been at Marden’s for fifteen years. She has worked in fabric for eleven, and was promoted to the fabric department supervisor nine years ago. When I asked her what she does everyday she said, “I come in everyday with a smile, play all day, and leave with a smile”. It was clear Bonnie enjoys her job. Bonnie said the most important part of her job is to keep the customers happy, to be knowledgable, and to keep the traffic flowing. Marden’s does a lot for the community, but one of their biggest contributions is Project Linus. Over ten years ago a representative from Project Linus from the local Sanford chapter spoke to Nancy in passing at a quilt store. They were just chit chatting, the women didn’t know who Nancy was, or what was about to happen because of the conversation. A lot of the programs Marden’s donates to and raises funds for are children. Marden’s wants our future to grow up with the best possible lives and is willing to help in anyway the company can. Next, I asked Bonnie how they raised awareness and if she had any advice. She said, “Scream about your cause until you’re blue in the face, then scream some more.” Bonnie and Nancy made it a challenge between the different Marden’s store to see which store could collect the most blankets. Bonnie told me, “When you make it a fun challenge people outside the cause will want to help. Look how quickly the ice bucket challenge went viral.” Finally, I asked Bonnie how she raises money for Project Linus. Bonnie told me that certain weeks during the year half of the sales that the fabric departments collect goes towards the project.
